Bouken Dankichi: Hyouryuu no Maki

For a Movie barely over a Minute long, a lot sure happens, and most of it would probably be considered highly offensive and inappropriate nowadays. But this was made back in the 1930s and views and sensitivities were most likely different back then (I don't know, I wasn't there)

Honestly I was hesitant to even write a review for this, as I'm not sure what the reception for it would be (if any) but I genuinely was a little rattled by this Movie, that I thought I had to write this as a heads-up at least, as it is rather deceptive looking when first viewing the ... thumbnail on whatever media your viewing it on.

Yes there will most likely be Spoilers, but you may be thankful for them, who knows?. //Spoilers//

Just a little note, I'm only going to give an overall rating, as I don't think it fair considering the age/condition/authenticity? etc, but I'll still describe them.

Story: Dankichi and his Mouse friend head out to sea to fish for whales (what kind of rod is this kid using?!) they soon encounter a whale, which launches them into the air, the pair land on a remote island.

The pair not only survive the unexpected flight but are also hungry. Dankichi may have forgot to pack a bento, but didn't forget his bow & arrows, which he uses to shoot down some coconuts in a nearby tree. A stray arrow hits a lion sleeping near the tree, which takes off after the fleeing pair.

The escaping pair stumble upon a hut occupied by natives, who join the lion in chasing the boy and mouse.
The boy and mouse flee up a tree and somehow manage to HANG THE LION WITH AN ACTUAL NOOSE! the branch then breaks and the pair lands on a passing Elephant and start mowing down the natives, some are sent flying into the mouth of a waiting crocodile!.

The native king rushes out of the hut and is promptly beaten up by Dankichi - who is crowned the new king of the island, and everyone lived happily ever after... except all those that died.

Art: The version I saw seemed to have suffered a lot of wear and tear over the decades, sometimes the characters and background are barely visible. There is dialogue cards but their on screen very briefly (film sped up maybe?)

Sound: The sound was performed on a Piano, which is fitting for the time, although I'm not sure if it was original or added in later.

Character: How would I describe Dankichi...? a child embodiment of Genghis Khan? ...yes that fits.

Enjoyment: N/A

Overall: I not to going add much more. If you're in any way sensitive to animal cruelty and portrayals of different cultures in an unflattering way, then stay well away from this. Would I recommend this...? I guess I could recommend this to fans of historic anime and film students, as I think your average anime fan would not likely enjoy this. 2
