Kidou Senshi Gundam ZZ

If you like Judau Ashta or Amou Shiiba as a character you'll definitely enjoy the other show's main character. Both are from similar circumstance being scrap scavengers and Amou feels like a modern rendition of Judau. On top of this both shows are action mecha with comedic moments. 

Side stories to the Amuro - Char saga. Features newtypes, cybernewtypes and Neo Zeon. Broadens the setting/worldbuilding of the Universal Century.  

Both are Tomino shows with very similar progression - they start out with a goofier tone, featuring slapstick comedy and light gags as a they follow the misadventures of a ragtag crew, but both become much more serious as the plot carries on, and the comedy elements of earlier episodes fade away 

This is so much like ZZ that it practically doesn't even register as a different show to me. ZZ Gaiden basically. The Director is Kawase Toshifumi, who worked on many episodes of ZZ as a storyboard artist and director, many Tomino-isms that he learned on ZZ carry over here, such as the use of cut-out paneling to zoom in on specific parts of the frame, action choreography sense, and character staging. Though there are still some techniques used here that set it apart from Tomino's sensibilities, like the heavy use of background animation. The Character Designer, Kobayashi Toshimitsu, was a frequent drawing director on ZZ, and the style remains largely intact. Tons of key animator crossover too. ZZ's use of lots of varied, difficult to drawn angles for the faces, heavy squash and stretch for quick motions, great mechanical drawings with high quality in-out motion are all present. The drawing style just completely exudes ZZ. The designs are perhaps a bit more warped and funny looking, but that adds to the tone Dead Heat is going for. Endou Akinori was scriptwriter for both, and there are tons of similarities in the story department as well. Very similar sense of humor, has the same basic setup of a scrappy group of kids being given experimental machinery and managing to pull through with white knuckle determination. The main character is voiced by Yao Kazuki (Judau), has a similar personality, along with a similar overall dynamic with his group of friends. Some other ZZ actors are here as well. You wont get the political or dramatic intensity in ZZ, but other than that it's remarkable how similar these shows are. I like both these shows, but even if I didn't, I would have still written this recommendation because they really do just feel like the same show and am surprised no-one else has stated the connection between them. read more 

Both Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ and Macross 7 have odd reputations, since they're both the goofier installments in their said franchises. If you're someone who was able to tolerate and enjoy one of these shows, then check out the other if you're into that series as well, who knows maybe you'll end up liking the show a lot! When it comes to these two, "watch it for yourself" is your best option.  

Somehow, Gundam ZZ (at least during the first half) really reminded me of Citrus. - Main character(s) get suddenly transferred into a new environment without their initial consent. - Characters are very emotional, to the point of being over the top. - Lot of dialogue/monologue, that the characters seem to take seriously, but I found it funny somehow. - Situational jokes, which were maybe not always meant as slapstick, but appaered to me as such. - Character actions do not quite follow reason, which is exactly what makes them amusing to watch. If you want to see some hilarious nosensical talk and action with a grin on your face, both titles may be for you. (Be warned of the 2nd half of Gundam ZZ though.) read more 

Dragonar is the first and one of the best AU Gundam's... unofficially that is! Dragonar was an attempt by Sunrise to make another franchise to surpass Gundam and well, it's obvious how that turned out but regardless it's still an excellent series on its own right. The tone is very comparable to ZZ but with more consistent storytelling and characters, with an all around more enjoyable main cast. There's also many parallels to the original Gundam. Basically if you're a classic 80's mecha fan and haven't gotten to Dragonar yet, definitely check it out.
