Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi

Salaryman Tsuyoshi Mukouda is accidentally summoned as a hero to the Kingdom of Reijseger in another world to help defend against their enemies. Wary of the royal family's true intentions, Mukouda is able to talk his way out of the situation due to his non-combat skill, "Online Supermarket," which is deemed useless.

However, this power proves to be anything but useless. With this ability, Mukouda is able to cheaply purchase food products and utensils from Japan—most of which are considered luxuries in this world. As Mukouda cooks up a storm using his ability, he catches the eye of the fearsome mythical wolf Fel. The legendary beast swiftly negotiates a contract to become Mukouda's familiar, unable to resist the delicious dishes. With Fel by his side, Mukouda travels the world, earning his keep as an adventurer and merchant all the while enjoying delectable meals.

A Japanese salaryman is reincarnated in another world, and ends up taming a ridiculously strong monster because he fed it human food. The protagonist lives a safe life, eating delicious food every day and being protected by the strongest monster, without having to worry about money. This is how the story goes on day after day. The world of the work is supported by a mysterious technology that allows the protagonist to buy modern Japanese products while in another world. The principles and mechanisms of this technology are unknown, and are not explained in the story. We just have to accept it as it is.

The ... main character has a slime companion. The main character is positive and sociable. The direction of the work is optimistic, there are no obscene jokes, and it is not an awkward atmosphere to watch with the family. The main characters' adventures are simple and there are no crises. It is a work that is just making a fuss by feeding food additives to monsters.

It is a work that is suitable for relaxing and watching at the end of the day or at dinner time. It is not suitable for those looking for a grand story or exciting content.

Mixed Feelings

I’ll start by saying that I liked the anime, but to be completely honest, I have very mixed feelings about it. As a cooking anime, it’s really a 10 out of 10, or at least that’s what I think. After all, I’m not primarily a fan of cooking anime; I watched this one because it was mixed with fantasy concepts.

I must admit that the concept of using monster meat or vegetables from other worlds is undoubtedly something that attracted me after watching Dungeon Meshi, but I want to make it clear that Tondemo left me a bit disappointed. I admit that the food looks very ... appetizing, but it treated the meat and resources of the fantasy world like any other resource from our real world. This means that the main story could have taken place in our world or in that fantasy world, and things wouldn’t have changed at all. In that sense, I feel disappointed. The anime could have taken place exactly the same if it had been set in contemporary times in our world and allied with a kanji, spirit, or god. This means that this anime doesn’t take advantage of its fantasy context at all.

I can say that the characters are pleasant, and the plots are not particularly boring. That, combined with the fact that the food looks delicious and is explained very well, makes me give this anime a score of six points. In other words, it’s okay, but it could have been much better. As far as I’m concerned, it didn’t meet expectations, mainly because I’m more of a fantasy fan than a food fan.

I recommend this anime if:
- You finished watching Dungeon Meshi but don’t expect much from another similar anime.
- You like the food or cooking genre (I think it stands out very well in that aspect).
- You like simple day-to-day plots (not self-contained).

I don’t recommend this anime if:
- You like deep fantasy: it’s very light and not well-thought-out fantasy.
- You think this anime will have good touches of adventure and action: it doesn’t.
- You like waifus: there are none.

Iniciaré diciendo que me gustó el anime, pero si soy completamente sincero, tengo sentimientos muy encontrados respecto a este. Siendo un anime de cocina, realmente es un 10 de 10, o eso es lo que creo. Después de todo, no soy principalmente fanático de los animes de cocina; este lo vi porque estaba mezclado con conceptos de fantasía.

Debo admitir que el concepto de utilizar carne de monstruos o verduras de otros mundos sin duda alguna es algo que me atraía después de ver Dungeon Meshi, pero quiero dejar en claro que Tondemo me ha dejado un poco desilusionado. Admito que la comida se ve muy apetitosa, pero trató la carne y los recursos del mundo de fantasía como cualquier otro recurso de nuestro mundo real. Lo que significa que la historia principal pudo haber ocurrido en nuestro mundo o en ese mundo de fantasía, y las cosas no hubieran cambiado nada. En ese sentido, me siento desilusionado. El anime pudo haber transcurrido exactamente igual si hubiera sido en una época contemporánea en nuestro mundo y se hubiera aliado a un kanji, espíritu o dios. Esto significa que este anime no aprovecha prácticamente en nada su contexto de fantasía.

Puedo decir que los personajes son agradables, y las tramas no son particularmente aburridas. Eso, sumado al hecho de que las comidas se ven ricas y que las explica muy bien, me hace darle un puntaje de seis puntos a este anime. O sea, está bien, pero pudo haber sido mucho mejor. En lo que a mí respecta, no alcanzó las expectativas, principalmente porque yo soy más un fanático de la fantasía que de la comida.

Recomiendo este anime si:
- Terminaste de ver Dungeon Meshi pero no esperas gran cosa de otro anime similar.
- Te gusta el género de comida o cocina (creo que se destaca muy bien en ese aspecto).
- Te gustan las tramas sencillas del día a día (no autoconclusivas).

No te recomiendo este anime si:
- Te gusta la fantasía profunda: es una fantasía ligera muy poco pensada.
- Crees que este anime tendrá buenos toques de aventura y acción: no los tiene.
- Te gustan los waifus: no hay.

Simply put, Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi a waste of time. Being a series made by Mappa, also being an isekai, I figured this was an easy watch. It was not that, it was just a cooking show with a wolf, cool. 12 episodes with 0 plot, basically the only fan service was bright colorful food, which is the best part of the show, seeing the food. It's very rare to come across an anime that refuses to have basic storytelling, but Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi pulls that off. This is the lowest effort a studio can ... give. A thoroughly disappointing series from such a reputable studio. If this is what Mappa is wasting time on, my advice to them would be this, less is more. Don't release garbage.

Animation 7/10
- The food is drawn well, the beasts are also done well, but the backgrounds can be muddy looking when they are outside.
Sound 6/10
- OP/ED are meh, SE are not great, and voice acting is just okay, nothing sound wise stands out.
Story 1/10
- This is rare for me to rate something under a 5 in any category for my scoring, but seriously, I can't in good conscience give this anything but a 1 story wise, because there is no story, this is slice of life cooking channel, and that's it.
Characters 4/10
- Another aspect of this series that just isn't remotely good. Main character has zero growth, doesn't use his abilities to their full potential, even after realizing the potential. Sui is cute, Fel is just an OP wolf, the goddesses are rarely seen or heard from.
Enjoyment 5/10
- This series had potential when it started, but then halfway into it, I was just watching it for completion. Like a lot of series in winter 2023, they had potential, and then became a fart in the wind.

I can't recommend this to anyone. If you like drawn food, go play Final Fantasy 15. Then again Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi is on par with FF15 in its trashiness, so maybe that's not a good idea. Either way, stay away from this waste of time, there are so much anime out there.
