they were never apart for that long maybe it just seemed longer because it was anime, like in fighting scenes in shonen when a character fits in an entire monologue in the length it takes him to do a sword swing, which is obviously impossible.

There was a reason that he lost her in that big crowd, it is part of his character... it seems you don't understand... he was thinking very hard and getting lost in his thought, it was supposed to seem jarring that he knows she will die but lost her, it was his personality quirk that caused it.

Characters are fighting to achieve their dreams. for example, the idol girl, she is fighting for her dream to become the top idol and be adored and loved by everyone, if someone loses this fight, their dream is over. it is one of the themes of the show, that the characters will fight even if they know koyori will die because their dreams are so important to them, they even ssay that out loud. Its another theme of the show for after the characters lose, to realize that they dont have to achieve their dream through a wish the fast and easy way, and they start to work toward their dreams from the bottom like everyone else and become better people after they fight the main characters.

also i thought the scenes of her playing the card game were funny and cute, and it gave her some much needed personality. After she regains her voice she still wants to play that game lol.

And the animation is not that bad, its like K animation, its different, IMO it looks very psychedelic and artful, especially the scenes when the zigurrat is activating and all the psychedelic artwork is sprawling out over the scenery. The art, character design, background layouts are all very well done as I see it. the nimrods also look quite nice, although like K the fight scenes are not the shows top selling point like in a show such as Naruto they are passable at least, and good at best for a show like this.

In not a single fight did Tazuna mention that Koyori would die to the upcoming couple, so that point about "fighting knowing Koyori would die" is moot. However, it seems that while you are invested in these characters, I could not give a rat's ass about them since I can't get past each character's verbal tics. Think about it, if you didn't get the cast's backstories, how would you have defined their personalities outside of mentioning "meshing" or "shumai" all the time like they're Pokemon? Also, I didn't know Tazuna actually had a personality outside of "I fix things" and "gotta protect Koyori", so him managing to lose her is still pretty inconceivable. Lastly, I'm also sure you can think while holding hands at the same time.

If we're going to talk about achieving dreams as the overall theme of the show, Bakuman pulls this off much better where one of the reasons is because it has a cast where characters are more than just walking verbal tics with a sad backstory. The impression that Bakuman's characters were more like actual people made it a lot easier for me to want to support them on their anime/mangaka dreams since I could relate to them.

Art has been and will always be subjective, so it's fine if you think it looks good; I still think everything about the show looks like ass most of the time. You can't really convince me that the art looks good if it had already given me headaches, anyway. However, K looks a lot better given the screenshots and some of the clips I watched of it since none of the colors really seemed out of place, and there was a much better use of filter effects there.

While the show has gotten slightly better with the episode from last week, I still can't recommend people to watch the show at all as it doesn't offer anything that others can do better. Hence I think the show will likely maintain its 4/10 on my list.

The characters are extremely bland and the animation is jarring with bad CGI and bad camera angles.

The only saving grace is the soundtrack.

3/10

Also I don't know how 88expert can bash NGE. It's great.

I know I'm replying three years after the last post, but having watched the series I think a lot of the hate is unwarranted. More specifically, I think people actually stopped paying attention to the other elements such as characterization and the plot because the animation was so bad.

However, this also shows just how bad the animation for the series is. Of course, there are those who defend the animation by pointing out how we judge art is subjective, yet this doesn't mean there isn't any objective criteria. The number of people I've seen noting the animation made them feel ill shouldn't be overlooked, but there is a reason why an episode of Pokemon got banned over in Japan and never made in internationally. The screens we watch animation on now have things built in to prevent this from happening, yet they don't absolutely prevent these from happening, so the phenomenon does end up occurring. As such, one can definitely use objective criteria on judging the animation, but there are - even if you aren't effected by such animations ways to recognize the ones which can cause this.

What really interests me regarding my quick skim through of the thread is how objective criteria was used to judge the animation for this series, yet subjective criteria is used to judge the plot and characters. The characters definitely do grow through the series, although not always in the direction the viewers want or said character gets the screen time the viewer wants. There's no denying the various characters have issues. The series also took the time to explain why the characters are messed up like the way they were.

There were some weird comments which also showed people really weren't paying attention to what they watched such as assuming the two MC were siblings when they are not, yet I can't blame them. Truth is, even though I majorly enjoyed the story the animation is a major kicker for me actually recommending this to anybody. There's no getting around the fact any recommendations I write for the series will need to include a warning regarding the animation for those who are prone to motion sickness or seizures because of certain animations, but I wouldn't say the plot and characters stand out enough for someone to blindly overlook the animation issue.

It's average, something I've seen before when it comes to the characterization and plot, yet I can't help but admit I did like the characters a lot and the way the characters issues are explained - as a fanfic writer, I didn't feel a specific urge to write in the world - there are a few plot holes regarding the world they fight in, yet the characters do interest me in a way I would argue I wouldn't have a problem writing fanfic about the characters and their relationships. Even then - the animation is a problem as I've said. They're not as bad later on - still bad and still not a good thing for certain people.

Which - I saw some comments calling the people who voiced the fact they physically became ill because of the animation Anime snobs. They're not, but I can't help but think calling them Anime snobs for saying the animation made them sick probably fueled the hate on this particular Anime, but such comments are written by someone whose definitely lucky not to have ever experienced the issues certain visual effects can have on the brain.
