Akuyaku Reijou Level 99: Watashi wa Ura-Boss desu ga Maou dewa Arimasen

The beginning of Light Magic and the Hero, an otome RPG, unfolds fairly normally: the heroine, Alicia Ehnleit, meets her three love interests one after another and then inevitably comes face-to-face with the villainess. Yumiella Dolkness may be of noble descent, but her dark hair and rare dark-type magic—both associated with the Demon Lord—spark fear in anyone who sees her. When she is five years old, Yumiella regains memories of her previous life in modern Japan, also realizing that her fate is to become the hidden boss that appears after Alicia and her suitors defeat the Demon Lord.

Yumiella refuses to live as the game dictates and, as she prefers the game's fantasy elements over its romance, she decides to cultivate her magical skills and level up in secret. However, everything falls apart on the day of the Royal Academy's entrance ceremony. Yumiella's powers are measured at level 99—something thought impossible even for the royal knights, let alone a 15-year-old girl. With the royal family requesting her help, and everyone else insisting that she prove her strength, Yumiella realizes that her dream of a quiet life is no longer an option.

- An anime that forgot to level up
Clearly, Akuyaku Reijou Level 99 is lacking in many ways. Starting with its execution, as the animation and graphics could barely sustained the story. This might be enough in a way, since this anime is not exactly trying to deepen our existence from its visuals.

Provided that you do not have too much expectations, following this very stoic villainess to achieve her only goal (which could be resume to be as grand as being green grass or a forgotten landscape paint) could prove quite funny to some viewers, specifically in her monologues or retort answers. But honestly... that's about ... it.
Contrary to its main character, this anime could have gained from some leveling, still if you're patient enough and need something easy to follow without much intensity, I can recommend Akuyaku Reijou Level 99 since I'm feeling magnanimous.
But you might need to level up yourself afterward...

Mixed Feelings

This is just a chill slice of life/comedy-ish drama. Very hit or miss.

Good things: Yumi's fun to watch, the magic is cool (nothing special but pretty flashy), animation does it's job.

Overall, it has some wholesome themes (though very tropey) and decent execution.

The fight scenes are...okay. Like...if you enjoyed Saiki and Saitama one-shotting enemies you'd enjoy this too. There's not much else in terms of action though.

I mean, honestly this is like the many many overpowered reincarnation animes just that this one is female-led and without a harem. So yeah.

I did like Yumi and Alicia's relationship, she seems to have the most organic reaction ... to Yumi. Yumi and Patrick's cute too. Alicia and her trio of admirers less so, mainly because the 3 boys are reduced to brainless animatronics in her vicinity, bound to fawn over her and attack whoever she's interacting with without the least provocation. The show needs to understand that just because the premise is an otome isekai, doesn't mean you can write your entire secondary cast like otome characters.

More flaws: Edwin is annoying as fuck. Like I get that Yumi's terrifying, not to mention a new phenomenon to them and everything but I feel like Os and William had much more tolerable and reasonable reactions to her. I'm glad he got over it eventually but it really overstayed its welcome.

Also, the ending is...kind of cringy...but I liked that they remedied everything (unlike the other versions of this story) because I really did like Alicia quite a lot.

SO: you'll probably know if this is for you within 1-2 eps

Villainess Level 99 is the worst isekai I've ever watched in my life. And that's one hell of an achievement.

You know things immediately go wrong when you start missing the ultra-clichè otome plot they used as bait for the "antihero twist" before Episode 1 is even finished. Yumiella is possibly the blandest characters imaginable: she spends 10 years fighting trash mobs in dungeons all day everyday to reach level 99 (off-screen) and then she has no goals, no interests, no hobbies, nothing. A total void of a character. And yet, somehow, the side characters manage to turn out even more boring, stupid and irrelevant than ... her.
The worldbuilding is non-existent.
The fights are pure filler.
The political plot makes zero sense.
Every romantic scene is instantly turned into a joke.
And the poor attempts at comedy fall flat every single time.
The only fun I had watching this series was by looking at the laughably bad CGI they used for all non-human creatures.
Even trashy shows like Okaasan-online and The Misfit of Demon King Academy appear to be masterpieces in comparison, since they at least manage to be somewhat entertaining because of how ridiculous they are. Villainess Level 99 has literally zero redeeming qualities.

Final Score: 2/10.
