haven't watched the original, am down to if it's ABSOLUTELY necessary. I get that for the overall experience, watching the original and then watching the rebuilds is probably the way to go. What i'm wondering is whether content wise, the rebuilds stand on there own and is it understandable without watching any of the original?

Thanks!

The original TV series and End of Evangelion are way better than the Rebuild movies. So I see no reason why anyone would not want to watch it.

The movies have different slighhtly different story than the original series. I suggest to watch it like this: 1. Neon Genesis Evangelion 2. End of Evangelion. 3. Movies.
You all need to watch Nami.

The hipster is strong with this one.

Rebuilds are just as awesome as the TV series.

that's not true at all. there's so much more to the original. I enjoy the rebuilds (rebuilds, not remakes) but the original should definitely be watched before hand

I enjoy both very much, but I would definitely watch NGE beforehand if not for the reason that they pretty much just brush over Asuka's characterization in the movie, imo. You've probably watched everything by now, just giving my two cents~

As it stands, it seems as though the rebuild was trying deliberately to cut all the best scenes from the original. There's a quote in the original that gave me goosebumps simply because of it's genius, but they removed that too.

The remake does improve the story in terms of raw plot events. If you created a flow chart of the events, the remake is an improvement, but it's lesser in the subtleties. The subtlety's of a piece of entertainment (whether game, anime, book or manga), are the most important things to that medium. The remake of Evangelion is better in the large scale, but not the finer details. Overall the remakes are a worse product, shorter and worth the viewers time, but worse none the less.

The movies are way better and the characters are not nearly as obnoxious
