Overlord Movie 3: Sei Oukoku-hen

Hello, first of all, thank you for continuing to make this wonderful series and don't get tired of it. As a fan, I ask you to continue the work because this work has a lot of potential, like the One Piece series. It has a lot of maps, different creatures, and details like a light novel. Don't take anything away from it, even if it takes a little longer.Because the most important thing in this work is the detailed story part. By removing them, the sales and appeal of the work will decrease, like the third season of the series That Time I Got Reincarnated ... as a Slime, which was not interesting.

This movie isn’t great, but it’s not a total dumpster fire. At least it gives the fandom something new. I won’t waste time on the “good” parts because others have already kissed its ass enough, especially that “Nea” chick. Her over the top glaze is a whole other issue which we'll talk about below.

Now, the bad? Let’s start with the characters. The movie shoves a gangbang of new faces we’ve never seen in the anime. One or two? Fine, I guess.

But a metric ton of strangers crammed into a single flick? NO. We barely know who or what exactly their backgrounds are! So what's ... the point?! "But but but they are crucial for the plot, it's a movie they can't have that much time to bla bla bla" That's exactly why you SHOULD NOT cram all of them in one MOVIE.

If they wanted to add this many, they should’ve sprinkled them into the anime, just like how they introduced the characters in Season 2, both for the NPC in Nazarick or for other side characters. Or... Maybe put it in Season 5 or whatever. But nope, they just dump it all here.

As I was saying, since it was too abrupt, the new characters are flatter than a soda left open overnight. Take the paladin girl for example, every time someone talks to her, she’s one step away from blowing up like a firework. Sure, that’s her “thing,” but it’s grating as hell. Imagine a Karen with a superiority complex and a fuse shorter than a toddler’s temper, throwing a tantrum every single goddamn time. Yeah, that’s her.

And don’t get me started on the “tragic” backstory of Meteor Lady Jr. We got three whole episodes' worth of screen time focused on some random ass girl whose father got obliterated by a big ass meteor from Ainz’s subordinate (The goat demiurge). And because of that we had to sit there watching her one sidedly glaze Ainz just because he was doing this and that. It wasn’t even funny, it was annoying. Yeah, yeah, I get it, he’s badass. But did they really have to waste so much time on this random chick screaming "OMG OMG OMG MY HERO MY SAVIOR AINZ SAMAAAAAA"? Isn’t Enri enough ffs?!

Enri already did the “I’m so loyal to the skeleton man” shtick for TWO whole season, Season one and three.

Ngl, this feels like lazy recycling.

Then there’s the OG Nazarick NPCs. They’re treated like background props. “Oh, this is Jack. You know him... Moving on to the star of the show… Ena Eini, Baja or whatever tf her name is.” WTF? Demiurge, the supposed main villain, gets sidelined for some summoned monster stand in. Cool, I guess, but I wanted to see HIM! His schemes, his plans, the supposed tension with Ainz.

The thing is, the anime only hinted at his moves, so I thought the movie would dive deep. First 10 minutes had me hyped… then they dropped the ball harder than when I cracked my skull open as a kid.

And what’s with the action scenes? They’re flashy but hollow. Ainz’s power is supposed to be god tier, but here it’s just “meteor spam + fireballll + Bzzz bzzz bzzz oooh cool lightning + Now they are lights flying in the sky + dramatic pose = win.” Where’s the creativity? The anime at least made his tactics feel calculated. This just feels like a Michael Bay explosion fetish.

The worst part? As I was saying, the movie had one job, at least what it could've been in my opinion, which is to give fans a deeper look at Nazarick’s inner circle. Instead, it jerks off a new character while OGs like Cocytus, Elven Twins and Albedo get crumbs. Albedo’s literally the Overlord’s number one waifu ffs, give her something to do besides lurking in the background! And don’t even get me started on Shalltear’s wasted potential. She literally got overshadowed by Enri lmao, my poor lich vampire.

I get it... Ainz is cool. But do we need an entire subplot worshiping him? We already enough of that from season 1 to 4. This movie had potential to flesh out Nazarick’s inner circle but chose to jerk off a new character instead. Disappointing.

TL;DR: Too many newbies, shallow writing, OGs ignored. Could’ve been a treat for fans but settled for half baked filler with extra cheese. 5 or maybe 6 out of 10... For now... Average 5. At least I could watch Overlord again, I guess.

It was genuinely just okay.

Visually, it's very good. It also does the Overlord political maneuvering and manipulation as well as the rest of the series. But it felt like it was too crammed into one long run to adequately cover the whole arc.

Major fights upon which the plot hinges are over in an instant when they should have lasted longer (It was supposed to be staged to make it look like a difficult match up for Ainz) and worse yet they happen far off in the distance so you don't even get to enjoy the action and animation together like a regular fight. It's just ... a couple of colored streaks through the sky and some flashing lights for a minute or so and then a winner is declared.

But that's not even the biggest complaint. Half the new characters felt so under-cooked that it made it hard for me to care what was going on. The paladin lady - Remedios - was probably the worst. She was incredibly irritating, and had the potential for a whole mental breakdown arc over the events of the story that could have played out well.... if this were a full season of anime. Unfortunately, a lot of the supporting backstory needed for this is completely omitted. She has no reason for her position, her obsession, nor her drive and it all feels lackluster. Any really compelling moments she could have had throughout the story were either cut entirely or stunted by terrible decisions in directing.

Nea Baraha was a decently compelling character, but came off more like a fangirl with how fast she develops her respect for Ainz. Given more time, she too could have been a much better character. It wasn't like I hated her, but she suffered the same effect as Remedios because of the cramming - her writing felt robbed of potency.

And all that while the story crams what feels like a lengthy campaign into about 2 hours and 20 minutes, cutting corners in every way it can to reach a conclusion within that time frame, and awkwardly interrupting the story with the whole advertisement for rune technology in a way that wasn't funny or even super important to the plot.

Wait until you can watch it from home, get some alcohol, and enjoy. You'll have a better time than I did driving 40 minutes to the nearest showing at 9:30 on a Sunday night.
