I'm currently on the second Restart book!!
They are making them into english prints <3
I have the first and second physical copy.
I'm waiting for the rest to continue since i hate reading online.
But it's so amazing how many there are and how deep this series is.
It deserves so much more praise and recognition.
There are over 60 magical girls and the 12 episode anime based off the first book just doesn't do this series justice at all.
I hope we get a season two! The second book has some of the most popular characters in the series, so i'm really hoping it does!!
How far are you in this series?

I'm currently on Breakdown

Best mahou shoujo series out there

The most explained unique magics and different types of biology of the Magical girl's forms which distinguished each of the characters personalities out of any other mahou shoujo series they even have official stats. With this level of depth in comparable to HxH's Nen and characters, this is arguably the best mahou shoujo series out there

10/10 truly a masterpiece

I read them as well, but I'm strugling to get my hand on queens, because it's sold out everywhere i usually buy. I have to wait for them to restock, and for something that isn't selling a lot, this means a long wait.

so what? If you want to read it with physical copies and cannot read japanese, that's where you should be right now.

Aaah, I didn't think about that. Yeah it's from Jokers, so way past that indeed. Well, with the wikia, anyone can see all the names and appearance and pick a name or appearance he/she likes; but now I see why this surprised you.

I first read them online then bought the first two that have already been released. I liked the anime but the novels are even better because they're revealing a really grand picture of the whole Land of Magic. There were many interesting characters which I found myself cheering for and feeling really sad when they were gone... My greatest regret was that there were so many deaths, and at least some of them could easily be saved. Nevertheless, I'm happy I found this title. It turned out to be one of the more interesting animes and novels I've watched and read recently.

I just finished the anime and want to know if you guys advise me to continue the story in the novel? Because episode 12 seemed as if it concluded the story, and I thought maybe they did an original ending.

If the ending isn't original, then from what volume should I start reading?

From volume 2. (or even better, from the extra chapter at the end of a reedition of volume 1. chapter is called "Snow white's raising project").
Anime only adapted the first volume and some of the side stories in volume 4 concerning those characters, and that's it.
In other words, you've only seen the prologue of the whole story right now.

I just got here in the comments section, i've already finished every arc except for Breakdown. There's a new extra chapter after Queens and a new Main Arc this coming Fall 2019. I just wished for Lerche to give this series another chance and make a season 2.

Why is the anime score and reviews so low compare to the novel?

I'm planning to watch this anime but can't read a good review about why. Whats are your guys opinion on what should I do? Should I watch the anime or skip it and try reading the novel instead?

P.S. I hope you guys replies.

Hi, it's good to watch the anime because there are some things that are presented better there than in the novel. The last chapters of the first volume feel really rushed. Also, the anime helps to feel more connected with the characters, plus, it has a very good soundtrack and animation. I recommend highly to watch the anime first, and then to read the novels :)

@Gazz several reasons. The anime only adapted vol 1, which is basically the prologue. So since it's the prologue, there's barely any character development(you don't develop the main characters in a prologue, and obviously, you don't develop side characters that DIE in the prologue either), no explanation of what is behind, and you could even say that the real meat of the story has yet to start, since the real story is about the consequences of what happened in vol 1 and how the various characters will handle/go through/etc that.
In fact, the explanations about what was going on in vol 1 start with the next (as in, right after the end of the anime) chapter of the story, called "snow white raising project", which introduce a major antagonist as well as really start character development for the MC. So what peoples wanted? it literally starts right after the anime ends.
And then introduce what you could call the second half of the real protagonists with the next arc.
Also the anime version reintroduced side stories from vol 4 (which is a side story volume)about characters from vol 1. That was a nice idea, except that they put each of those stories that develop those vol 1 characters right before they die, so deaths that should have taken peoples by surprise (which is something that MSIK is very, VERY good at in the novel, so total opposite of the anime) didn't surprise anyone instead.

I didn't felt like it was a bad adaptation overall, just that... They adapted too little for peoples to understand where the story was going so it didn't hook them at all.

I think you put a spoiler tag on your reply, but thank you for the detailed explanation.

Only the prolouge? Thats like the equivalent of Cloud meeting Aerith in the church then boom, the end (Final Fantasy 7 reference).

Sorry but another question, should I just skip this anime and proceeds to read the light novel? My problem is, high quality eng sub anime is easy to find, but a light novel with quality eng translation is sometimes hard. I remember bout 10years ago something when I read the SAO gungale light novel. The eng translation is so bad, it sounded like mine. But the Haruhi Suzumiya I read was different, it was beautifully translated.

Though I'm confidence with my googling skills that I can find a good eng translation.

Thats the problem of a lot of novel having their anime adaptation; plot is moving fast. To Aru Majutsu Index season 3 is my best example of even a good anime can be very bad if the director or screenwriter of the said anime doesnt know what he is doing lol.

thank you guys for your replies. Good thing you guys are still on MAL because lot of veterans here quit after the 4 months MAL server problem in 2017.

Hmm, I would have if I wrote any real spoilers, but I'm mostly giving the direction that it takes rather than spoilers?
The best you can do is read to vol 4+ and then watch the anime. Anime can be enjoyed plenty if you've already read the novels ImO; so if you like the story in novels, sure, pick up the anime after a while (why vol 4, because anime also adapts short stories from that volume).
The reverse (starting with the anime) is nowhere as good.

BTW if you pick up yen press ' official english translation for those novels, just be aware that their version doesn't have an important extra chapter at the end of vol 1 (the japanese version has two version of the volume 1, one with and one without that chapter, and the english novels have licensed the one without it), so after finishing vol 1 (or after finishing the anime if you decide to start with that after all), don't forget to read it online before going to vol 2, it's a really important chapter in the long run.

As for quality translation, I can't tell, I read the japanese version. But those novels, like I mentioned above, exist with professional translation if you pick up the official english version of it, so you're not going to face google translation level stuff if you go with that (except maybe for the extra chapter I mentioned).

thanks for this tip. Since its only a extra chapter, I bet its not long, so maybe google translate will do the trick as long as each sentence is readable.

Thanks a lot for your help. Appreciated it.

@Gazz I'd say read volume 1 first then watch the anime then continue from volume 1.5

Also PM me for the arc order

I recommend Platfleece's translations

Lastly to answer your question, simply because the anime only adapted arc 1 of it's 7 arcs and counting so basically the anime onlies are judging not even ⅛th of the whole story

The light novels are prepared. Fortunately I havent read them yet because theres too many good ongoing anime (anime plus my work, 24 hours is not enough)

What is your opinion on the anime? Why is the anime ranked too low while the novel ranked high?

@Gazz the anime is great, I already answered your question tho but to put more perspective other factors are, 1. people don't like reading, 2.they don't have access to the source material (even I had trouble finding where to read unless you encounter the fanbase and helped you) 3. Like I already said, some people judge arc 1 as it's whole story even tho it's basically just the prologue 4. Not everyone is into mahou shoujo at least majority of anime fans aren't 5. A certain cancerous fanbase just loves to hate on dark themed mahou shoujos 6. It's MAL, scoring is subjective and always will be

My advice is don't trust MAL scoring system

As for why the LN is ranked high well they've read the greatness so they know wasup and again like the anime, I wouldn't say it's ranked high, barely even 600 people scored it, again it's coz MAL scoring system is flawed even tho the LN's ranked is well deserved and honestly should've been way higher like I'd put it within top 10 but again I wouldn't trust MAL rankings

Ofcourse but its a good benchmark on what to watch anime, especially for me who have work. Infact, I have too many plan to watch anime I can't watch.

Arifureta suffered the same fate though. I mean, the novel scored 8.00 while the anime adaptation is at 6.53.
