Youkai Gakkou no Sensei Hajimemashita!

Following a bad experience teaching at a public high school that resulted in a break from working, Haruaki Abe eagerly takes up a new job at Hyakki Academy. Despite his cowardice, the novice teacher is motivated to do better this time around. However, his mind quickly changes when he finds out that everyone at the school is actually a supernatural being known as a youkai, leaving him glaringly out of place as the only human around.

Facing his class as its new homeroom teacher, Abe immediately becomes a target for the students' antics due to his quick-to-scare nature. Though as the man starts to learn more about the creatures, as well as himself, getting along with the unruly group might not be as hard as he originally thought as their school lives begin to get more vibrant.

A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! - Is this an instance of "letting the predecessor walk so that subsequent series can gain more fame and recognition"? Hmm...seems like déjà vu.

If you're thinking what I'm thinking...then yes. There is the popular series of mangaka Osamu Nishi's Mairimashita! Iruma-kun a.k.a Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, which started in March 2017, with the anime having 3 seasons and counting since Fall 2019. In fact, you might realize that this series is actually unique in that no other author has done this before. In retrospect, yes and no. While we have all come to idolize Osamu Nishi and her ... way of depicting characters of Iruma Suzuki and the yokai gang for a good 5+ years now, the reality is that her series wasn't the first to set this trailblazer going. That would, instead, go to mangaka Mai Tanaka's Youkai Gakkou no Sensei Hajimemashita! a.k.a A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School!, which actually started earlier in November 2014 and is considered to be more of an undervalued series, despite it being in the same fantasy comedy genres as the former.

Meet the human, Iruma Suzuki...erm, I'm sorry, Haruaki Abe. This menace of a young man, whose life profession is teaching, can only somehow muster the worst side of him both professionally and privately as both a timid novice teacher and a rather bad crybaby. Determined to change his cowardice around, Haruaki enlists in Hyakki Academy as a regular homeroom teacher, thinking that he'll have a better chance of peace when it comes to his teaching profession. Unfortunately, that enthusiasm diminishes when he learns that the school itself is a haven for supernatural yokais, leaving him as the only human. And despite the rowdiness of the class he's assigned to, it's where the relationship between students and teacher will change significantly of Haruaki's standing in Hyakki Academy.

At first glance, Haruaki Abe might just be the MC that we all just hate from the get-go. Because let's face it: he's a whiny coward, with the only thing going for him being his rather perverse uniform fetish that he swears by his otakudom that it's the best thing to have existed on Earth (and rightfully so). But take a closer look at him, and you'll notice something: his Japanese name is a reference to the famous Japanese onmyoji Abe no Seimei, for he is a descendant of the astrologer who can exorcise demons if it comes to the crunch that he has to save his students from imminent danger. That's as much usefulness as there is when it comes to the lone human, or otherwise the gimmick drawing on its back is his rather naive and quick-to-scare nature, which always gets in the way of not just his students, but the fellow teachers and even the Principal of the school.

The caveat, however, is that each significant student related to Haruaki, be it the close ones from the likes of Mikoto Sano and Beniko Zashiki, helps open up possibilities about their character motivations and developments that otherwise would've been glossed over if not for the goody-two-shoes character of their own teacher, who wants to see them through their struggles and overcome them together, even if it's the power of friendship tactic. This is what makes the show stand out more into Iruma-kun territory on its own merit, and by the sheer chance of making this a 2-cour instead of your usual seasonal 12/13 episodes, it wouldn't have sufficed much if the latter was the runtime given to the show to slowly showcase its appeal, and I'm largely thankful because it changed my perception as the show progressed, along with its comedy horror aspect to plentiful laughs of Haruaki and the school students and teachers.

Sadly, the production on this show is and will never be top-notch, but honestly, it doesn't really need to be. This is on par for studio Satelight's standards nowadays by doing the most minimalist of efforts given the work and the budget that's attached to it. It's decent and serviceable; that's all.

The OST...just ends up not being impressive at all. It's just there, and though at times noticeable, there was only a handful that clicked, and the rest were just out of place. I even find that the 1st Cour's OP/ED set lacks behind the 2nd Cour's, which the latter was so much better than the 1st half that we got (though Yuika's 1st Cour ED is pretty nice).

In the end, just like the manga it stems from, Youkai Gakkou no Sensei Hajimemashita! a.k.a A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School!, is a series that you go in, not expecting some new things to impress. Instead, it's rather old-school storytelling, compelling characters (that take time to develop), and lighthearted humour are the reasons why you watch the show to begin with. Take my word that the 3-episode rule does not apply to this show, and though it's a risk recommending the anime about 6 episodes in, it's a risk that duly pays off once you get through the rough patches of the first few chapters/episodes.

It's just a chill pill to see a human and a bunch of yokai do some rando nonsense together, for better or for worse.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (17/24 eps)

This anime is so hard to review. Is the animation good? No. Is the cast well fleshed-out? Also no for the most part. Is the main character a little creep with an unhealthy interest in underage girls’ wardrobe? Yes. But something about this show is very comfy and leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy inside despite all of its shortcomings.

If you’re willing to overlook his weird obsession (I know that for some it’s a dealbreaker), Seimei is a pretty easy to like character - mostly clueless but his heart is in the right place and he loves his yokai pupils dearly. The second character we ... learn the most about is Sano - Seimei’s pupil who’s kind of tsundere-ish toward him and the straight man in this comedy duo. The rest of the cast is pretty one-dimensional but they’re likable and their interactions are funny.

The show is episodic with no overarching arc (at least as of yet). In the last episode they tackled a more serious character backstory but pacing was all over the place which sadly diminished its impact. Episode premise is usually as ridiculous as you might expect from the setting. Though what you can bank on is camaraderie among classmates, Seimei’s love for his pupils and their love for Seimei, which makes me stick with this anime despite its obvious flaws.

Overall, I rate it 6/10 because it’s a flawed anime even though I enjoy it very much.

Expectations vs. Reality

As a long-time reader of the manga, I was excited when the anime adaptation was announced. Satelight, the studio handling the adaptation, has a history of producing above-average anime, so I had high hopes.

Disappointments

Voice Acting: 5/10
The protagonist’s voice acting was disappointing—too high-pitched and unnatural. In contrast, the side characters were voiced exceptionally well.

Animation Quality: 4/10
... Action and emotional scenes were poorly animated. Overall, the visuals felt rushed and lacked fluidity.

Story Adaptation: 3/10
Significant parts of the manga were skipped. Many jokes were censored, reducing the comedic impact.

Overall Execution: 4/10
The anime felt rushed and likely suffered from a low budget. Despite being 24 episodes long, it failed to do justice to the source material.

Final Verdict: 4/10
If you’re a fan of the series, stick to the manga—it’s a comedic masterpiece. Hopefully, this adaptation does not impact the manga’s continuation. I would love to see a proper re-adaptation by a different studio in the future.
