The gargoyles are a race of very powerful winged beings who were the defenders of a keep in the year 994 A.D.. By day, they are immobilized in stone as statues on the castle parapets. When the sun sets, the stone turns to flesh and they take to their task of defending their home. They do not have names of their own, but eventually take names to deal more easily with humans. Thanks to a betrayal, all but six of the gargoyles were destroyed, and the remaining ones were turned to stone "until the castle rises above the clouds".
A thousand years passed and the year was then 1994. A rich businessman, David Xanatos, bought the castle, and moved it stone by stone to the top of a skyscraper in Manhattan. The sun set on the gargoyles and they came back to life, free of their curse. They had a hard time dealing with their new environment, and had to deal with their feelings of mistrust toward humans--a mistrust that was deepened by another betrayal. It was revealed that one other gargoyle, Demona, survived the destruction in 994, and she was also at the heart of both betrayals. Her hatred for humanity runs deep, and fuels her less-than-honorable intentions. The gargoyles had one human friend, a police detective named Elisa Maza. With her help, the gargoyles began to assimilate into the twentieth century, and began to trust. They abandoned the castle and set up a secret home in the clock tower of the New York Police Department 23th precinct station where Elisa worked.
Over the course of the next year, the clan battled the forces of evil such as Demona, Xanatos, Gangsters like Anthony Dracon, the diabolical Dr. Anton Sevarius, the corrupt clone Thailog, the mysterious Illuminati, even the godlike Children of Oberon. In their adventures, enemies and friends were made and innocence was lost as the clan followed their oath to protect the city.
Goliath and Elisa later learned that the eggs abandoned in the tenth century were adults on the magical island of Avalon. Following the battle against the Archmage to help them there, he, Elisa, Bronx and his newfound daughter, Angela, traveled the world with the Mists of Avalon sending them on an extended quest to protect the innocent and awaken others to their destiny as heroic allies in this world. Along the way, things and beings previously thought to be myth were revealed to be actual fact while the companions learned they are not the only Gargoyles when they discovered clans all over the world. This quest ended with a titanic battle of the clan opposing the Fay Lord Oberon himself in Manhattan as he attempted to abduct the newborn child of the Xanatoses upon learning that both mother and son are descendants from the Lady Titania, his wife.
The ensuing relative peace proved short-lived as the Hunters, the hereditary enemies of all Gargoyles, and especially Demona, returned to strike against the clan. In doing so, their secret home was destroyed and the existence of the clan was finally fully exposed to the public. Even as they foiled Demona's grandest scheme of genocide, the clan was revealed and generally feared by a human population unfamiliar with these beings. Only a grateful Xanatos has offered them refuge in their ancient castle as a sign of their settled feud. Now, Goliath and the others must battle to protect their city while trying to convince the human population that they mean no harm to the innocent. That task is made all the more difficult with the prevailing fear being exploited by the last Hunter forming the murderous Quarrymen.
The task is great and the dangers many, but the clan stands ready to prove themselves to a doubtful world by doing what they do best. In short, Gargoyles protect, and hope that others will understand.
Goliath He is the leader of the gargoyles. Noble and intelligent though a bit naive and set in his ways. His sense of honor and loyalty are his greatest strengths. His physical strength and anger can be very impressive. He does not trust humans, but he thinks that an understanding between human and gargoyle can be reached. He is very traditional and has had some difficulty adjusting to the modern world with his relationship with Elisa being only one of these challenges. He was originally the mate of Demona, but that relationship was totally gone by the time the clan was revived in 1994. He could not accept that fact and made various attempts to sway her back to him. He only accepted it when an attempt to influence an earlier version of Demona during a time trip to the 10th century failed to change her. When she turned New York into stone by night, he resolved to kill her to end her menace, but was swayed by the Weird Sisters that life was too precious even to allow the murderous renegade to die at Macbeth's hand. His feelings for Elisa Maza began simply as respect and an attachment to the first human in the modern world to treat them with respect and friendship. Eventually the relationship deepened over their various adventures until they came to realize that they were falling seriously in love with each other. Hudson Oldest of the gargoyles, this one-eyed warrior is a voice of wisdom among his peers which serves him well as Goliath and Brooklyn's advisor. He is terribly fond of the pastime of television and interestingly, is the only clan member who regularly fights with a weapon, a sword in this case. His greatest shame is the fact that he can't read. However, with the help of a blind veteran, he is learning. He was captured by Xanatos for use in an immortality experiment. Using his resourcefulness, he escaped unharmed. Although it has never been said on-camera, according to the creators, Hudson is Broadway's biological father. Brooklyn One of the trio of younger male gargoyles and the least human looking of the clan with a pronounced, but not unattractive, beaklike mouth. While he does not have the sheer physical strength and presence of Goliath, that is more than compensated by his keen calculating nature. He is much more a planner and usually tends to carefully consider his moves before acting when he has sufficient emotional distance to the opponent. As a result, he is capable of leading devastating assaults that leave his enemies reeling. When the situation requires it, he can also be quite subtle and patient in his methods, making him a superb leader in most situations. Leather jackets and sunglasses suit him well. He is young and impetuous with a strong sarcastic wit, but a fine warrior. He was appointed second in command in Upgrade. When Goliath disappeared to Avalon, Brooklyn was initially reluctant to assume his duties, but later proved to be an excellent leader. In contrast to his successful career, his love life has been a source of constant frustration. First, he tried to help and woo Maggie Reed, a human who was genetically mutated into a crude gargoyle approximation against her will by Anton Sevarius. She rejected him forcefully, siding with Derek Maza/Talon. Yet he was gallant enough to come to her aid when she begged to him to help her confront Fang. Later he competed with the trio for the hand of Angela, until she put an end to that insulting rivalry. When she chose Broadway, Brooklyn was heartbroken and is having difficulty accepting it. Finally, while all of the Manhattan clan consider Demona their enemy, it is Brooklyn who truly hates the insane renegade. This stems from how she took advantage of his naivety to persuade him to betray the clan and steal the Grimorum so she could enslave Goliath. Brooklyn managed to rescue Goliath and defeat Demona, but the shame of being manipulated so scarred him. This experience, along with the knowledge that she is responsible for more gargoyle deaths than any individual human, has made him Demona's bitterest enemy amongst the gargoyles. This often makes him instantly attack Demona on sight and he loses the emotional distance needed to concoct his strategies. Lexington The smallest of the Gargoyles and the only one whose wing construction is web based like a flying squirrel. He is also the most technically proficient and he clearly enjoys the modern period more than anyone else with its abundance of high technology. However, social interaction is tougher for him and that got him into trouble when he approached his TV idols, the Pack. When he arranged a meeting, he unwittingly walked into an ambush where he and Goliath were the quarry for a bout of sport hunting by the Pack. The pair escaped, but Lex felt profoundly betrayed and still bears a personal grudge with most of the members of the disbanded group. Lex has proven to be closest to Alexander Xanatos out of all the clan. It is that love for the boy that allowed him to come to some reconciliation with Fox, who was the leader of the Pack. In the Future Tense illusion Puck used on Goliath, the most frightening element was that the root of that nightmare scene was that it was the future Lex's doing. So there is that threat that Lexington could become a murderous megalomaniac in the future. It's a disturbing portent that could fundamentally change his relationship with the clan when they learn of it. Broadway He loves to eat, and it shows. A true gourmet, he believes in experiencing every conceivable form of culinary delight which he enjoys as the clan's cook. His somewhat pudgy exterior hides a fierce and intelligent warrior underneath, however. He, like Hudson, was also illiterate, but the idea of being to able to vicariously experience the past through reading later enthralled him and he set out to learn the skill. Ever since he accidentally shot Elisa, he has had a intense scorn for guns and habitually destroys any he gets his hands on at convenient times. Despite that stupid accident, Broadway and Elisa have no hard feelings and have worked together on her cases occasionally. During these excursions, Broadway has shown to have some real talent in detective work and logical deduction, even if his skills are based on movies and TV shows. It's a skill that proved vital in the investigation of the Silver Falcon case for instance. By the end of the canon series, not only has he become quite literate, but also has developed a taste for poetry. When Angela arrived in New York, he competed with the other kids for her favor. Although she soon objected to this insulting behavior, Broadway's sensitive nature allowed him to prevent offending her as much as the others inadvertently did. Angela recognized this courtesy and chose him to be her lover and future mate. Angela Goliath and Demona's daughter. Angela was raised by Katharine, Tom and the Magus in Avalon, with the rest of her rookery brothers and sisters. After the Archmage was defeated, Angela returned with Goliath to Manhattan. Angela is very clever and intelligent. In that, she is more like her mother than anyone would care to admit. She nicely compliments Goliath's naivety. When she settled in New York, she became the object of rivalry amongst the younger trio. This continued until she lost her patience and demanded they stop treating her like a prize to win. At the end of the canon episodes, she has chosen Broadway due to his sensitive nature. As for her mother, she still has some love for her, but it is coupled with the knowledge that she is never to be trusted. This could lead to some friction with Brooklyn when she realizes his intense hatred for Demona. Bronx The clan's pet gargoyle beast. He is very loyal and loving toward his masters, but cunning and quite fierce when roused. Lack of wings make him less mobile than the others. Elisa Maza The police detective who is the gargoyles' first true modern human friend. She shows them the world of 20th Century Manhattan, and they help her out with the occasional thug. She was accidentally shot by Broadway (cf. Deadly Force) and now keeps her gun locked up. This incident also saddled her with a partner named Matt Bluestone. By nature a loner, this change in her job irked her and it took weeks to adjust to his continual present with her. At first Elisa also took pains to hide the clan's existence and her connection to them from him. However, when Matt confronted her with the knowledge he gained from a senior Illuminati member, she introduced him to them. Now the pair work smoothly together as they do their job while still looking out for the clan's welfare. Her loyalty to the Gargoyles goes much deeper than owing Goliath her life. By the end of the series, she realizes that she truly loves the Gargoyle. However, the implications of that still have to be worked out between her and the Gargoyle. Matt Bluestone Elisa's police partner. Capt. Chavez assigned the two together after Elisa recovered from her gunshot wound. He is a conspiracy fanatic, and believes all of the paranormal stories such as UFO's, secret societies, etc. He used to work for the FBI and worked on uncovering the Illuminati, a secret society, in his spare time. That lead to an obsessive search that got him fired from the bureau. Matt's Illuminati quest finally panned out when he found Mace Malone, a 100-year old gangster who was surprisingly fit. Mace offered Matt membership in the league for his persistence, but he had to pass a test first. After Matt was told about the clan and Elisa's connection to them as an act of good faith on their part, he was told to deliver Goliath to Mace. Matt confronted Elisa with that info and finally got Elisa to share the gargoyles with him, and he and Goliath conspired together to foil Mace's plan. As a result of his ingenuity, Matt was granted membership in the Illuminati. His exact motives are still unclear. Now with the Gargoyles exposed, he has been assigned to head a taskforce assigned the task to capture the clan. He walks a precarious tightrope as he tries to protect the clan without causing suspicion as to his team's lack of effectiveness. David Xanatos The businessman who is responsible for breaking the spell that the gargoyles were under for a thousand years. A tremendous case of megalomania pervaded his actions. He used to quest for power at any cost. Xanatos found his true love and only weakness in Fox, whom he married. The honeymoon was spent in the tenth century, where Xanatos was revealed to be a member of the Illuminati Society (though apparently only a low-ranking member). He mailed a tenth century coin to himself in 1975, and from that, he built his fortune. However, that came at the cost of alienating his father who was offended by David's machiavellian ruthlessness. Xanatos also seems to fear death. His genetics research and other intellectual pursuits tended to focus on prolonging his life. Even when he was a clear enemy to the clan, David was a unique villain. He never bore a grudge against his enemies and often saw the bright side of any failure he experienced. However, he was still capable of despicable acts as when he arranged to have various homeless people and Derek Maza's genetic structures altered against their will in order to have a gargoyle like goon squad at his disposal. The Xanatoses recently had a child named Alexander, a fact of interest not only to the social columns, but the Lord of Avalon as well. At the persuasion of Titania, Oberon attempted to abduct the child to Avalon. The Xanatoses resisted the attack with the help of Goliath and his clan. For their part in protecting his child, David considered himself owing a massive debt to the Manhattan clan. The incident also allowed him to reconcile with his father who was impressed by David's fierce effort to protect his son. His efforts at repayment were twofold. The first was the removal of the conflicting personalities in Coldstone into separate bodies. The second was to allow the clan access to the castle after the clock tower was destroyed by the Hunters as a sign that their differences have been settled. How this change of heart will affect his future plans is unknown. Puck / Owen Burnett One of Oberon's Children. He is the mystical being who is featured in the Shakespearean play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. He exists nowadays mainly as the human Owen Burnett, personal assistant to David Xanatos. Unlike the exuberant trickster, Owen is extremely straightlaced and understated in all his actions with his emotions under almost Vulcan like control.. In the twentieth Century, he was intrigued by Titania's attraction to a human, Halcyon Renard. Wondering what interacting with a human on a equal basis would be like, he decided to try his own hand at passing himself as a mortal. With the idea of a trickster playing the straight man, he modeled himself after Preston Vogel, Renard's assistant and the stiffest and most uptight personality he knew and created Owen. In order to get the full experience, Owen was designed to have no magical abilities beyond the ability to change back into Puck. Thus he intentionally made himself vulnerable to all risks that a typical human would have to face. This includes being affected by Demona's spell to turn all humans into stone by night. He worked for Cyberbiotics until he grew bored with the Renards and joined David Xanatos. At a later time, when he learned about Xanatos' interest in magic, he revealed himself to the billionaire and presented him with a choice; a wish or a lifetime of service as Owen. Xanatos chose the latter and Puck was so impressed by this foregoing of immediate pleasures that he decided to live up to his end of the deal. To this end, the deal was that Owen would confine his services as a mortal, with no magic being used. During this arrangement, he cooperated fully with Xanatos' wishes while providing the necessary mortal aid in order to further his boss' plans. This included the eventual revival of Goliath's clan and the later attempt to murder them. All the while, Owen gave unquestioning obedience. This extended so far as to when Hudson escaped from Xanatos' test of the Cauldron of Life. Owen volunteered himself without hesitation. As a result, he now sports a stone left hand from the forearm down and Puck has refused to restore it because it would have ruined the experience of playing mortal to have such an easy solution. At one point, he was caught off guard by Demona as she summoned him as Puck through Titania's mirror and bound him in iron chains to force him to serve her. However, the combination of Puck continually taking advantage of Demona's poorly worded wishes, and the victory of the Manhattan clan over her despite Puck's help, convinced her that Puck was not worth the effort to control. Just prior to the return of Oberon to Avalon, the imp attempted to gain possession of the Phoenix Gate in order to persuade Oberon to exempt him from the Gathering. To do this, he made Goliath experience an hallucination of a nightmare futuristic dystopia of Manhattan and his clan, using a mixture of fiction and true future events. This was intended to trick Goliath with the idea that this horror had to be prevented by giving the Gate to any of the characters in the illusion which were all disguised forms of Puck, since he is prohibited from simply taking it himself. Goliath eventually saw through the deception and Puck had to abandon the scheme, especially after Goliath made the Gate do a blind time jump to prevent others from using it. When Oberon agreed to abduct Alexander Xanatos, Puck aided in the battle. This involved the past preparations of specific defenses against Fay assaults and finally as Puck himself. At the conclusion of the battle, Oberon agreed to desist, but not before punishing Puck for defying his monarch. Oberon stripped him of the use of his magic except in the education or defense of Alexander. That proviso was in allowance of Puck's agreement to tutor Alexander in the use of his mystic power potential. Fortunately for Puck, this restriction seems to allow him to interpret educating Alex rather broadly. Thus he is capable of using his powers as long as Alexander is present and involved in some manner. Otherwise, Puck is permanently in the form of Owen and is barred from Avalon indefinitely. Janine ''Fox'' Xanatos Former leader of The Pack. Compared to her family, she is a wildcat with a sense of ethics that, before the birth of her son, could be charitably described as flexible. She can be impulsive and forceful in her demeanor, but she is capable of remorse and is trying to make peace with her former Gargoyle enemies. She was the brains of the Pack, but landed in prison with the others. She did not escape when the opportunity presented itself, and thereby earned an early parole. Xanatos staged everything for her parole so they could be together. The two of them are now married, having had an interesting engagement, as Fox was transformed into a werewolf by the Eye of Odin, Xanatos' wedding gift. An even more interesting honeymoon was had in the tenth century thanks to the Phoenix Gate. Fox is the daughter of Halcyon Renard, owner of Cyberbiotics. She attempted to destroy his second air fortress and take over his company "for the fun of it." During that time, she became pregnant with a son whom the couple would name Alexander. On the night of her son's introduction to his extended family, her mother revealed herself to be Titania, Wife of Oberon. Titania persuaded Oberon to abduct Fox's son so his mystical potential would not be wasted as it was with Fox. The resulting struggle provided the necessary stress Titania was looking for in order for Fox to tap her potential of a half child of Oberon. With this display, Fox was allowed to keep her child with Puck as tutor. Alexander Fox Xanatos The son of David and Fox Xanatos. With his mother being the child of the Queen of Avalon, he possesses a tremendous potential mystical power which Puck has been commanded to develop. Furthermore, since Puck's power can only be used in the education or protection of him, whatever Puck wants to do with his power must directly involve Alexander in some fashion. Macbeth An immortal former King of Scotland now locked into an eternal conflict with Demona that can only end with the death of both. He is guided by a strong code of personal honor that prevents him from relying on the underhanded tactics Demona prefers, as in that, even in his deepest enmity to the clan, he refused to kill them by smashing their stone forms. He and Demona have interlinked histories. She helped him win the throne of Scotland in the 11th century, and he gave her her name with a promise to coexist with her kind. They were linked for all eternity by the Weird Sisters, with the human trading his youth to achieve immortality and Demona's aid. The only way they can die is for one to kill the other, with feeling each other's pain. Demona betrayed his trust and brought the destruction of her clan once more. When he was thought to have been killed by Canmore, Gruoch, his wife, insisted that he go into hiding since his people would likely not accept him as an immortal. During the years leading up to the twentieth century, while pursuing Demona for her treachery, he was accumulating a vast fortune quietly in order to obtain the equipment and resources to battle and kill Demona. He finally saw his opportunity to move when he learned of disbelieved reports of Gargoyles active in New York and close links to David Xanatos' castle. He came to Xanatos in prison and offered to help deal with Goliath and his comrades, requesting a fee for his services as not to arouse suspicion as to his motives. This was done to get hostages to lure Demona to him, but he had to abandon that idea when he learned that the clan opposed her. He later attempted to steal the Scrolls of Merlin to gain their magic, but found that they were only diaries and relinquished them to Goliath. The Weird Sisters manipulated the two of them to help them take back Avalon. This included the stealing of several magic items from the Manhattan clan and then openly attacking the island. During that battle, he fell to King Arthur Pendragon and he was sent away with no memory of his activities under the Sister's control.. After being freed from the Weird Sisters, he ended up in France where he courted a red headed woman. However, upon marriage she turned out to be Demona, who is human during the day. They were manipulated to fight each other by Thailog, who hoped that they would kill each other so he could control the combination of his, Demona's and Macbeth's fortunes alone. Goliath and Elisa interfered in this and saved Macbeth's life. This led to Macbeth finally making peace with Goliath while the gargoyle pointed out that the immortal still had a reason to live if he was capable of romantic relationships. Later Macbeth traveled to New York to perform a summoning spell which produced King Arthur Pendragon and Griff. Upon learning about their quest for Excalibur, Arthur's legendary magic sword, he raced them to gain the weapon himself to claim the birthright as The Once and Future King, using his past reign as a monarch as justification. However, the sword he took was only a decoy and Arthur found the real one thus securing his birthright. Macbeth acknowledged this and the pair reconciled. Arthur then asked him to be one of his knights. Macbeth refused to be subordinate to him, but offered his aid should Arthur ever need it. He later took up shop as a history teacher and has publicly defended the Gargoyles on television. Presumably, the clan can count on his help as an ally should Demona make another genocide attempt. Peter Maza Father of Elisa Maza. He is a police sergeant and the primary reason that his two children are both police officers. As a young man, he decided to abandon his father's Reservation to pursue a more modern life. This encouraged a skeptical attitude towards his father's beliefs (most likely Hopi), creating a rift that was never reconciled. He was forced to abandon that attitude when he found himself having to help the mystical being, "The Coyote", escape the clutches of Xanatos. The being mentioned that the two were linked and his presence was necessary for the Coyote to defend himself. Diane Maza Elisa's mother. She believes in her children's ability to decide what is best for themselves. A scholar in various African cultures, she took an excursion to Africa to learn about the traditional culture of a certain tribe. While she was there, she met Elisa, who was on the world tour with Goliath, Angela and Bronx courtesy of the Mists of Avalon. Demanding an explanation as to her disappearance and subsequent appearance thousands of miles from New York, Elisa was forced to introduce her to the Gargoyles who helped explain their situation. Together, Diane helped the gang along with the resident werepanthers oppose Anubis, the Spider god, and defeat him. Beth Maza Eliza's sister. Unlike Elisa, she decided to follow her mother's footsteps and is studying the various Amerindian tribe cultures at Flagstaff University in Arizona. That led to her investigating Xanatos' operations concerning a land carving of the Coyote and uncovering his plan to enslave the Child of Oberon, Coyote. She is less serious minded than Elisa, yet she is as committed to her own work as Elisa is to hers. Derek Maza / Talon Elisa's brother. He is very headstrong and independent. He was once a member of the NYPD as a helicopter pilot, but left to be in the employ of David Xanatos as his pilot and bodyguard. He was injected with a mutagenic agent that turned him into a creature that is part panther and part bat. He then called himself Talon and blamed the gargoyles for his plight. The transformation was apparently an accident, but it was actually part of Xanatos' plan to have a group of Gargoyle equivalents loyally serving him. Later he learned of Xanatos' role in his change and turned against him while reconciling with Goliath. He settled in the old Cyberbiotics underground lab, now the Labyrinth, with the rest of the Mutates looking out for the homeless there as a benevolent anarchy. When Fang attempted to seize control of the place, Derek was forced to assume authority as leader upon Fang's defeat. Derek later agreed to hold Demona prisoner in the Labyrinth. Unfortunately this was part of Demona's plan to get genetic material from the Gargoyles to create primitive slave clones and he was captured with the others. When they freed themselves and Thailog and Demona disappeared while fighting each other, he decided to take in the primitive clones of the Manhattan clan in order to educate them as much as their intelligence would allow. Claw A member of the Mutates. His genetic structure was altered along the lines of a tiger. This made him the strongest member, but the manipulation also rendered him mute. After the group established themselves in the Labyrinth, he partnered with Fang in intimidating the homeless and attempted to seize control of the place. He eventually rebelled and helped bring Fang down. Maggie Reed A member of the Mutates. Originally from Ohio, she was a homeless person when she was abducted by Sevarius and her genetic structure was manipulated into a feline based Gargoyle approximation against her will. She escaped from the lab and ran into Brooklyn who immediately became infatuated with her. Unfortunately, she spurned his advances and offers while stubbornly asserting her humanity. This attitude was reinforced when a raid on the lab made it appear that Sevarius was killed and the only antidote to her and the others' condition was lost. They turned to Xanatos who offered to help them if they could serve him the meantime. She and the others forcefully agreed, unaware that all these events were arranged by Xanatos to get their loyalty as a goon squad for him. She and the others later found Sevarius alive and in the company of Goliath (who was forcing the scientist to make a cure for the Mutates). When the resulting fight was interrupted by Sevarius who claimed to have developed the antidote, Maggie insisted on either she or Claw first take it. However Sevarius' manner with the chemical raised everyone's suspicions that he was trying to poison them instead. Regardless, Maggie was still eager to use it and it took some earnest persuading by Derek to stop her from ingesting it. When the group settled into the Labyrinth, the relationship between Maggie and Derek developed into a strong one that Brooklyn, with reluctant gallantry, reinforced when he agreed to Maggie's pleas to help her stop Fang. Coldstone One of Goliath's rookery brothers. He was killed in the Viking assault in 994 but brought back to life by Xanatos and Demona as a gargoyle/Steel Clan cyborg in 1994. He was shot by Demona and fell into the icy Hudson River. His programming repaired him and he set off on a mission for Xanatos. In the process of stealing data from a military computer, he was infected by a computer virus. This virus brought out his true personality. It seems that Coldstone was constructed from the remains of three gargoyles, whose souls now inhabit his body. The virus successfully repelled, he fought an internal battle with the souls in his body, two good, one evil. He eventually left the gargoyles, fearing he was a danger to them. Coldstone was later captured by Xanatos as part of a plan of removing his conflicting personalities from him. After some trouble, the two resident personalities were removed by Puck and Alexander and placed into two android bodies called Coldsteel for the malevolent male and Coldfire for Coldstone's mate. Once in his new body, Coldsteel made his escape. Coldstone and Coldfire stated that containing him was their responsibility and took off in pursuit promising to return when they dealt with their enemy. Halcyon Renard Owner of Cyberbiotics and father of Fox. He is obsessed with integrity and demands it of his employees. This rigid moral stance served to oppose David Xanatos while alienating his wife Anastasia (the human form of Titania), Owen Burnett (the human form of Puck) and his daughter. Some months after losing his first airship to a raid by Demona and Goliath, he managed to build another one with a completely automated crew aside from himself and his assistant Preston Vogel. Facing ruin if another mishap occurred, he was understandably disturbed when he detected Goliath following the ship (to protect it from harm). He had the Gargoyle captured, and with him imprisoned, personally persuaded Goliath to accept his responsibility for the destruction that he caused. This understanding was strengthened considerably when Goliath helped save Renard's ship from being destroyed because of Fox. With that act, Renard felt that Goliath made adequate amends for his earlier actions and the two parted friends. When introduced, he was already elderly and confined to a special wheelchair, now he seems to be also seriously ill, possibly with Multiple Sclerosis. It is bad enough that he will try desperate attempts to prolong his life, such as transferring his consciousness into a Golem. Goliath persuaded him to abandon that idea as a mockery of life and Renard now feels he owes Goliath a big favor. He offered to transport the travelers home, and when they politely refused, probably gave them at least some money and a promise to tell Elisa's family about their situation. Renard later had a partial reconciliation with Xanatos for the sake of his newborn grandson, Alexander. This went so far as to him helping Xanatos resist Oberon's abduction attempt. Preston Vogel Dr. Renard's aide-de-camp. He betrayed Renard in an attempt to destroy the second air fortress, but eventually changed his mind when he learned that his boss intended to go down with the ship if he could not save it. He helped save the ship while confessing to his crime to his boss. Renard apparently forgave him and he still serves as his right hand man even though his methods are more ruthless than Renard's. He was responsible for Jackal and Hyena's attempt to destroy the Guatemalan gargoyles. Petros Xanatos A simple fisherman whose family life was turned upside down when a stranger (actually an Illuminati agent) delivered a medieval coin worth $20,000 to his son David. David took that treasure and parlayed it into an astronomical fortune, but at the price of alienating his father. Father and son rarely spoke to each other until Petros was invited to his son's wedding. The following honeymoon was a timetrip to the 10th century which inadvertently carried Petros along with Goliath and Demona. In that time period, he saw his son give the request to deliver that coin to himself in the 20th century to the resident Illuminati member. Petros was offended by this casual chicanery and snubbed David by giving him only a penny for a wedding present telling him that he might as well pull that stunt again since that money seems to be all he values. The father and son later reconciled when David battled Oberon when he was trying to abduct his son. Impressed by this show of fatherly concern, the pair reconciled with Petros satisfied that his son was changing for the better. Jeffrey Robbins A blind Vietnam veteran and author who befriended Hudson. Robbins is teaching Hudson to read, and was the one who originally pushed him to learn. Dingo / Henry Monmouth Former Australian member of The Pack. Just as much brawn, but more common sense and brains than Wolf. When the Pack was offered the chance to improve their abilities, Dingo spurned the permanent alterations the others chose in favor of power armor. He became alienated from the others because of their mutilations and eventually quit the Pack. Taking an assignment in Australia from Fox, Dingo was engaging in a Walkabout (a meditative journey) to make a fresh start to abandon his criminal past when he encountered Goliath, Elisa and Bronx. After an initial punch-up, they cooperated to stop the spread of a nanotechnological life form, known as the Matrix. Dingo was vital in this endeavor when he interested the life form in exploring law and order with him. To this end, the Matrix united with his armor to create a symbiotic relationship with Dingo. Together, they are Australia's resident superhero and, having made peace with Goliath, an ally to the clan. Griff An English Gargoyle, a subset of the species who apparently have animal-like appearances. Believed to have been wiped out by the humans, Griff's community still existed with himself and his clan posing as humans maintaining a curiosity store with the personnel in elaborate costumes. As his name suggests, he resembles a humanoid griffin and has a liking for leather apparel. His manner is lighthearted with an easygoing wit that others find charmingly disarming, but is coupled with a streak of moral certainty that makes him determined to see his goals to a proper end. During the Battle of Britain in World War II, Griff insisted on becoming involved in the fighting knowing that they would suffer certain extermination or worse at the hands of the Nazis if they prevailed. The others refused, but the appearance of Goliath, there with the aid of the Phoenix Gate, offered to accompany him. In the course of the battle, Goliath saved him from a probable death by sending him into the 1990's in order to convince the others (who thought Griff fell in the battle because of Goliath) to release Elisa, Angela and Bronx who were being held as hostages. With the reunion of the English Clan, they agreed to patrol London in the proper Gargoyle manner. Later, Griff encountered an intruder entering an old church. This intruder proved to be King Arthur, who was searching for the stone that originally held the sword that made him king. It offered a clue to the location of Excalibur, Arthur's later magic sword. A combination of the stone's power and a summoning spell of Macbeth's in New York sent the pair to that American city. There the pair, with the help of the Manhattan Gargoyle clan under Brooklyn's command, struggled for the sword with Arthur being the victor. With that matter settled, Arthur knighted Griff and together they are on a search for Merlin (with a quick long distance call to his clan to explain his absence). What progress they have made in this, is unknown at present. Taurus Security Chief of New Olympus. He is a minotaur and a descendent of the legendary one who was killed by Theseus. Diplomacy is not his strong point, but he endeavors to be fair in his work and is ready to reconsider his opinions if the facts disprove them. With his family history, he had little sympathy for humans and considered them a threat to his community's well being. That prompted him to instantly arrest Elisa when she appeared on the shores of the city when she was sent there by the Mists of Avalon along with the others. On the other hand, he was the only New Olympian who did anything to protect Elisa from a bigoted lynch mob, even if his solution was to jail her. That sense of fairness was rewarded when Elisa helped him stop the murderous shapeshifter Proteus in his attempt to destroy the city while escaping. Vinnie Gregarino Vinnie is a professional security guard with a very strange streak of luck. He has had a long series of encounters with the Gargoyles, mostly by accident. He seems whiny and weak willed, but he has a strong conscience and is capable of serious obsessions that seems to threaten him more than any of his opponents. The first incident occurred with Lexington when he was admiring the motorcycle Vinnie was riding. Upon seeing Lex, he panicked, fell off his bike and fled on foot. Lex accidently destroyed the bike and Vinnie was charged for the damage. Obviously, the presiding judge did not believe his story and stripped Vinnie of his license thinking he was drunk at the time. The next encounter was on the Cyberbiotics airship where Vinnie was a guard. Upon confronting Goliath, he fainted dead away and barely escaped the ship when crashed in the river. That event temporarily cost him his job which turned permanent when the second ship was equipment with fully automated controls and security, thus rendering him redundant. The third incident happened when he was working for Gen-U-Tech as a parking lot guard and Goliath kidnapped Dr. Sevarius literally behind his back. He was subsequently fired for that lack of attention. Finally he had enough and planned his revenge. He had a customized gun prepared and stalked the first gargoyle he found, which turned out to be Goliath. Unfortunately, he found himself worse for wear for the effort considering the battle Goliath and Hudson were having with Wolf and the spirit of Hakon. However, he finally drew a clear bead on Goliath and fired. He left satisfied with the Banana cream pie he fired splattering on Goliath's face. Later, after the Gargoyles were exposed with the destruction of the clock tower, he was quoted on television about his experience. This got him recruited as a member of the Quarrymen.. He later lost his enthusiasm after he was offered a security job in Japan, but he was still pressured to follow the leader, John Castaway, as they chased Goliath and Elisa. This lack of enthusiasm helped his conscience move him to rebel against the Quarrymen when Goliath was cornered. This allowed Goliath to defeat the Quarrymen leader and force him to retreat. He left the gargoyle's company on better terms although Goliath still couldn't remember meeting him before. As of now, he is now on his way to Japan. Given his propensity for meeting gargoyles, it will only be a matter of time before he encounters the Japanese clan. King Arthur Pendragon The legendary "Once and Future King of England". For the full backstory prior to Avalon read "Le Morte d'Arthur", or watch the film "Excalibur" At the end of that story, he was laid to rest in Avalon to be reawakened when he was needed. He has all the skills and experience of a warrior king of his time, but he still has to adjust to this century and the weight of the tremendous reputation that accompanies him constantly. During the Archmage's and Weird Sisters' attack on Avalon, Elisa revived Arthur to bolster their defense. Arthur agreed to help and thus he faced off mainly against Macbeth, whom he defeated. After the battle, Arthur decided to explore this new time on his own. He arrived in a London he barely recognized and broke into an Abbey when Griff spotted him. After a quiet confrontation, Arthur learned from the Stone of Kings (the same stone from which he pulled the sword to become King) that he must seek out his second magic sword, Excalibur, if he was to be truly King again. Both the King and the Gargoyle were drawn to New York both by the stone and a spell by Macbeth. In New York, Arthur contacted the Lady of the Lake, the Child of Oberon who gave him the sword in the earlier time. She gave him the challenge to find the mystical sword to become King again. To achieve this, he raced against Macbeth, who wanted the sword as well. In the struggle, it was Arthur who found the true sword, thus securing his birthright. Now he is on a quest to find Merlin again, accompanied by Griff as his knight. Seeing as how Merlin's father was an Incubus (thus probably a Child of Oberon), we could be seeing Arthur at the Gathering. Club Members Club Pictures
