Reki Kawahara a light novelist, best known for his works Sword Art Online and Accel World. Originally a web novelist, after winning the Dengeki Novel Grand Prize in 2008 with Accel World, it began publishing in Japan under ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko imprint. Soon after Accel World began publishing, Sword Art Online also began publishing in print.
During the production of Accel World's anime adaptation, Kawahara voiced Tin Writer.
During the production of Sword Art Online's anime adaptation, Kawahara drafted a plot for episode 2 of the adaptation. This plot detailed the first floor boss battle in Aincrad and Kirito and Asuna's true first meeting. Soon after he expanded on this story and also went on to write a story detailing the events that took place on the second floor of Aincrad too, this was later published as the first volume of Sword Art Online: Progressive.
During his time as a web novelist, Kawahara also penned a third series, originally entitled: Isolation. It was later picked up by Kawahara under the Dengeki Bunko imprint in 2014, under the title: Zettai Naru Isolator.
Accel World has spawned a manga adaptation of the same name and a spinoff manga series; Accel World / Dural: Magisa Garden. A 4-koma series has also been published.
Sword Art Online had spawned several manga adaptations of many of its story arcs (Aincrad, Fairy Dance, Phantom Bullet, Mother's Rosario and Calibur). It has also spawned a manga spinoff - Sword Art Online: Girl's Ops. The Progressive series also received a manga adaptation. Sword Art Online also spawned a spinoff novel series entitled Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, penned by Sigsawa Keiichi (also known for his series Kino no Tabi). The Alternative Series has also received a manga adaptation. As well as these, a 4-koma series has also been published, along with multiple comic anthologies. Kawahara has also published multiple doujinshis for the series.
Zettai Naru Isolator has also spawned a manga adaptation.
Accel World, Sword Art Online, Sword Art Online Progressive and Zettai Naru Isolator have all been published in English by Yen Press under their Yen On imprint.
Accel World's manga adaptation and Sword Art Online's Aincrad, Fairy Dance, Phantom Bullet, Mother's Rosario, Progressive and Girl's Ops manga adaptation's have all been licensed in English by Yen Press.
