Class no Daikirai na Joshi to Kekkon suru Koto ni Natta.

There is only one person that high school student Saito Houjou truly cannot stand—and that is his temperamental classmate, Akane Sakuramori. The two have always been on bad terms; their contrasting views and personalities only lead to endless fighting. However, everything changes when Saito's grandfather and Akane's grandmother arrange a sudden meeting and insist that the two get married!

Walking down the aisle is the last thing Saito and Akane want, but they are quickly coerced into accepting the ridiculous plan and soon move into a shared house as husband and wife. Although Saito and Akane despise each other, navigating life together under the same roof may just turn their bitter hatred into everlasting love.

I'm Getting Married to a Girl I Hate in My Class — Love 'em or hate 'em, boy, do we sure LOVE the never-ending Nakama power of tropes and cliches. And whatever you do, don't EVER deny your true feelings.

As long as the AniManga medium has existed since the "days of dawn", there'll be the "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball" type of stories that exist to showcase its potential, yet, like "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice", the tropes and cliches that continue to see the light of day in the modern age, while getting old at best, just do not translate to the ... success that executives had hoped for in jargon. Yet, in this Winter season, that's exactly the case for novelist Seiju Amano's Class no Daikirai na Joshi to Kekkon suru Koto ni Natta. a.k.a I'm Getting Married to a Girl I Hate in My Class, which I reckon that the anime is more or less promotion for the source material, which saw the LN wrap up its final volume around the same time the show first started.

As a hardcore reader of the source material, I can guarantee you that Class no Daikirai is nothing new, especially within its rom-com mixture of genres that, genuinely, we've seen better over the past few years for similar shows that have succeeded much more. But for a reference (and especially a #throwback to the veteran AniManga fans), the show is pretty much akin to veteran novelist Yuyuko Takemiya's works of the classic Toradora! and Golden Time, if only slightly subtle as you compare its main characters of the money-loaded and venerable Saito Hojo alongside Akane Sakuramori being forced into an arranged wedlock by their grandparents of the former's grandfather Tenryu and the latter's grandmother Chiyo as their proxies. And you might be wondering: why do the elderly generation of Japanese people still want to play the game of wealth and fortune against kindled love, much less the unsolicited and bitter hate of rivals that have been at loggerheads with each other? The answer's simple: future generational wealth and reassurance.

For a start, both Saito and Akane are like ToraDora's Ryuuji Takasu and Taiga Aisaka, but even more rowdy, and the latter pretty much embraces the Tsundere culture that has riddled the anime scene since the late 2000s. Plus, with their confidantes of the former's younger cousin Shisei and the latter's best friend of gal Himari Ishikura, the entire situation between the lone guy and the 3 girls becomes more or less fractured all the more, where serious issues arise...from the genuine kindness plays out to enable the forming of yet another relationship but then becomes the one that would tarnish the reputations of their foreparents if it did happen; to just pure insanity and rioting of keeping secrets and creating jealousies between the girls to the lone guy, that he, at many points, has to step in and clear the misunderstanding for them, to the point of obnoxiousness. The sole redemption of the show (when it comes to characterization) lies especially with Shisei, because she's the cousin that, while having a serious case of brocon, her personality of just being a riot is all the more hilarious (and something that translated well into the anime, thanks to J-pop idol Dialogue+ member-cum-VA Nene Hieda's vocals that fit Shisei's character perfectly). You're going to have to witness more of a verbal (than physical) abuse of the female MC that just only wants to trigger the bad side of her forced partner, only for the latter to rebut back with the same nonchalant attitude until they calm down and talk legibly to find solutions to their rivalry. It's hard work, but redemption is even harder.

For an Aniplex project such as this, I'm even surprised that the usual studio company collab of Studio Gokumi x AXsiZ ever got off the ground, because it honestly doesn't look much different from the other shows that the sister studios have produced in the past. Sure, there is a bump in quality thanks to the big conglomerate's funding, though I'd tell you not to get your hopes high for a decent work like this one.

I'd expect music composer Arisa Okehazama to perform better, or at least admirably, though this show is not her finest work, to be frank. Even the OP/ED songs, as much as they are just idol-centric (=Love's OP) and happy-go-lucky (for the female VAs), can only do so much to create appeal for a show that has a "happily ever after" (and to be fair, the source material does hint at the awfully predictable ending). Either way, while it's catchy, it's kind of forgettable.

Alas, you can already tell if the show is for you in the first place: one being full of the tried-and-true stereotypical tricks of the trade and then getting stale quickly as to define not watching any future's worth of salvation. And I honestly don't blame you if that's what you're thinking at all. It takes one to see the appeal of the tropey cliche combo, but it takes another to just ride the wave and hope to see any good outcome(s) from it. To that I say, you'll be the judge of that.

Mixed Feelings

What a disgrace how this anime turned out. This show is running circles with no real progression happening and then it's finished off with an inconclusive ending, basically back to base 1.

In itself it was a promising anime that could've been much better easily, yet it keeps repeating the cycle of the main couple getting closer then further then closer than further etc. Whenever they are getting closer Akane snaps, gets embarassed/shy and pushes Saito away, this happens every other episode, each cycle being built around some bs trope. Worst of all is that each conflict could be solved in 2 minutes by the characters ... not bottling up all their emotions or just being less oblivious, this is the worst kind of progression roadblocks, absolutely cheap and unnecessary.

The reason it sucks the most is that the main couple is actually so charming that you just can't help but root for them (if you ignore how Akane gets shy almost all the time), it's that typical anime where you can't wait for them to get together and just feel happy for them, yet it never happens, what a waste.

As a stand alone season, it was a nothing burger. If this anime gets a 2nd season then it's more acceptable, but if we're being realistic I doubt we're getting a second season.

Have you ever had that friend who actually changed the homework they borrowed from you?
Kudos to them for the valiant effort, but here’s the thing: if they have to copy, they're probably not that bright in the first place. Sadly, Kurakon’s author is that friend who will probably get you expelled from college for aiding academic plagiarism.

The assignment is due tomorrow morning and it is already 2 am. Kurakon picked up a dusty copy of “Nisekoi” from a second-hand bookstore this afternoon. No one will remember this old show, Kurakon’s author thinks to himself. But who cares if someone does remember? He has better ... things to worry about - escaping the authoritarianism of Turnitin similarity checks. If we cannot use synonyms, why don’t we just use acronyms? Just reverse some of the settings, no one will ever find out. Instead of having the male protagonist hate the family business, we will have him love it, so much so that he is willing to become partners with his female archnemesis. The duo were a couple? Just make them marry! It was the father who forced the male protagonist. Let’s just make it his grandfather, I am sure no one will notice the subtle word change. What about the duo doing everything to act like they are partners? Just have them do everything to act like they are not partners. Turnitin can suck it up!

Hmm… The similarity index is still at 90%. The highlighted words are: “Tsundere female protagonist”, “tsundere male protagonist”, “drama between tsundere couple”, “female protagonists who are secretly in love with the male protagonist”, “female protagonists competing for the male protagonist”, and last but not least, “the duo met each other when they were children”. Alas, sunlight is pouring through the curtain and the deadline is closing in. Kurakon’s author had no choice but to leave the premise at that.

Now we have the premise. To make it less of a plagiarised work, I got to diversify my sources, thought Kurakon’s author. He put on his best cosplay of Professor Utonium and starts indiscriminately throwing shit in, an insufferable female protagonist here, some braindead behaviour there, and some more incest bait just because why not. Well, at least he kept some of the fanservice parts out. There! The similarity index is now 60%. Great work!

Although Kurakon may escape the scrutiny of the similarity checks for the time being, it certainly cannot pass the AI detection tool. In Episode 3, Akane was sick, and Saito had to take her to the hospital. Of course, being the genius he is (because the prompt says so), he chose to rush Akane on foot because that was the fastest way possible. Here, Kurakon’s author must have forgotten to prompt ChatGPT that the duo lives in the modern age, where transport tools such as taxis or emergency services like ambulances exist, even in the mystical oriental realm of Nippon. Although Saito is in a way different league in terms of sheer memory and brainpower (he could even learn an obscure language in just one night!), he just could not remember his childhood crush’s face. In a surprising turn of events that no mortal audience could have predicted (unless you are Saito (sadly Saito himself could not predict it too)), that girl was, in fact, the one he saw every day at school and grew up with. It could have been a momentary lapse on the part of Saito, but being a prodigy who remembers every detail of his newly-wedded wife’s routine when pondering the whereabouts of a missing item, it is highly unlikely that this could have happened. I think the more probable reason is that Kurakon’s author forgot to write this bit in the same conversation, causing ChatGPT to forget that Saito was, as a matter of fact, a genius.

Jokes and rants aside, “Kurakon or: How I Learned to Stop Whining and Love the Cringe” led me to reflect on the seminal question of entertainment: is the ultimate purpose of television shows to entertain? If so, is there “bad” entertainment? Is it better to have a boring show than a show with lousy entertainment? In my view, I would always take a show like Kurakon over a boring show - At least I would have the motivation to write a review about it, rather than rate it a 1 and leave it at that. If you know how the anime industry works in Japan, anime is just an advertisement. And as an advertisement, Kurakon succeeded and made a great deal of impression on me, not to mention the fact that this anime has over 100,000 members on MAL. Let’s just be honest, 10 years later, you will remember how cringeworthy The Room was, but you will not remember how boring Transformers was.
