Anime Evolution

Information
The convention that started out as a 1-day marathon of anime showings at Simon Fraser University (Burnaby BC) now has lead to a full out convention with an attendance of 5000 people! (as of 2009) This convention is young and still up'n coming please join in next time in 2010! ^^
History

[following retrieved from Anime Evolution website]
Anime Evolution started out as "Anime Showcase", a 1-day public Japanese anime showing by SFU's Altered Reality Club (ARC) in 1998. This eventually expanded into a yearly three-day run at SFU Harbour Centre with participation from other local anime clubs: The Vancouver Japanese Animation Society (VJAS), The Vancouver Sleep is for Wimps Anime Team (VSWAT), and the UBC Anime Club
SFU

Evolution
In 2002, the 3-day showcase made the leap from local campus event to a full public convention under the name of Anime Evolution (AE). Attendance grew from 300 to 1,200+(est.) as special events, vendors and industry guests were added to the video showings. The goal was to accommodate growing mainstream interest, while maintaining AE’s grassroots ties.
Stepping up
In 2008, Anime Evolution moved from its birthing ground at SFU. Due to a scheduling conflict with the university during the same weekend Anime evolution's options were either be postponed or face being canceled altogether. Luckily, through the hard work of the Anime Evolution staff, they were able to obtain the same time slot at another local university, the University of British Columbia. The convention went on without a problem and ended with total attendance for it's sixth year with just over 4,400(est.).
Primetime
2009 marked a big change for Anime Evolution. AE was held in it's biggest venue, the newly built Vancouver Convention and Expo Centre, located in downtown Vancouver taking the whole of the 1st and 3rd floors. With an attendance of 5,000 (est.) people at the convention it hit local news with its cosplayers rooming the downtown core attracting more attendance for the following year.
Vancouver Convention Center

The Return
 Resources animecons AE site wikipedia

I agree, but I liked that you could stay on site not having to go to a hotel 20 mins away. I found that it was under staffed, they kept having to change what anime was on, which was a shame, some staff didn't know how to work the equipment. (funny story I showed them how to do it saturday morning, I blew out, half the room watching clannad, when I turned the speakers on, the guy didn't know it take about 10 sec to the speakers to start working after you turn them on.) Next time i'll think i'll just go for one day pick up the cheap manga when go back home. But atleast i got to talk to the producer of dark horse comics, Carl (not in an interview room) which was very nice. We talked about the new neon gen and thier deals with clamp but I couldn't get much out of him cuass of other people who talking with him about different issues like copyright and such atleast they weren't being idiots, I can talk more if you want but I think I've done enough for now.

guys i really don't know what to say about 2010 didn't like it as much as last year that's a grantee and I'm not sure how to to put it but its was unsatisfactory. Yet what should i put into 2010? just remembering it brings back the heat to me :(. the jump from 5,000 to 6,150 was amazing i honestly thought it went down from last year having it so spread it didn't really feel like a con unless at artist villa, vendors or a panel. fyi taken from reasons for the venue change: "What about air conditioning?:
While I don't have the complete details, I DO know that a lot of buildings at UBC have been renovated, and many of them include air conditioning now. Hopefully it will include all the ones that AE is running in, but at this point I don't have that info. Fingers are crossed! "
I have never sweat so much in my life seriously for 3 days i had a lake on my back... gross

Well, that was fun. Still, I definitely preferred AE back in 2009. Back at the convention center I didn't get lost since everything was perfectly numbered and all under one roof. Plus there was working AC. What's more the stuff in the dealers room was far better and there weren't any lineups either. Another thing that seemed like a downgrade was the fact that this year half the panels were short on mics. *sigh* AE... please go back to the convention center next year.

Visited the staff table at sakuracon this year and asked about why the venue downgrade, main reason was due to the fact that the convention hall had never done a group as large as our before and were unprepared (understandable considering how long that had been open) and this year since its not a 30 days to con venue change they have been able to book rooms a bit closer to the main events. Though they are still not sure about the AC.....

I agree with kana feels like a downgrade. UBC was too spaced out IMHO, didn't know where the rose garden was then found out too late for the shoot plus it was far off. At the convention center it felt like it was suppose to be there (no duh since its a convention center) where UBC felt like we were pushed off in the corner doing our thing scrounging for what we could (which was the case due to the quick switch of venues). We had so long to book, raise and set up for the convention center this year, it waslike a neat little packaging for the con and though ideal shoot areas were limited people hardly seem to realize the park just down the hill and the one behind Canada place (a little ways off) Sad really

personally I don't mind either one, they have have their advantages/disadvantages..... but at least 2010 is going to be more organized, they have like 10 months or so... back then it was like a rush job(last second)(08)
