Do you think the Kizumonogatari film trilogy should be merged into one entry?

The three Kizumonogatari films adapt one novel, and one arc (Koyomi Vamp) from the Monogatari light novel series. They form one story, therefore it is completely pointless to watch just or the other - one has to watch all three to get not only the full experience, but a narrative that actually makes sense.

None of them are constructed as stand alone stories at the fundamental level. They are literally just one three-hour movie split into three parts. That's why I don't believe there's any point in having three separate entries for them. Giving scores to them separately also feels pointless, because it's like giving the three acts of any movie separate scores.

Ask yourself: if you ever decide to watch them again, will you only watch part 2? Or just part 1 or part 3? Would you ever watch just one of the three parts of 5 Centimeters Per Second?

I don't know. Maybe it's MAL's database philosophy that's too rigid right now to be able to handle concepts such as this one: a movie series that's a movie series in name only, as in spirit it's just three acts of one long movie released over the course of a year. Maybe it can't be helped.

Well, that's what I think. This post is an invitation to anyone interested to discuss this matter. I'd be most interested in answers that are more elaborate than a simple yes or no; if that's all you want to add, just use the poll.

While I like the proposal, I think its fine the way it is, because if MAL would ever cave on this issue, that also means that every film series also needs to be combined into one, like Kara no Kyoukai for example, but I am sure that certain specials or OVAs would also need to be combined with that logic, because can a special, or OVA's story be understood on a fundamental level without the main series? It's that kind of domino effect this will create, and I am already mad enough at MAL for listing Violet Evergarden as airing even though it doesn't officially premiere until January. I really don't think its a good idea to poke this issue, a movie is a movie in MAL's (metaphorical) eyes, and when the movie releases, that's when it is listed and what it is listed as. I DO think you have a point, I would like this sort of treatment for certain series, but I also think the making of the argument is pointless in the grand scheme of things.

I totally agree on your point about the domino effect. I can only reiterate what I've already said, that the Kizu film "episodes" aren't structured as , and this wouldn't apply to most film series, where even if they leave the main plot to be continued, they still have a beginning, a middle and an end. Think of the original Star Wars trilogy, for example. Or the Harry Potter books - only the seventh book was adapted in two parts, every other volume was adapted in just one movie, respectively, even though they are all much longer than the Kizumonogatari novel. So my main point is purely about structure. I'll admit this is kind of impossible to determine purely objectively, and it could only be decided by community voting or an executive decision from the staff - not that I expect this "case" to ever get to that point.

While I think Kizumonogatari is quite lovely, and deserves a lot of praise, I also find the fact that the advantage it's given in scores due to having been split into 3 parts is unfair. Other movies don't get to have one entry for each of their three acts. I also think that Aniplex is a shameless greedy corporation, and they took full advantage of the opportunity to charge people for one movie three times at the theaters, and of course sell the same movie on BR thrice as well - but I digress.

I don't get what the harm is in discussing this; it's not like I have any influence with the MAL staff. I may not have a compelling case, but I don't think I'm in the wrong for criticizing the database policies. Anyways, I'm glad you replied and I thank you for your input.
