I remember seeing a few places online predicting that this show was expected to completely flop as far as sales were concerned. How did it end up doing (both overall and relative to expectations)?

I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised (especially with the gorgeous packaging), but I'm prepared to hear the worst. That said, the fact that I can't find anyone talking about it probably means it was unsurprising.

The first volume sold 1000 blu-rays. It seems that Japan's taste is as shitty as MAL's.

First I shall clarify that I don't dislike this anime.
But it's more like the narration is not only not everyone's taste but also very crappy in this anime, rather than 'people's taste are shitty' whatever. This anime is good but it's no masterpiece, and what's more it doesn't even TRY to sell well. So I don't feel sad about its sales figures, and imo the sales figures are actually justified.

What show did you enjoy the least last season?

It was probably that.

Kancolle sold 20000+. The average series sells 3000-5000.

It had plenty of hot lesbian sex mild fanservice, though.
Also, plenty of other "art house" anime were successful. Look at Eva, for example.
Even Penguindrum sold 5000 average (which is more impressive since it's not just from the first volume), and it's much less accessible than Yurikuma imho.

Whoa that ignorance.. So what if there are only 1k people in Japan who watch YKA, and it just happened that all of them bought the BD?

The statistical improbability of that suggestion is staggering.

Honestly their only hope is merchandise sales to redeem this series; the online store for the show is pretty big as far as options, but the only item I've heard a decent amount of excitement about (the Lulu and Ginko teddy bears) STILL haven't released, so I have a feeling that will kill a lot of sales.

It's pretty believable that this may be Ikuhara's last show: he's apparently hard to work with, and for all the critical acclaim he gets that rarely translates into money for the studio.

What is, statistically, more likely: Japan has bad taste or the anime is just bad?

There is no such thing as 'likelihood' if we're talking about something that is already a fact instead of a future event.
