MaskOfIce said:I think it's biggest problem isn't just lack of a story, but rather that it lacks a story while feeling like it's trying to set one up. It ends up feeling a bit unfocused, although the individual plot stories are consistently pretty fun. Also, it's not exactly doing itself any favors inviting the comparison to Tiger & Bunny, since that's not a comparison that works favorably for it. The only thing I think it arguably does better than Tiger & Bunny is Kirill has yet to be as annoying as Kotetsu at his lowest moments, but even then he also never reaches the same highs either.
Well said! I mean, either it should commit itself to being a comedy with some serious moments or it should be a serious story with humorous elements to lighten things up. But D&K is neither. It pretends to be serious...only to laugh in your face (literally, through the narrator!) and take an abrupt turn into nonsense-land. Then it struggles to be funny...only to undermine itself by bringing up a serious issue that has no place in a buddy cop show.
To make matters worse, Doug is unbelievably stoic and Kirill is unbelievably ditzy, so their characters have no charm at all and their partnership is dull as ditchwater. Seriously, the only duo in this I think work well are Yuri and Max, and they're not so much "work partners" as "life partners who also happen to work together." All the work partner duos have zero chemistry (and I'm not talking about shipping, here).
I originally had no desire to compare this to T&B, but since it comes up so often, I will: While T&B had a silly, simplistic, superhero-comic-esque plot, its characters and their interactions were strong, regardless of whether they were likeable or not. So it kind of made up for the shaky story development. On the other hand D&K has a paper-thin, unfocused plot and even thinner, more underdeveloped characters, so it has nothing to compensate for its flaws.
Also, on a completely unrelated note: I'm happy to see there's someone out there who acknowledges how annoying Koutetsu was capable of being when he was acting like a brat. (All the T&B fans seem to consider him as the one who can do no wrong, after all) That being said, he's still miles better than Kirill, and despite being nowhere near as "cool and collected" as Doug, I'd take Barnaby over him any day. And I thought Karina was insufferable but Deana... *shudder* It's hilarious how D&K made me adore the T&B cast in retrospect, so at least that's one good thing I got out of slogging through these 10 episodes ^_^
Tl;dr: For once I agree with MAL's rating for a series. For potential future viewers: I don't really recommend this, but give it a go if art/animation alone can keep you happy and you like watching pretty boys and girls in action or something. As for myself, I'll keep watching until the end now that I've come so far, but there's no way in hell I'll ever be re-watching it or rating it higher than a 5/10. |
