Welcome! This club is about trans representation in character form, or media made by trans people, but media with trans themes or interpretations are also relevant (I'd love to hear what things you have trans readings of).
The aim of this club is to talk about all kinds of trans rep, good and bad and inbetween with people who are interested. And also to act as a starting point for people interested in finding trans animanga because there's more of it out there than you might think!
Inspired by Logan-Ashley Kisner's trans horror film archival project
The list doesn't include characters who cross-dress, characters who disguise themselves as a different gender temporarily for plot purposes with no other indication of transness, or characters who are gender non-conforming.
I've tried to keep the character list as unambigious as possible, but because of the way trans characters have been written and peoples' response to them, the lines on these categorisations can be a little blurred. As such, all the listed characters are ones who I think a trans reading can be strongly argued for with evidence from the source material and the writers' own comments.
I haven't included Love Me For Who I Am or characters from the series because of allegatons that Kata Konayama has drawn loli. I haven't looked into it, I will at some point. I'm not interested in a debate about whether it's okay or not, I just don't want that kind of content to be in this space. (And since this might come up) I haven't checked through all of the writers, animators etc on this list, if some of the staff have been involved in similar scandals I just don't know about them yet. If you know something I don't, please let me know and I can change that.
