Japanese 101: Beginning Japanese

Information

いらっしゃいませ!! Welcome!!
This is for those interested in learning how to get started with Japanese. OBJECTIVE: To assist those interested in learning the Japanese language - while - we ourselves learn on our own. While there is no one "correct" way to learn Japanese, there are some steps that may be helpful in gettin started. If you have access to a classroom setting - like an acutal class - then please take advantage of the opportunity. NOTE: We have no teachers here. Some people may be more knowledgeable than others. At the same time, there's nothing wrong with being a n00b. After all, gotta start somehow, right? Regardless, the responsibility of learning Japanese will fall under your own jurisdiction. So, if you happen to be confused about something, we'll be able to name some people who can answer your questions. Sadly, Kyuu is not one of them. XD If you happen to be very advanced wtih Japanese, then perhaps you may be interested in the Japanese Language and Culture Group. Helpful Links: Dictionary: http://jisho.org/

My Personal approach for the very beginning was to take 1 entire week (depending on how busy you are maybe a few) to grind through the entire hiragana and katakana alphabet.

You may do this handwritten or the multiple apps out there that help you to memorise them. You may make it more fun or effective by using mnemonics (e. g. associating the shapes with something similar or familiar.) or just grind it school rote learning style.

Once you've grinded a few days from start to end of the alphabet in order, challenge yourself by scrambling/randomising the order to make the learning more effective. e. g. いえおあう instead of the usual あいうえお, the hiragana/katakana apps might have randomise built in.

I highly recommend not skipping memorising your alphabet because it will make learning the beginner content (or N5 vocab if you're one of those who like structured progress) much easier, you may forget how to write or think of the word but you will be able to read them at least.

Bonus for karaoke lovers, train reading the Japanese karaoke on YouTube or elsewhere with songs you like. Most of them should have hiragana with the occasional katakana lyrics such as in Kagamine Rin's (Kokoro) due to her robotic nature.
