“Human beings are seeds that are sprouting, destined to break the world with their growth! So stand alone!” is a line I’m sure will be good to remember.

As for the contents of this chapter, I found it quite interesting that it was mostly depicted through the world's perspective contrary to Gai’s. Gai’s came out sometimes, but it starts with the police warning the public as Gai runs through the streets. We see the news helicopter depicting what is going on from above and planning to capture everything. We have the detective and the police stepping into the alley and see his side of things and his thoughts. Only later seeing Gai’s scar. Like everyone in this chapter I feel we were an outsider looking in on the mysterious Gai.

Two initial defining characteristics I saw in Gai were that he is 1. Gutsy, and 2. Courageous. He will stare down a group of cops cornering him into an alley. And he’s smart enough to instantly deduce why an iron rod is being used and to strike it with a rock. A good combo to go together as the logic warrants his guts. And with his only composure breaks being some small sweats I say he’s definitely more in the Akagi camp of Fukumoto characters to my knowledge, he’s not quite a Kurosawa or a Kaiji. Yet his logic makes me question him. Perhaps running into this dead end was the only path he had. But beyond that, why run from the police and even beat them if the story is as simple as “when I went into the room he was dead”. Gai is logical enough to understand if the evidence wouldn’t get him in trouble and also deduce that he would get in trouble by running and fighting, no? Gai did give some odd reasoning in the end, “I didn’t kill him so there’s no reason to give up”. I don’t understand that, I mean I do in a simple sense, someone accuses you of something you didn’t do so you don’t stand by it, but wouldn’t they just bring him in for questioning? There has to be a first caller when there’s someone dead. So, I think the obvious conclusion is that he was set up and he knows it. But if so, why? What is his connection to Hirata Rouhou and who is he, is he yakuza? I also wonder where his scar came from and where he learned to fight. The detective said his talent was 1 in 100, but I do think it’s more than that, he seemed practiced in fighting like a pro.

Gai also said that the detective was a coward for using trickery and a weapon like that rod. That to me reads as a code of honor and that he looks down on the detective for breaking it. I can read it in a Kurosawa sense of “living” where one has to push themselves to feel alive and be fulfilled. By cheating with the rod you may cheat like a certain Kaiji villain and never get genuine experience. But, in that case one should pity the other in my opinion, not necessarily be so harsh on them. Even in that sense, the detective doesn’t care to fight for this, it more so makes me think of Nakane in Kurosawa and fighting for the sake of living. Gai is certainly interesting and I found his use of intimidation by faking the eye poke awesome and I love the concept of waiting for someone to freeze up and flying in for a strike like he did. In a way, as the detective tried to scare him off by telling him what would happen if he doesn’t give in, Gai did the same thing.
