THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER.
----------------------------------------
I already posted this on three separate forums here on MAL, but just in case, this is the link to the fan translation of the novel: https://yoraikun.wordpress.com/category/okitegami-kyouko/

Okay, so we can finally explore another series by NisiOisiN. This apparently takes place in the same universe as Monogatari and Zaregoto (there could be more but I don't know much about Nisio's cinematic universe), and damn does it hold up. There doesn't seem to be any supernatural elements, but I hope to god there is, for reasons I'll touch upon shortly.

This first chapter follows Kakushidate Yakusuke, working part-time for a research institute that studies how to make 3D technology more efficient (or something like that). If one goes by pronunciation "Kakushidate" means "someone who's concealing a bad past", and the kanji for "Yakusuke" is literally just "trouble" given a different pronunciation. Yakusuke does indeed have a bad past, because of his shy nature for someone of his height, he has continuously been suspected of crimes he hasn't committed. When the head of the lab, Emii, realizes an SD card being used as a back-up for their research is missing, he detains everyone in the lab so no one can leave until they find it. The members, Honda, Yurine, and Gifube begin to suspect Yakusuke, so he decides to call in the fastest detective, Okitegame Kyoko.

More trivia! "Okitegami" literally means "a letter left behind" implied to mean "a letter from the deceased". I am going from the translator's notes, so I don't exactly know what they mean by Kyouko's name being 'spelled differently', but apparently her Detective Agency's name translates to the "Deceased Detective Agency".

Anyways, so Kyouko is called in and Yakusuke reveals that she is a famous detective that solves cases in a day, thus the "fastest detective", but she is also the most "forgetful detective". Kyouko has some kind of amnesia illness that has her memories reset as soon as she falls asleep, so she literally only has a day to solve her cases. Naturally, because of this, she forgets every case she's worked on, along with every client, including Yakusuke. Apparently, he has called her in for numerous cases over the last two years, and each time he has to reintroduce himself to her, just like this time.
He seems to have a bit of a crush on her, though nothing explicit, his constant remarks on how it hurts to call her in because she doesn't remember him are evidence enough.

Okay, not going to get too deep into spoilers, but this is a mystery and as always, NisiOisiN delivers. I mildly expected the culprit to be who it was, but the twists threw me for a loop numerous times. That said, the only reason why I was able to kind of get an idea of who the culprit was because I am NisiOisiN fanatic, and I understand his thought processes to a good extent, thanks to my experiences with his work.

I do like how the case was commenting on the story, the missing SD card being symbolic for Kyouko's memory to some extent, but I would need to reread to fully analyze how that idea is portrayed. Speaking of Kyouko's memory, I hope what is causing this amnesia of hers is actually some kind of abberation from Monogatari, like a weight/ memory crab or something of that nature BECAUSE THIS WAS FREAKING SAD. I know asking for this is kind of like asking for a cop out, but I can't freaking help it, because I felt so bad for Yakusuke and Kyouko and how there is nothing we can do to further any romantic relationship or friendship. At least if its a memory crab or something of that ilk, it can be reversed...

Okay, I am writing too much but I highly enjoyed reading this first chapter, and I will continue reading this and posting forums on this in the future. Highly recommended! 4.5/5
This already has live-action adaptation, and from what I heard, it is really good. Hopefully in the future, Shaft goes ahead and adapts this into an anime maybe after they are done with Monogatari, whenever that will be, but perhaps I am betting too high on that possibility.
