愛の悲しみ

All this time, the mood of this anime has been sorrowful, yet, as her mother said, playing this piece means you get used to sorrow and by extension find love and joy amidst the sorrow.

Kaori has been hospitalised, yet we see her smiling in spite of that.

We also see Arima forgiving his mother. Up until this episode, her face especially her eyes is not shown as though she is a monster. You can understand her motivation and somewhat become sympathetic with her in this episode, but I still maintain that her behaviour is not acceptable.

Also, Emi is cute. Marry her, please.

Also, that twat who belittled Kaori had a change of heart. Arima's performance has influenced him and for the better. If not for him, he would be the next Human Metronome.

What Saki did to her own son, Kousei? There is a special place in hell for people like her.

I don't know how nor why, but rain just started pouring heavily and seemingly nobody else noticed.
@ImNotAnOtaku1 It's a terrible day for a rain

I know I'm not the only one who finds it difficult to feel sympathy for Kousei's mother after how explicitly the show depicted her abuse of her son
I mean there's a clear difference between tough love and actual abuse
It's understandable to have mixed feelings about a deceased parent, but they don't portray those feelings as mixed at all. The show frames this episode as somewhat of a redemption and it feels undeserved
@tiaamyom I agree

I watched this series for the first time about 7-8 years ago when I was fresh out of school, ready to start my graduate degree. The series made me sad but that was about it, this was around the time Fault in Our Stars etc. had just made waves and even those films made me misty-eyed at the most but never really hit too hard.
Today, as I continue with a long overdue rewatch, I've just crossed Episode 13 'Love' where Kousei performs Love's Sorrow alone and he processes his complicated feelings for his mother.
I lost my mother to cancer recently and watching this, I cannot stop crying. I was angry at his mom, just like I was with mine, for not being a "good mother", for hitting him, for traumatising him. Yet here we are, we see the woman behind the 'mother' who is desperately clinging onto the little time she has, worried if she was a good mother to him, worried if he'll be able to make a living out of music. It doesn't heal everything but it heals a little something.
