Saint Seiya is originally a manga, so the OVA's followed the manga and threw one or two filler fights to make the first OVA set have some sort of decent length.
So I think your looking at Taurus's death the wrong way. The thing is in the manga, they Saint just finished their trials and defeated Poseidon, but just as soon as that is over, the real shit hits the fan, the battle that started the whole manga is finally happening, and you don't know shit about whats going on, its too fast, it;s supposed to be fast. its told in a way you are captivated by trying to figure what is happening and why it's happening, and BAM the Taurus dies. He couldn't have survived. none of them should have survived. the Athena saints where supposed to have been massacred, expect the specter underestimated the gold saint gravely and despite having received a fatal blow the Taurus died not only Standing , but having killed his opponent in one single blow. you cant get any more BADASS than that.
now as for Death Mask and Pisces, it was called ACTING. like, it seems you forgot the part where they were all Pretending to have fallen low to be as convincing as possible in order them to the gain Hades trust so they could Kill him themselves and/or tell Athena where to take the fight. That plan didn't go too too well, but the fact that they appeared along with the 10 other saints to destroy the wall of lamentation is proof enough of their devotion for Athena.
Yes though it would seem well justified in the Hades Chapter perhaps, but the OVAs always trivialise them to a great deal. Even in the original sanctuary arc Aldebaran and Pisces were defeated quite easily. I mean just look at the amount of screen time they spent expanding on the incredible powers of Shaka, Mu, Camus, Saga and all the other Gold Saints as opposed to Taurus and Pisces who don't even seem to have any psychic or extraordinary powers at all. For instance what kind of 7 sense psychic power does Pisces have? Death Mask was ok in the Sanctuary arc but like Sayuri pointed out above, his dark-sadistic personality seems to change suddenly to that of an annoying loud brat after the sanctuary!
Furthermore the so-called "acting" part in Hades or as you called it "Pretending to have fallen low" is the whole point of my discontent. While Camus and Shura were acting out-of-character and therefore could be said to be "pretending" in that case, but Pisces Aphrodite and Death Mask don't stand that ground very much 'cause they ARE generally represented AS SUCH anyway - as foolish, ignorant, weaklings and traitors. And That's precisely what I'm grumbling about.
I understand however they seem to have rich character personifications in the original manga or as hinted in the anime itself but this aspect has never been greatly explored in the officially sanctioned canonical series and OVAs (except for D.Mask in the sanctuary arc as mentioned above) |
