I think so, not all of it is a recap and it's entertaining. Also the animation is better in some scenes. I say save it for a nice evening and watch it. It's definitely not a waste. :)

Well there's new stuff in season 2 so yeah, I think if you wanna watch it, do it before you start season 2.

In case anyone actually looks at this again trying to decide whether or not to watch it, I found it entirely a waste of time. I mean, it is not bad...just that there is no reason to watch it.
Elsewhere, a somewhat startled Warren Worthington III finds that he has accidentally wandered into an electrified east-side world of post-twist teens and watsui-ing teeny-boppers...

You can take it as an extended version of the fight against Friagne.

Can I substitute watching Season 1 with this movie? Will I miss out on anything major?

No. Yes.

The movie is different and there's only one enemy in it. Not like in the TV show where Shana and Yuji grow attached to each other as they fight together and learn about each one's background. I strongly advise to watch both. In the order they were released. That's TV first, then the movie. Maybe not on the same day.

Well, I was skeptical that a retelling of the first part of season 1's story would be worth watching. However, a few things made me change my mind....mainly the battle scenes versus Friagne were to be blunt, completely amazing. Seeing the true form of Alastor, Flame of the Heavens was super cool (a gigantic flaming demon of immense power). Other than the first half hour of the movie there was enough new expanded footage to keep up the entertainment value. A few new scenes of Shana becoming attached to Yuji, expanded scenes on the meeting of Marjory Daw, and scenes of Wilhelmina exploring the world on TV that I am almost sure were not there in the episodes of season 1. Watching this is not essential to the storyline by any means, but it was beyond a shadow of a doubt well worth the watch for anyone who appreciates more elaborate expanded upon storytelling from the first part of season 1. Being that I liked season 1 so much and gave the season a 9/10 I have to give this high marks as well. This is easily 8/10, and I am really struggling with not giving it a higher score.

First half hour 5/10 - nothing new and no reason to really watch this part unless you didn't watch season 1.

Last hour 10/10 - same story, but completely new animation and enough expanded upon things to truly make the last hour epic!

I really wish I read these comments before watching that worthless movie. I really hate recaps. They only added a couple different scenes but it's worth skipping. Don't waste your time.
