Zolf J. Kimblee (The Crimson Alchemist) is a deranged psychopath who loves the sight of blood and death. 
He earned fame during the Isvalan Civil War for killing thousands without remorse through his unique brand of alchemy, Using transmutation circles tattooed to the palms of his hands, Kimblee can turn anything he comes into contact with into a bomb, be it people or distant buildings, He was put in jail for his crimes.

Those tattoos of his, because of them he can use alchemy, his alchemy is simple, he can destroy anything with his alchemy, his alchemy is for destruction.

As for his activity in the Ishval war, it's because it's his Job ,you gotta do what you've gotta do, plus the philosopher stone in his possession gave him extraordinary powers.
