Synopsis

Born from the creativity of Amanda's luminous mind, Rudger is an imaginary friend that she alone can hear or see. Together, they go on wild adventures in the attic above the bookshop owned by Amanda's mother. The two have pledged to follow three rules: never disappear, always protect one another, and never cry.

One day, a suspicious man named Mr. Bunting knocks on the door, accompanied by an eerie girl that only Rudger and Amanda can see. He has a keen nose for hunting imaginary friends and depriving children of their precious companions.

During one of Mr. Bunting's failed attempts to capture Rudger, Amanda gets into a fatal car accident. All alone now, Rudger must protect himself from not only his pursuer but also another peril: if an imaginary friend is forgotten, they will completely disappear from existence.

Not much to say about it, I really enjoyed the movie, the animation was good, the characters were cute, not annoying at all, the artstyle very beautiful... All in all, I would give it a 7.5 as it was a nice, pure, sentsentimental, fantasy - adventure story of 1hr and 40mins long, that reminds me many other anime and movies. So I would recommend it for the whole family and I would say somehow similar to -

I was really surprised by this one. It starts off kind of childish - and it is a film made for kids - but there's a surprising depth to this film that you don't see until later. Multifaceted characters, an excellently paced and written plot, and a message that reaches both kids and adults. The stakes feel real. The highs are soaring and the lows will have you genuinely fearing for the characters, and there are points where I had no clue what was going to happen next. I was crying by the end. It really is a special film.

And of course, the visuals ...

Studio Ponoc has thus far remained in the shadow of Studio Ghibli, with the founder of the former, Yoshiaki Nishimura, having been a long time staff member of the latter. Mary and the Witch's Flower (MatWF), their first feature length film, was constantly deemed ersatz-Ghibli by critics, and even the art books and merchandise were equivalent in design, representing their heftiest profit. Rudger is, in comparison, overlooked and struggling to find an audience amongst Japanese or foreigners. It seems to be something of a flop, probably most enjoying an audience more inclined to something like Pixarified Ghibli or a mild harkening to the darker days ...
