I'm on episode 6, and I can't help but notice how this anime is a bit sexist in how it enforces traditional gender roles. Notice how 1- all the jazz band players are male; 2- Ritsuko, despite being the daughter of a music shop owner, has never played any instrument. In fact, we haven't seen a single musician woman in the series yet up to episode 6.

Both of these could have been coincidence, if it wasn't for number 3:

3- Sentaro, on episode 6, invites Ritsuko to the beach to "help me take care of the kids", but to Kaoru he makes a different request entirely: "let's have a shell-picking competition". Girls are for house chores, boys are for having fun with.

What do you think?

I know this anime is old now and barely anyone will read this, but it could generate a small discussion over the years nonetheless.

Edit: I learned towards the end that the anime was set in 1969, so that explains a lot!

The story clearly takes place in the 1960s. You might not like it but women emancipation was barely starting back then.

True. I wasn't aware of the time period when I wrote the post, but I noticed that myself later on. Thanks for the info nonetheless.
