----------------------------------------
This volume was the first one to feature a story with several timelines. It delves into the history of the robot Robita who made an appearance in "Future", and it was really unexpected. I can clearly see how Tezuka is trying to explore the whole theme of robots and their feelings, and it resonates with one of the themes of "Future" too, which was about aliens called moopies and their relationships with humans. This really seems like an issue bothering Tezuka, I bet Astro Boy also had similar thematic presence through and through.
Interestingly enough, the role of the Phoenix itself was very insignificant in this volume, obviously due to the fact that humans mastered resurrection, organ transplantation and so forth. The bird still helped Leon reach an important conclusion about immortality and rebirth - they're not as cool as they sound.
Overall this was another great volume, I honestly haven't found a single bad one in "Phoenix" so far. Although I'd say that "Karma" was the absolute best.

Phoenix volume 5 thoughts

My jaw dropped when I realized the connection to Future at the end of it, amazing. This was a very nice thematic continuation of Karma, where we see humans becoming the ones in charge of resurrection and not relying on the natural order that was established there. I loved the dilemma- "My body is human, but my mind is robot". Enjoyed the volume as a whole a lot, again the panelling reminded me of the other two volumes so far that were set in the future.
