Ore dake Level Up na Ken

Humanity was caught at a precipice a decade ago when the first gates—portals linked with other dimensions that harbor monsters immune to conventional weaponry—emerged around the world. Alongside the appearance of the gates, various humans were transformed into hunters and bestowed superhuman abilities. Responsible for entering the gates and clearing the dungeons within, many hunters chose to form guilds to secure their livelihoods.

Sung Jin-Woo is an E-rank hunter dubbed as the weakest hunter of all mankind. While exploring a supposedly safe dungeon, he and his party encounter an unusual tunnel leading to a deeper area. Enticed by the prospect of treasure, the group presses forward, only to be confronted with horrors beyond their imagination. Miraculously, Jin-Woo survives the incident and soon finds that he now has access to an interface visible only to him. This mysterious system promises him the power he has long dreamed of—but everything comes at a price.

Season 1 of Solo Leveling does an outstanding job of building a relatable fantasy world. While not every aspect of its reality is openly explained, pertinent pieces of information are provided as we follow Jin-Woo who is often questioning and analyzing his findings - an approach that goes nicely with the theme of reaching new heights as you deal with what life throws your way.

The main character’s understanding of controlled risk leads to appropriate payoff as the plot progresses without leaving out the fact that mistakes will occur even at times people feel most prepared.

As far as the premise goes, I would argue that ... Jin-Woo’s character arc remains on brand while being brilliantly laid out. The one thing you can’t solo however is character development and this too comes at a price given how interesting different characters (and aspects of the world itself) are presented but kept on the sidelines.

Nevertheless, Solo Leveling leaves major contributions to a genre filled with titles that often seem to have storytelling as an afterthought. Delving deeper into how the franchise has been produced throughout the years is also a treat as the end product leaves nothing to be desired.

Mixed Feelings

I really tried to love Solo Leveling Season 1, but it wasn’t really my thing. I know a lot of people love it, but for me, it felt like a baseball team that has all the best players but somehow still loses the game. Let’s start with the biggest problem: the story is way too predictable. It’s like watching a team that only ever hits home runs—cool at first, but after a while, it gets boring. Sung Jin-Woo never really struggles after the first few episodes. He just keeps leveling up and destroying everything in his path. Sure, it looks cool, but where’s the tension? ... Where’s the challenge? In baseball, the best moments come from close games, where you don’t know who’s going to win. This anime felt like watching a blowout where the other team doesn’t even have a chance.

The Side characters also barely matter at all. It's like watching the dodgers and only Shohei is pitching and batting (WHICH WOULD STILL BE AWESOME). Jin-woo is the only one who ever does anything important. It's like the show exists only for him and him alone. It almost feels insulting how some of these side characters are treated.

The animation of this show really makes it feel like the Pittsburgh Pirates of anime. Amazing visuals (stadium), but watching it is miserable (bad team). The music was pretty forgettable too.

You know, when watching this show I really wanted to really have a lot of really good fun. But really it was a real bore. The real-life setting of this world was really boring. I really wished that the characters were interesting. I really wished the story was cool. I really wanted to have fun. But really, this really shouldn't be for anyone. For real. 4/10

I've never seen such a boring anime. The hero goes through the opposite path of development. From an interesting, emotionally torn young boy to a pillar of salt, without any character traits or emotions. The script puts him in situations where he has to fight for his life to increase his level (sic!) but without any other emotional stakes and a higher goal, the viewer cares emotionally so much about that as about car passing by outside the window. There is also an idiotic system that pushes him in some direction. The only interesting thing in this anime... so it is rudimentary and not addressed ... at all, good idea. The technical side is solid, but the fights are a bit too chaotic, they are cool because they are supposed to be cool, not because they have a deeper bottom and structure or stakes. You can watch it "to the chop" to completely lose your brain, but it's still a waste of time. The community rating is a tasteless joke
