It is said in episode 8 or 9 when Dororo was sick that she is a girl. The lady refers to her as a young girl.

You know what's weird?

the fact that when anime is doing a trap seems so normal and doesn't seem to affect the plot much other than ppl be shipping the characters. but when cartoons are doing it, it just makes our minds immediately just say NO that's not right!

is that just me?

In Epsiode 9 the Nun clearly said she was a girl

I love the fact that I completely dismissed that fact and only thought it was because Dororo had a high-pitched voice...then I watched Ep. 16, and everything came full circle and I was just like-

"Well aren't you stupid"

In the 2019 version of the anime ;episode 9 it’s revealed in feverish state while dororo is being taken care of by the nun that the nun remarks that the journey with hyakkumaru must be hard with a young girl to hyakkumaru.

Implying that dororo is actually at girl, later in Episode 9 dororo says in passing that nun told her she had a 3 day fever to hyakkumaru, as dororo talks about how the nun took very good care of her by washing her clothes, then realizes that she must’ve been naked if the nun took her clothes to be washed.

Dororo realizes that hyakkumaru might now know that she’s a girl.
Hyakkumaru gives no confirmation to dororo to her concerns that he knows she’s a girl and that allows her to continue traveling with him.

But it’s heavily implied that hyakkumaru knows that dororo is a girl.

Dororo is a girl but pretends to be a boy because it was easier to survive as a male kid than female in the medieval japan and she knows it. I am not saying the word but "that" happened to a lot of young girls in medieval japan or any other country tbh. World is shit ikr.

It's funny to me because I immediately thought Dororo was a girl but then all the characters kept calling her 'he'. I went with it because that's what the anime was saying, but I was entirely dubious and actually expected a 'revelation' that she was secretly a girl all along... so the Nun episode was more of an "I knew it!" moment than a genuine surprise :3

It was the eyelashes, general design and the very feminine poses Dororo has in the first opening that made me fairly convinced she was female right from the get go.

Dororo was born a girl. We know this because it says in the manga but also in the anime, when she’s sick. I’m not sure what episode it is but there’s a lady that calls her a girl. She refuses to dress girly or acknowledge her gender though.

"did you just assume ___ gender?" memes are garbage, get out of here with your neckbeard humor.

Anyways, to answer the question, Dororo is a girl who was raised to believe she's a boy.

dororo is a girl

Source: episode 9
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

Dororo canonically uses he/him pronouns and insists on being called a boy. Disrespecting his pronouns just because he's young is transphobic and embarrassing (@all of the other replies).

Dororo refers to himself as a boy multiple times in the manga, why're you spreading false information?

Did we even watch the same show? Biologically Dororo is a girl. It’s simple. Also, you can’t enforce gender politics on an anime taking supposedly place in Feudal Japan. The fact the Dororo calls herself a boy does not negate she is biologically female.

More important question, why do you care about what I said two years ago? Seriously, if you look at the episode I was referring to, it’s even stated. Please grow up and find someone else to target with shallow gender politics. Yes, Dororo uses he/him because Dororo grew up as a boy even if she is a woman. She knows it herself but she identifies as male, because if you think about it historically, life would have been way easier that way during those times. Also at the very end of the anime, you can see her embracing her feminine identity. So, just saying Dororo is a boy completely negates her character. Even in the manga it is said Dororo is female.

HOOOOLY hell what is this dumpster fire I stumbled upon.

The writers don't have to explain Dororo's gender in a binary ,clear statement. Especially since Dororo is a 10 YEAR OLD CHILD. If someone wants to be referred to as a certain gender then that's it. Plain and simple. The reason doesn't matter, their biology doesn't matter. You have no right to disregard their identity or preference. Even if they later on decide on a different preference, it doesn't invalidate the time in which they identified differently. It's not your call to decide such a personal thing for someone else.

Gender fluidity and ambiguity existed for AGES in many cultures, it's just that now we recognize it on a wider scale and are generally more open to the idea. So those of you who are using the argument of "don't use modern day views on gender" are either ignorant or criminally stupid. It's funny that you try to use the null argument of "it's feudal Japan" when they had an actual 3rd gender (which is a can of worms we aren't gonna get into but it very well existed).

Don't throw the "gender policing" argument on me, you're just using it as an excuse to erase the debate altogether. And YOU'RE the one who's trying to assign a gender to someone in the first place. Oh the irony.
Some of y'all are transphobes and it's showing.

Dororo is a girl and always was a girl.
She was crossdressing as a boy to avoid being abducted into slavery and forced into prostitution.
There is absolutely nothing LGBT related here.

@Piromysl

Pretty much this.

It was obvious that parents protected her to avoid her being raped by the TOP quality people they were running with (you know, killers and rapists).

Her parent's have the most moronic backstory as well, and most pointless deaths.
