If we consider the very last page of the "Special" ch44. It is pretty clear that they died at the end.
The author talked about the girls in past tense:
"
"Hovewer, no matter the time, Chito and Yuuri belived that the joy of being alive never disappears."

I really liked the ending though, it was a great post apocalyptic manga. Also liked the message that the author tried to make at the end.
Probably the only thing that I dont like is how the anime ended, with even one extra episode (or 2) they could have adapt the whole thing.

I love this Anime and this Manga. For me it is one of the best I found till now,
I started with the Anime and after the last episode I already got this slight idea that it could be a sad end.
But the open end of the anime luckily left everything open.

Then after I noticed that the Mange end with 6th Volume I was able to order the limited Edition from Japan with 2 Keychains of Chito and Yuuri.
I never opened the 6. Book because I didn't want to know the End.

Unfortunately I decided yesterday to read it finally.
In that Moment their Kettenkrad broke I knew that is the countdown of their End.

I read a lot of Discussions and Theories.
In one YouTube Video where the End was analysed I found a bit of Peace because it let me see the End as a beautiful and peaceful although very dramatic, melancholy Ending.

So with this in Mind I started the last Chapter again to read.
And there I got a terrible apprehension that I cannot get it out of my head.

I didn't read anything about such a theory so if you are in good harmony with the ending better do not read any further.
---
I don’t know why I didn't noticed this earlier because I read the last pages serval times.
There was this parts of Dialogue that frighten me in this Context I see them:
So what do we have left? - There is also a Knife, Lights, Rope and Wire and a Bomb. and then Chito ask Do we have a way to Ignite the Bomb? and later So is this really the end? - What should we Do after this? and the last Dialogue from Yuu ...Then let’s Consider Afterwards

So Chito is thinking of suicide with the Bomb. Obvious because both would die simultaneously and quickly.
OK the Lamp is out of fuel we know from earlier so maybe there is no way to detonate the Bomb.
But there is also the Knife. And in Japanese Culture Suicide with a knife - it would not be inconceivable in this Situation.

So why did Tsukumizu show us these 3 Pages before End?
I hardly could accept the both died together Hand in Hand in a peaceful sleep.
But the possibility of Suicide …

My only “Exit” is that all that happened after they went to sleep after watching all the Pictures and Videos in the Submarine, is a bad dream.
If I find it so hard to accept the fictional death, how will it be who I'm confused with the "real" death?

I sobbed my eyes out reading this, but I'm just going to pretend that they made it back to a lower level and got a house with a bunk bed. It's all I can do to keep my heart from breaking.

Not a huge fan of how the author decided to close the story, but at least I can headcanon a happy ending for them, so that's something. Still a wonderful manga though!

While there is a question about what they lighted symbols on the rock represent, it seems pretty clear that the girls shortly died after this ending. They don't have food or fuel to keep going, they can't cross the distances they did before without a vehicle, and they already destroyed key parts of the path up so they would need to find a new way down. They sacrificed everything to achieve their goal of getting to the top.

This ending increased my opinion of this manga because it finally allowed the girls to face the consequences of their actions. Their vehicle should have broken down long before, but it was only allowed to do so for the sake of the story.

What makes this ending feel so tragic to me is that there were other options. The biggest shame is that they killed the AI. It most likely had many means of helping them, especially if it had the ability to machine parts or help produce food. They could have lived their for a time to ensure they had the ability to get back from the top. Their presence may also have helped the AI.

At an symbolic level, this manga was a great presentation of a nihilistic world view. The world lacked meaning, and the only meaning the could find in the end was an extremely weak reason of that they at least had fun. It allowed Chito to laugh for a moment, but I don't think it will last much longer than that.

Seems like these posts need to be reorganised (especially this one with people talking about the ending 5 chapters too early for people reading it from now on) as it seems new chapters have been added along the way.
I nearly spoiled myself by reading the post for Chapter 40 in the Tankōbon/Yen Press English release which was Chapter 35 on the forum!

Man... so all along they were going towards nothing. I initially thought the author just wanted to end this and move on but it does make sense. Between the last of the tower AI finally dying and those mushroom alien things moving on, it seems this was the only way to end.

I'm sad that Chii couldn't leave her journal, but given that humans are either all dead or soon to die, no one will be left to read it anyway. Still, would have been symbolic if they had chosen to leave it behind instead of burning it.

Really liked this manga overall.

This is likely the most depressing story I have ever read. In hindsight Im glad the anime ended were it ended. The manga turned from this weirdly wholesome sol show into a really dark one super fast.

I always expected the top to be simply empty and the ending to be open, Im just glad they ended together and not apart. They got so close towards the end I was really getting ready for a suckerpunch, killing one of them and leaving the other behind. Especially during the staircase chapter, Im glad that didnt happen.

The very image where I felt like this turned away from all the warmth it had before and became pure depression was Chiis dirty face after taking the engine apart. I suddenly thought I was reading one of those depressing doujins.
It was pure despair.
And it turned out right.

Seeing them suddenly lose everything one after another, step for step really hurt. All this time this show wasnt really serious, they always had food, water and fuel. And suddenly there was nothing and they were actually running out.
Seeing all their struggle be meaningless in the end just hurts too much.

This actually felt a bit too sudden, as if the author just decided to end the story early, but I think it overall became better and better still.

Im really at a loss for words right now.

edit - now that I had a day to think about it because it just didnt let me go, It feels like I lost some friends with Yuu and Chiito. Not in the way post-anime-depression hits you because it was a great time and now its over, but because these 2 really grew on me and it really feels like they are gone. Kudos to the author for managing that.
I originally watched the anime because despite its setting its rather calm and soothing. So Im glad the anime ended were it ended, still with a goal in mind and thus hope. You could always hope there is just something, anything at all to keep going around discovering the world and finding joy in these lifeless ruins. But the last chapters really nailed the hopelessness of their situation, especially after their Kettenkrad broke down.
They kept going, struggling along the way, pushing forward. Only to reach a dead end.

I used to watch the anime before going to sleep which really helped, not the manga ending keeps me up at night.

PS: this chapter section is really out of place, it ends with 42, not 48 or whatever

The last few chapters were depressing af. Even in this chapter it had sad vibes when they were playing with snow as if they had nothing left under the starry night. Not a fan of open ending, a firm conclusion would have been better even if it was a depressing one.

A very good ending and a little disappointing my favorite manga ended late seeing some people commenting that Chito and Yuri will die in the near future because yes as described in the manga their vehicle is damaged the food stock is running out but I think Chito and Yuri will stay alive and continue the adventure aimlessly there is a reason they are still alive there are interesting details after Chito and Yuri slept in the highest place they went back downstairs and met Nuko in the additional manga chapter they met Nuko with blue paper I don't know what it was when in the connection chapter Nuko could change his body shape when Chito and Yuri can't open the door of the submarine Nuko can open it this can be used as an excuse for Nuko to repair Chito's vehicle and before going to the highest place there is a rocket station base there must be food stock in the rocket debris because the rocket astronaut must have brought food supplies to go to space and this is a a very logical reason and every time there is a problem Chito and Yuri must always be lucky like the previous manga chapter Chito and Yuri can't cross to the next town and meet Kanazawa and Chito and Yuri's vehicle is damaged and meet oshi after their chapter the connection they find a can of sardines stuck in blizzard they find shelter

Anyway beautiful manga beautiful ending 10/10

Basically this, I'm actually impressed with how many people here are fixated on how they died instead of how they lived. The most shocking comment has to be the one by Phaetons_Folly calling it an extremely weak reason, do people realize how ten thousands of people wish they could at least say that about their lives? There are so many people right now that only live for the sake of living, each passing day doing stuff like an automaton hoping that maybe one day they can be happy.
You also have lonely people, sick people, wartorn people, discriminated people... If anything I would say that Yuuri and Chito's were extremely blessed if they could at least say they had fun living their lives. Honestly after all these years I still think that the whole point of the manga was the journey and not the ending.
