Both series talk about making anime and the culture that surrounds it, both series focuses on friends trying to complete his projects and leave their mark on the world and both series references important shows for japanese animation but Otaku no Video is more focused on the anime fandom while Shirobako is focused on the people that make anime.

Otaku no Video was in part inspired by Gainax's early days, and contains references to their first animated shorts: Daicon III + IV.

Both shows celebrate anime as a medium and feature the creation process of independently produced anime films.

While the stories aren't especially similar, these anime both exist as the result of a love for 70s and 80s mecha and space opera anime by the founders of studio Gainax. You can clearly see the inspiration, references, and homages to influential anime such as Macross and Mobile Suit Gundam that started the anime otaku subculture. If you are interested in that kind of stuff, you will probably appreciate both of these anime.

Documentary-style animation with live action interspersed. Lots of subtle comedy.

Both of them show the other side of anime - the process of its creation. Besides the main character in Otaku no Video and in Animation Runner Kuromi works hard to make his/her dream come true.

Both are love letters to (but also frank portraits of) otaku. Mahou Shoujo Magical Destroyers contains homages to plenty of Gainax shows, and Otaku no Video is one of Gainax's oldest gems.
