While there are similarities, especially near the beginning, the anime adaptation veers off into a pretty new direction as it progresses. Although the general idea of the show is similar to the game, the events are very different from one another. Fitting the entire plot of the game into a 4-part series wouldn't have worked, so obviously, it had to be adjusted... drastically. Honestly, the entire series feels incomplete and rushed, and in my opinion, would just harm the powerful effect the game gives. In that regard, I wouldn't recommend watching the anime before playing the game, if at all.

It's probably most appropriate to give this series the same motto that Tsukihime has: "There is no anime."

Oh, please, it's not that bad.

For a 4-episode OVA, I thought it did quite well in giving off the atmosphere of the game. Of course you're gonna have differences compared to the game, and I would have liked a more straight-on adaptation as well, but to say it's bad for veering off the set course is doing the anime a lot of injustice, IMO.

In that regard, I wouldn't recommend watching the anime before playing the game, if at all.

I actually think it's better to do that. If you don't know the source, you won't be (as) disappointed. It's similar to watching an anime before reading the manga or LN that came before it.

That's the problem in itself right there. As I said, trying to fit the content of this plot into four episodes was a mistake. It might have captured the atmosphere of the game, but it definitely doesn't feel the same to me. Most of the really twisted stuff that gave me goosebumps, like the Victim's Memoirs, are nowhere to be found in the anime. Likewise, some of the bad ends you can encounter in the game (namely Naomi's scissor one) are also obviously missing. The lack of all those things change the complete nature of the anime from that of the game's. Most of the time, anime adaptations really lack in detail, so this is nothing unique to Corpse Party. However, trying to justify it by saying "it did it's best for four episodes" doesn't make it any better than it actually was.

The anime is going to disappoint anyways, so I'd prefer to experience the game fresh and not be spoiled by anything prior, rather than change my rating for the anime adaptation from a 6 to a 7. That's my logic anyways.

Well I watched this first before playing the game..and some parts felt rushed.
(Eg that scene skip from 1 tongue bag to 3 tongue bags).

After playing the game though, I started understanding all the scenes in the anime and I can say that its definitely made for the game fans in mind...(the fact that its an OVA and not a full fledged TV series is another)

On another point, seems like they tried cramming all the possible Wrong End deaths into the anime version...and created a new one as well. (eg I don't remember the swapping of paper charm piece ever hinted / mentioned in the game)

With the way they butchered the story from ep 3 on out, i wish they just waited for a bigger budget or even use kickstarter, or just never made a anime at all, It would be good if it wasn't a adaption from a brilliant game and what really killed it for me was the uneccesary forced deaths that were never supposed to happen.

nothing beats corpse party the animation in awfulness, especially when you look at the source material.

let me quote my review for it here:

"Corpse party was originally a PC-98 game. then it got a remake on the PC,PSP,and 3DS. i played it and fell in love with it. it has one of the BEST stories i have ever seen. its horror is psychotic not cheap, its gore is mostly auditory not visual.I dont even like horror games yet i absolutely LOVE it.

so what does the anime do? It takes this great story and throws it out the window. it takes the awesome psychotic horror and makes it cheap, and it takes the auditory gore and,not only does it fully change it to visual gore,it decides that the best way to do this masterpiece of a game (in)justice is to change it so it becomes one very gory death scene after one very gory death scene from the beginning until the end. story? what is that?! psychotic horror?? what is that?!! greatness??? never heard of it!!!!

It butchered the game and turned an amazing Mindf*** true horror story into a series of gruesome scenes one after another without anytime to build tension and fear with the only point being to kill everyone in the most gore filled way possible(which is basically what all haters think the game is lol.)

Stay far far away from this. play the game instead."

This anime is just spite in the face for me. It's like replacing Mona Lisa with parris hilton. As a fan of all 4 games, I am disgusted with what they have done to plot, characters, atmosFEAR...
