anime scores go higher, and go down, but I am really interested what the top anime page looked like when in for example 2008.

I dont know if this is the right place to ask this, but could anybody help me out heer?

Just use the web archives and you can see

Clannad AS, TTGL, Death Note, Haruhi movie, Kara no Kyoukai 5 and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien have all been #1 on MAL in the past at least iirc

wow, Mushishi improved its rating by an impressive 0.39 points since then, whereas Fumoffu dropped by 0.29 points. These rating changes over the course of many years might indeed be something worth looking into.

Thanks for the links, web archives seems really useful, definitely keep that one bookmarked, thanks for the link :D

Also those pics are pretty useful as well, saved the folder as well, thanks for those :D

Also, this was just so I could see the improvement some anime made, and see what the top looked like before Gintama bombed it :P

You also have to remember the userbase of MAL has increased exponentially over the years. The sample size was waaaayyy smaller back in the day

Basically the new generation are way too generous with their scoring as opposed to before. Might look into this more, got me a bit interested.

Code Geass improved by a whopping +0.54.
Amount of rating people as well as average user age might be factors, but I suspect that there's even more to that.

Generous? I don't think so.
If an Anime is good why shouldn't I rate it with a 9 or 10?

I think it's more that when MAL was new and only had a few thousand users at most, anime wasn't as "normal" as far as socializing on the internet goes. So I reckon quite a lot of the users back then were more longtime hardcore anime fans. Over time however, anime has become much more socially accepted and consequently the amount of casual users on MAL has increased a lot more percentage-wise than what they were at in the site's early days. And casual watchers tend to be less critical and be more generous with ratings in my experience, so it's not so strange if this in turn has led to the global average of MAL scores having increased over the years

Just a theory at least

Old discussion, but I've recently seen some members rate using only 10, no idea if that was a thing before too.
