Hellsing Ultimate

There exist creatures of darkness and evil that plague the night, devouring any human unfortunate enough to be caught in their grasp. On the other side is Hellsing, an organization dedicated to destroying these supernatural forces that threaten the very existence of humanity. At its head is Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, who commands a powerful military and spends her life fighting the undead.

Integra's vast army, however, pales in comparison with her ultimate weapon: the vampire Alucard, who works against his own kind as an exterminator for Hellsing. With his new vampire servant, Seras Victoria, at his side, Alucard must battle not only monsters, but all those who stand to oppose Hellsing, be they in the guise of good or evil.

In a battle for mankind's survival, Hellsing Ultimate proves that appearances are not all they may seem, and sometimes the greatest weapon can come in the form of one's worst nightmare.

I’ve watched both adaptations of the Hellsing manga.

First, I watched the ancient mess, which lacked any character development, engaging plot, or decent visuals. I sat there stone-faced, hoping for something miraculous to surprise me, but it never happened. The first adaptation had a few successful moments, but they were scarce. In the end, viewers were served garbage and an unfinished story.

The second adaptation is far superior to its predecessor. It includes some humor to lighten the mood, and I can’t bring myself to criticize that as a bad choice. The story is simple and predictable, but it's executed far better than the old trash. The ... characters, compared to the mannequins from 2001, are much better developed. The visuals are stunning, and the sound design is high-quality.

Admittedly, Alucard is a bit overly dramatic, but I won’t dock points for that. Overall, compared to the first adaptation, it’s significantly better.

Mixed Feelings

Something seems to be missing.

At the beginning, the anime introduced several "cool" things: violence, fear, sexual content. To be honest, I really like a good 18+ plot that covers explicit content. I was also interested with the ideological battle. All those different groups fighting to put their ideology above all. It could be fun, but it was quite disappointing.

The pace is so frustrating. I like some big dialogues when the characters just start explaining their big plan, but in this anime it sounds quite boring.

Futhermore, you could feel apprehensive during the first battles, but as you see them you start realize that every single battle ... has the same ending. So I wouldn't expect much of it. You will understand more if you watch.

To summarise, I think it is a fine anime. When I started watching I just wanted to see some badass like Alucard being violent, and it satisfied me. But things really don't get much deeper, I'll probably forgot everything in 2 weeks.

In order to not start off extremely negative i will list off the things i did like about this show: the soundtrack is good and so is the action, the characters and their designs are cool (apart from seras), the overall premise is cool, the voice acting is good (again, apart from seras) specifically Alucard’s voice actor that guy really outdid himself. Now onto the actual review.

If you want to know about the story, to put it simply, there really is no story. The “story” only serves as a plot device for the gorefest and carnage to ensue. This show has nothing to say and ... you will have nothing to take away from it. It tries to at the end but it’s very superficial and you can clearly tell the author doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It’s pretty much a meathead narrative that was a chore to sit through at times.

The characters are dull, they are nothing beyond “cool”. Alucard is cool. A gun slinger with a red coat (even though we have better versions like Vash and Dante). Alucard is cool, thats it. There really is nothing else i can say about him. I feel completely indifferent about him. He is nothing more than an OP mary sue character who only exists to display his powers and win. The fact that he gets compared to Castlevanias Alucard is absurd because he is a 100 times better of a character than this Alucard could ever be.

There are no stakes in this show since the outcome is evident with how OP Alucard is. Every fight goes the same. Alucard gets fucked up (on purpose) due to him just standing there like an idiot and then we have our “oh my god” moment where he heals himself and goes berserk and kills everyone. It’s honestly just repetitive.

The side characters aren’t any better, with dull, nonsensical and nonexistent character motivations. And underdeveloped character dynamics. The main villain of the show is one of the worst villains i have seen in my life, having the most bland goal to just be another “evil for the sake of evil” villain. The only side characters i liked are Walter (even though they didnt do much with him up until the end and that in itself was an asspull) and the mercenary group leader as i found them to be the most compelling.

The tonal shifts this show goes through with its pathetic excuses for comedy should be a cardinal sin, absolutely ruining the atmosphere and overall tone of the show.

It’s really such a shame because they have all the groundwork for a really good show and they just waste that potential for it to be just another early 2000s edgy gorefest anime. The action is good, yes. But when i don’t particularly care about the overarching “plot” (or should i say the lack-thereof) i am just left in boredom with the fights. I dont really care who wins or loses. Once in a while i’ll let out a “damn” when a character does something unexpected but that’s about it. Ffs even the main villain doesn’t care if he wins or loses.

I don’t really know if i can recommend this anime. I don’t even see it as an anime. It’s more of like an AMV/edit template with cool scenes so you can edit it with music and stuff. If you’re willing to turn your brain off and go unga bunga mode then i guess you can go ahead and watch it. Don’t go in here expecting anything of value. Honestly, Hellsing would’ve been better off as a video game instead.

So to sum up Hellsing Ultimate:

“yall got good writing?”

“nah we got hype moments and aura”
