This series has a lot of filler chapters that don't tie into the main plot; there are a couple of arcs that are simply detached from the main arc that can be left out. In fact, I feel some of the filler chapters, in particular between chapter 8 and 15[1] in fact lessen the dramatic impact of what transpired there; so I figured for an alternative reading order that leaves things out.
The way I see it, these arcs make up up the storyline:
- The Aki–Sora arc
- The Nami–Sora arc
- The parent backstory arc
- The Sora-Kana arc
- The Nami-Kana Arc
- The Runa arc
- The Miharu–Alice arc
The way I see it; the first five are intimately intertwined and build upon a single plot that intersects at the end, but the Runa - and Minara arc are almost completely disjoint from the others and can be discarded for a more compressed read of the actual dramatic development of the story. Furthermore, a large number of chapters in the Aki–Sora arc also do not tie into the main story and can freely be disregarded without loss of comprehension of the main story. To that end; this would be the "Aki-Sora distilled" chapters which only keep the chapters necessary to comprehend the main story.
main story [19–21 chapter]:
01, 02, 03, 04[3] 05, 07, 08, 09[2], 15, 16, 17, 19[2], 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27[3], 28, 29, 30
Aki–Sora arc supplementary [3–5 chapters]:
The parts of the Aki–Sora arc that are not required to comprehend the main story and can be treated as detached filler
09[2], 10, 13, 14, 19[2]
Runa arc [6 chapters]:
04[3], 06, 11, 20, 23, 27[3]
Miharu–Alice arc [2 chapters]:
12, 18
It is my belief that by discarding the side-story filler, the dramatic impact of the story is actually improved, especially with respect to the in between chapter 09 and 15.
1. Yes, it actually took from chapter 08 to 15 for that very dramatic event to have a follow-up, to me all the filler in-between severely lessened the dramatic impact of the conclusion and made it hard to believe.
2. These chapters are arguably part of the main story as they do reference some of the events therein, but not enough to require reading to comprehend the main story.
3. Chapter 27 is the one problematic part; this is the only place where the Runa arc intersects with the main story; Runa's character can be comprehended by simply reading chapter 04 alone and it still makes sense discarding all Runa chapters that happened thereafter; one can also simply read the entire Runa arc to get a better conception of the character.
