Bucchigire!

Following a ruthless attack from an imperialist criminal gang known as the Masked Demons, Shinsengumi's Eighth Division—the law-enforcing squad in Kyoto that remains faithful to the shogunate—is nearly annihilated, with its sole survivor, Heisuke Toudou, critically injured. Urged to rebuild the Shinsengumi by the local feudal lord, Katamori Matsudaira, Toudou decides to offer eight convicts the chance to redeem themselves: they must abandon their old names and become substitutes for the eight Shinsengumi captains. All accept but one, who ends up immediately executed by the former assassin Sakuya.

However, Toudou has a hard time transforming the seven reformed criminals into loyal servants. Due to his lack of discipline, the impulsive and vengeful Ichibanboshi, whose family perished at the hands of the Masked Demons, threatens the success of Toudou's strategy. As Toudou pledges to protect the shogunate against imperialists and foreign invaders, other factions, such as Kogorou Katsura's group, start to put their plans in motion with only one goal in mind—to seize power at the dusk of the Edo period.

Preliminary (7/12 eps)

I was surprised to see that this anime has such a low score.
I will start with the positives: I really love the art style and the animation. Amazing work by the studio. The story is decent and relatively well told. The characters are pretty interesting, although I will say that some of the secondary protagonists are better written than the MC. The music is also a standout for me. It gave me naruto vibes, some shamisen scores made me think of mashiro no oto, sothe music is very japanese traditional, and I personally like that.
Now for the negatives: it feels shallow sometimes, a little ... too generic, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I can see why some people might not like it. I stand by my general opinion that an anime doesn't have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to its genre. It just has to be well made, and up until now I think it gets the job done. The villain is the one that feels most generic of all and tbf, I saw the plot twist reveal from miles away. I am expecting more backstory in the future however.
A side note I wanted to make is that they straight up ripped the design of 2 characters in this show: one protagonist and one pretty unremarkable side character. The design for Sakuya looks very much like Xiao from Genshin Impact and the design for the criminal killed by Sakuya when he refused to join the group in the first episode (forgot his name, too lazy to look it up) looks waaaaay too much like Luchist from Shaman King. And I have a feeling other characters in the show look a lot like characters from other anime I'm not familiar with.
But overall, this anime is pretty good, especially as a week by week watch. I would recommend, since it's an easy watch and a decent anime overall

Mixed Feelings

This show introduces a cast of genuinely interesting characters but unfortunately does not have the narrative power to effectively make the most out of them. There are some plus sides to Bucchigire! besides the banger opening and ending songs. First and foremost is the colourful and vibrant cast of characters, not just regarding their personality but literally too. Each of the characters have generally a great design with each of the main cast themed after a colour. They also deal with combat in their own unique way, which sets up a lot of potential for combat scenes which unfortunately were not executed in the best ... manner. Additionally, the art-style is one I actually quite enjoy, it definitely isn't for most people, but I really think it stands out among the rest of the anime this season.

Unfortunately that's just about where the show stops being amazing. The show simply has a fantastic set of ingredients but fails to make use of the potential at its disposal. Bucchigire! tells the story of a cast of criminals being recruited into a samurai clan instead of facing punishment for their crimes. The premise is interesting, the unique interactions between the characters are charming, but the over-arching narrative is poor, and despite the art-style and character designs being quite enjoyable, the animation itself falls flat. I found myself most disengaged in the show when the fight scenes were actually occurring, I just wanted to know more of these characters, and the glimpse of what could have been from this show was brighter than the final product.

Although personally I gave this show a 7, I feel it truly lies at a 6.5, its definitely not a BAD show, just not a particularly special one, but definitely not a boring watch.

Not Recommended

Let me save 4 hours of your life by telling you to not watch this anime. Nothing is consistent, plot is weak, barely any character development, we didn’t need that love interest at all. The last episode was by far the worst episode, the only reason I finished watching this anime was to get rid of it from both my on hold and watching.

Furthermore, I absolutely hated the flash backs, not only were they tacky and uninteresting, they were also constantly repeated and the borders of my screen looked like crappy water colors mixed together.

The main power ranger characters felt like a copy of ... the Hashira from demon slayer only if the Hashira were a bunch of weirdos. Pink hair and Blue hair were probably the only characters I felt half interested in but not interested enough to learn their names.
