Interesting stuff! We got to see the way Gai met Ikeda. In a moment Ikeda picked up on the opportunity and decided to let the kid continue to live there. Yet again, adult and kid in allegiance just like Abe and Gai were, both for their own interests and no fakeness. Letting a kid live there must show a lack of care for him but at the same time this is all Gai wanted and I wonder if he even believes in a Kaiji-esque “true” sense of kindness. These two are fun already as little as we saw. Gai treating the place well and not even wearing shoes inside despite its situation and Ikeda stubbornly helping him patch up a broken window.

After that we got to see the way Gai wants to live and how he does with self-dependance. He made me realize he might not need to see Shin Kurosawa’s “master Shonen” after all. The way he said he may not have travel or luxury but an infinity within his reach sounded like some wisdom that man would have stated. An inverse of what defines Kaiji or Kurosawa, both wanting what they can’t have badly. Sure, Gai wanted more but he didn’t let that ruin him and he planned to change his way of life through his own work. “If I hate this life I should build power. And if I can’t do that I deserve this ill fate”. He is one headstrong lone wolf.

All of this is good and well, I actually found him happily watching fireworks from the window beautiful. Reading a book in the dark with a single lantern and smiling. Sleeping with a sleeping bag and a pillow. Reaching the thing he wanted, freedom and being happy. A freedom that is not one of doing anything but being independant and content I suppose. However, I do have one point of criticism. He sees living self dependently as being what reality is, “you have to rely only on yourself” as the ultimate commandment for living beings. In that view he looks down on others calling them “nothings” or rotten and dumb just as the director would. In fact he sees this, in my understanding, as the only way of properly living which everyone should aspire to. He has integrity and goes far above what one would expect to preserve this self-dependance. But he’s missing out on what I think is core to humans. He said the ultimate commandment is to rely only on yourself, but what’s wrong with mutually relying on each other? I think Strongest Man Kurosawa is a big proponent for empathy and coming together with others, relying on them, growing with each other and I don’t think it has to be all or nothing. Humans are social animals. Relying on other people is okay, it can be beneficial for both parties in my opinion and I don’t think Gai understands that. In a way Ikeda relies on Gai to live there for income and Gai relies on Ikeda for the ability to survive there, I don’t mean to take his words too literally, but can anyone survive purely self dependently? I suppose some survivalists but that goes into a territory of freedom actually akin to “a feral wolf child” and I don’t think many people would want that.

Anyways, the next question is how does Gai go from this to being a framed murderer?
