Here's the deal, I dropped this after the 2nd episode, but I've been hearing people say some pretty good things about this too.

I couldn't stand some of the cheap shots they pulled. And it was kind of dumb the way the show made that one girl beat up another megane girl for the sake of making her look like an extreme bitch. Like they were trying to stir something inside me, but it was so absurd that I couldn't take it seriously.

I also didn't like the incest portion. Does that get heavier or less as it goes on?

Also the duels. I wanted a little more than a shootout. Maybe there was more than that and I forgot? It's just the opening kinda promised me some swordfights, so if there are swordfights or any kind of hand to hand combat, then that'd be good to know.

So does this get better after episode 2? And is it likely to change my mind as I watch? I keep hearing people telling me it's underrated and whatnot, so let's hear it.

Unfortunately no, I don't think you'll gain anything out of Selector Infected by picking it up now. It has very little budget, they can't spend it on heavy action scenes or having dynamic card battles with lots of tactics. They never explain the rules and never will.

It's a character story, if you don't sympathize with them, it doesn't work. Yes, the emotional manipulation is very basic and even creates plot holes later on, but I find it to be good enough above the mediocrity/shit that is most of the season. Certainly better than Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou I can tell you that for a fact.

It's a better Madoka Magica for me, since we get to experience more of the characters' feelings and troubles in the Faustian gambit they were pulled into. It's psychological, though not at all psychedelic. The plot twists are well foreshadowed even if they seem cheap they are well done and are not entirely SHOCK FACTOR but a logical development for the plot and characters.

The incest subplot, I admit it's also cheap, but it serves its role in advancing the main story and developing characters, and is also done well without malicious intent, it really does seem like earnest love, instead of just otaku bait.

The stalling of the previous 2 episodes wasn't very smart, but they did serve their purpose on developing the characters a bit. As for now the last 2 episodes should finish this arc and leave something for the Autumn cour of the series.

I dropped it too but when the 7th-8th was aired I pick it up again for the same reason. This show is fine and its better that most of this season.

It's often so hard to tell, I mean if it really does improve significantly I'm kind of asking the same question, but like people have a habit of getting all up in arms over pretty much nothing. I assume it had some twists and turns as it went along, but like it's hard to tell if it's anything significant or just some kind of dark things happened and people responded like it was a stroke of genius. Thing is a lot of people, particularly on MAL tend to see genius in just about anything dark or yandere or twisty or whatever, but the devil as they say is in the details and that's something I'm not quite clear on. Where I dropped it around episode 5 one could argue the show was already kind of dark but in that typical Mari Okada melodramatic mean girls kind of way as opposed to realistically harsh or sobering.

Oh well I have time right now so probably going to do it.

^ I thought it was mediocre there too but I think the characterization is done rather well. The twist isn't just a forced twist either.

I like this show more than Madoka. Characters done right and not overly abstract.

Its worth picking back up. Those last few episodes... Jesus Christ they were amazing! Especially the season Finale. This show just shot up to a 4 way tie for my favorite show for the season.
Watch Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, you wont be disappointed. http://q.pokefarm.org/user/Uran10

Think of it as a card game deconstruction and lollies with psychological issues. Also expect plot holes, because emotional manipulation is more important than a good tightly knit story.

It's realistic, kind of, writing but not anything impressive and it is harsh, the torture train has no breaks, at least unlike Madoka this focuses on its characters, maybe a little too much/

It gets shittier after episode 2, but picks up around episodes 7-9, most likely 9.

Thats a lot of episodes to reap rewards from, and its certainly not an amazing plot twist or anything. As T3hSource says, if you don't sympathize with the characters, you won't like it.

THIS.

By the way, I think it's safe to say the show growned a beard around episode 5, and totally blossomed in what I (and many others) were expecting around Epi 7/8.

But like said there, if you don't liked the characters, you won't like the show at all.

On a sidenote I also think the final episode twist was done waaay better than that

But that just me.

if you're looking for action/sword fights you won't get any. having said that, the show isn't an action one at all, it's purely psychological. the card game only serves as a means to an end. although the show is based off of this game, the show is more about character interactions than the card game itself.
as for the incest, it does not get any more pronounced than it was at the beginning.

and yes, as people have been saying, it does get better as you go on!

i don't agree with generalisations.
i didn't feel emotionally attached to the characters in any way shape or form, well maybe H***E, but i still enjoyed it to an extent. i didn't like the show for the characters, i liked it for the situations they were put in (maybe i'm just a weirdo :P).
