Tasokare Hotel

Situated within an endless twilight, the Tasogare Hotel welcomes anyone stuck between life and death. Unaware of their fate, guests must regain lost memories through mementos hidden in their designated hotel room. Most guests pass on or return to the world of living within days, while few others find themselves staying at the hotel for much longer than usual.

Neko Tsukahara, a young woman with an expressionless face, finds herself at this hotel. As she is guided along by the staff, Neko regains enough of her memories to become invested in the plights of the other guests. Solving the guests' affairs and the mystery behind the hotel turns out to be too interesting of a situation to pass up; Neko decides that simply being a guest is not enough to satisfy her curiosity.

Tasokare Hotel

I went into this anime with no knowledge of the game it’s based on, so I started with an open mind. After binging the first four episodes, here’s my initial impression.

Right off the bat, the premise reminded me of Death Parade. It shares a similar theme: a liminal space for souls to face their unresolved dilemmas and make decisions about their fate. While Death Parade leans heavily into moral dilemmas and philosophical questions, Tasokare Hotel takes a slightly more subdued approach, blending mystery with emotional storytelling.

Tasokare Hotel Is a hotel for remembering. People who arrive at the hotel do not know who they are ... at first but uncover who they are over time through clues in their hotel room "tasokare" (twilight) originates from "Who is that" (or "Who are you?")

The story centers on a girl who wakes up in a strange hotel with no memory of how she got there. It turns out this hotel is a place for souls who are unsure if they are alive or dead—a sort of purgatory where they must determine whether to move on to the afterlife or fight for another chance at life. Our protagonist, a cheerful and curious girl, essentially becomes a detective, piecing together the stories of the other guests to help them make their choice.


The episodic format introduces a variety of characters, each with unique backstories and reasons for ending up at the hotel. As their stories unfold, we see some of the supporting characters grow, revealing how they grapple with guilt, regret, or unfinished business. There’s an intriguing mix of drama, mystery, and emotional moments that keep the episodes engaging.

By episode 4, things get a bit dark and pur antagonist shows up. If you watch the show finish 4 before dropping

That said, while I find the concept fascinating, I don’t feel as hooked by Tasokare Hotel as I do with other mystery-centric anime. It might be the pacing or perhaps the emotional depth doesn’t hit as hard as it could. While the character stories are interesting, they sometimes lack the weight or complexity needed to truly captivate.

Visually, the art is fine—not stunning, but it serves the story well. There’s some thoughtful use of symbolism, which I appreciate, but nothing that left me in awe. The music, on the other hand, feels like a missed opportunity. While it’s not bad, it doesn’t elevate the emotional beats or add much to the atmosphere in the way you’d expect from a show like this.

All in all, Tasokare Hotel feels like a nice change of pace—a refreshing palate cleanser after binging way too many isekai and mediocre romance anime this season. It’s not groundbreaking, but it has enough charm and intrigue to keep me watching. I look forward to seeing how the rest of the series unfolds and whether it delves deeper into its themes. For now, it’s a solid, low-key mystery anime that’s worth checking out if you’re in the mood for something different.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (4/12 eps)

We don't get a lot of mystery anime, and when we do it's very hit or miss since it's a genre that can have good cases and bad cases mixed into the same show. Tasokare Hotel is not an exception, falls into the trap of occasionally being interesting, and then just kind of dull.

plot:
Girl named Neko spawns into purgatory, not knowing if she's alive or dead. She spots a hotel that houses the tenants that wind up here, some either being dead, or some being I don't know, in a coma I guess. Their faces get revealed once they remember who they are, ... and Neko helps solve mysteries of whether they're alive or dead. Pretty simple and intriguing plot, right? Well...as long as you do it flawlessly, with actual interesting mysteries. Which to be frank, I didn't care all too much for in this anime. It's cool trying to piece together if they're dead or not, I guess, but it doesn't really feel like the show is trying to get the audience to solve the mysteries along with Neko to me. And from what was shown so far, the reveals are kind of underwhelming.

characters:
boring as hell, it wasn't until episode 3 until they introduced a guy with some type of personality. Neko is the human equivalent of a catgirl and for being the main character, she doesn't get a whole lot of screentime. Atori is guy working at the hotel because there's nothing else to do, and he's also boring as shit. The other maid worker besides Neko, is another girl who's literally just a one-dimensional tsundere. It wasn't until episode 3 they introduced the manipulative guy, and while he's definitely the most fun character, he's also a very one dimensional "evil bad guy" archetype. He shines more in episode 4 though.

art/animation:
You can tell this is from a visual novel game series, I can't describe why, it just does. Not that it's a bad thing, the art and scenery is nice. Animation is average, but I mean, this doesn't seem like an anime that'll have much action in it anyway. This is the only anime made by Studio PRA that I've seen, not too bad for my first time.

conclusion:
Out of the two new mystery anime for Winter 2025, I lean more towards Ameku M.D: Doctor Detective, but I mean, Tasokare Hotel isn't bad either. The plot is interesting enough, plus judging by episode 4, there's going to be more stakes involved thanks to evil guy man. It's fine, not much else to say.

Tasokare Hotel had an intriguing concept, an inn where lost souls find closure before moving on, but the execution was underwhelming.

It had an interesting premise, but the execution was painfully slow and overly dramatic. The pacing dragged, making it hard to stay engaged, and the emotional moments felt forced rather than natural. The protagonist’s cat-like speech was especially grating, what was meant to be cute or quirky just came off as trying too hard. Instead of adding charm, it made the dialogue feel awkward and unnatural.

Overall, the series felt like it was stretching for emotional depth but ended up being tedious and uninspired. Definitely not ... for me.
