Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai!

The great Jahy will not be defeated! Simultaneously combating starvation, the lack of A/C, and the unavoidable weakness of turning child-sized, Jahy—previously the second strongest being in the Dark Realm—is under great stress. If it weren't for the destruction of the mana crystal which used to power the Dark Realm, Jahy would still be living a life of power and luxury.

And yet, at the moment, brawling with the landlady over rent is a recurring event for Jahy. Just to have a place to stay and food to eat, Jahy must work part-time. However, her immense pride will not allow her to live under such poor conditions for any longer than necessary. Vowing to reinstate the Dark Realm to its former glory, Jahy continues her journey to reassemble the mana crystal.

Who could say no to this adorable demon girl!!!
This sat on my must-watch list for a few years, and I finally started it LAST year. I like demon-lord reincarnated comedy shows I suppose. And the first cour/season 12 episodes of Great Jahy did not disappoint. There were some moments in this that were so funny I laughed myself hoarse, and cried.
It's sort of similar to the Level 1 Demon Lord One Room Hero anime of a couple seasons ago; she was "2nd in command" of the Dark Realm, and ends up somehow in our world, but lives in a 'one room' apartment and has no ... money. Jahy's goal is to try and make some money and search for 'mana crystals' so she can accumulate enough of them to return to the Dark Realm.
Her efforts are in vain; and she ends up having to work part time at a restaurant. She doesn't have enough power to maintain her adult form; so she alternates between being a little girl (with just that t-shirt on) and a busty woman with kind of bikini attire and boots (well the proprietor lady at the restaurant gets her some normal clothes) She works herself half to death, and finally finds a single mana crystal and thinks she is on top of the world.

My favorite parts of this show were the 2 minute vignettes at the end where Jahy explains some of her cost-saving hacks- like how to make bean sprouts with all these different flavor packets that are 20 cents different in price- if you were a struggling college graduate, or know what it was like to be one, you'll relate to all these scenes and it's comedy gold. Jahy has a heart of gold. You just want to see her be happy.

If I could have rated just the first season, I would have given it 9 or 10 it was so good. But then the 2nd half really takes a nosedive. I barely recognized the show by the end; Jahy is still the center of everything that happens; but the jokes just aren't as good, the situations aren't as desperate, and I said in my episode review that with comedy if the joke overstays its welcome- it becomes long in the tooth. They didn't even do the little vignettes at the end anymore. The anime lost the kind of Riches-to-Rags feeling it had going on in the first half. It dragged so bad from episode 13-18 that I sort of dropped it; and didn't pick it up again til a couple weeks ago. I just wasn't motivated to watch it anymore. There are some good things that happen- after Jahy meets Kokoro, a little girl that thinks she's actually a child like her (this is all VERY funny at first) she eventually fights the magical girl, gets help from her landlady etc but it just isn't as FUNNY. And if a comedy isn't funny anymore- that's game over.
It isn't all bad news- The character Suarva remains funny throughout- apart from Jahy she was my favorite character; and the voice acting in this English dub is excellent and the person who plays her as Chibi-Jahy REALLY SELLS IT even when the script itself isn't as tight as it was in the first half.
But the way it drops off in the 2nd half just drags the show down, and I can't say it's really a great show anymore. So if you watch this, watch 1-12, it will make you laugh very hard. There isn't much reason to watch the rest. It's sort of like with comedians, they can only be on stage for a limited time- stay too long and you tire of the jokes. It gets long in the tooth... and seeing her fangs in that cover picture makes that actually kind of a funny joke in itself haha- 7/10

Mixed Feelings

"It even seems like it's from another world"

It's confusing the way this anime works, things that should please you doesn't, and such non important things impresses.

The best way to describe it are the jokes; most of the jokes are beyond obvious and have silly punchlines and such a weird time, sometimes the characters don't react the joke for a few seconds and by the time you already realized the outcome and ends being so dull when finally happens, and then out of nowhere you see a unexpected reaction from a character and caught yourself laughing without noticing; it's something that makes you perplexed to the ... point of questioning if there is some hidden geniality here you are not able to see, and the characters makes you even more perplexed.

The best characters are those who less shows, The "Demon King" appears about five times, but leaves a strong impression, without speaking a word, while "Jahy", annoys and does not pays off the attention it deserves; and it's not about her personality, her presence on the show is wasted by a lot of scenes that add nothing; it's not a excuse to serve as comic relief just for being a comedy, Kyoko ( The Magic Girl) shows much less but has such a good arc because her personality reflects on jokes and situations, and that makes her impression more concrete. On the design departament doesn't have much to be criticized, they are very unique and manifest purpose, like how all humans have such a generic design to fit on the ordinary, and other from the other world are clearly fancy.

A different point of view will be comparing this anime with ""Shinryaku! Ika Musume" who shares a similar premisse, and brings two unpleasant protagonists, and between the two you can understand what ""Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai!" fails that "Shinryaku! Ika Musume" delivers; the way the protagonist adapt herself at the ambient more naturally, her personal growth matching with the learning time, emotions and humor on the right amount at the right time. It misses essential elements to be considered a good show, but it's still a unique experience to see.

"Até parece de outro mundo."

É muito confuso o jeito que esse anime funciona, as coisas que deveriam te agradar não agrada, e os detalhes mais insignificantes te impressiona.

O melhor elemento para ilustrar esse ponto são as piadas; a maioria das piadas são obvias com trocadilhos bobos, e tem um tempo tão estranho, as vezes os personagens ficam vários segundos sem reagir durante a piada e nesse tempo você já entendeu o desfecho e perde a graça quando finalmente acontece, e de repente logo em seguida o personagem tem uma reação inusitada e risos sai de sua boca sem você menos perceber; é algo que te deixa realmente perplexo ao ponto de se perguntar se há alguma genialidade aqui que você não é capaz de enxergar, e os personagens te deixa ainda mais perplexo.

Os melhores personagens são aqueles que menos aparecem, O Rei Demônio aparece em basicamente 5 cenas, mas deixa uma impressão forte, sem nem mesmo falar uma palavra, enquanto Jahy, irrita e não faz jus ao seu destaque; e isso não é sobre a sua personalidade. Sua presença na série é bastante desperdiçada em cenas que não agregam nada; não é desculpa por ser uma comédia que tenha que tratar como alívio cômico, Kyoko ( A garota mágica) aparece bem menos mas seu arco é muito mais safistatório porque as piadas e situações refletem a sua personalidade, e isso faz com que se tenha uma visão bem mais concreta sobre ela. No quesito design não há muitas críticas a serem feitas, são bem únicos e demonstra propósito, como os humanos tendo um design mais simples e genérico e representam normalidade, e os que são de outro mundo claramente sendo bem extravagantes.

Um ponto diferente, vai ser comparar esse anime com "Shinryaku! Ika Musume" que compartilham uma premissa bem semelhante, e trazem dois protagonistas antipáticos, e entre os dois você consegue entender oque "Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai!" falta que "Shinryaku! Ika Musume" entrega; A forma como a protagonista se adapta e reage ao ambiente mais naturalmente, o amadurecimento que condiz com o tempo de aprendizado, as emoções e humor no seu tempo ideal. Faltou elementos essenciais para um ser considerado um bom show, mas ainda vale experienciar pela sua peculiaridade.

The powerful right-hand of the dark lord is forced to exist powerless and impoverished in modern society when a magical girl shatters the dimension she resides in, separating her from her powers and her enviable social status. After losing her powers her form periodically reverts to that of a child and she must come to terms with working for a meager living wage and accepting the handouts and generosity of others while trying to restore her power.

Thematically a slice-of-life comedy, Jahy is a tonal mess of a show and its lead character may be called a gross miscast for the sort of playful karmic retribution ... that occurs throughout the anime. The premise of the show is that a cartoonishly evil character must succumb to living a life of borderline poverty in the modern world, but the 'comeuppance' is never severe or equal to how evil she was previously, and the anime goes as far as to show the extent of her decadent lifestyle and sinful actions, such as annihilating her own subordinate over something forgettable and petty.

What's more is that this context of characterization is supplied fairly early on in this anime, and so there is an inherent thematic clash with the mostly easy-come-easy-go, goofy, and happy tonality that is maintained throughout the show, as the lead character never experiences a comparable challenge for her life prior to entering the human realm. Instead, the stilted presentation disguises the lead character's villainy as a loli-gyaru to invoke a sense of sympathy and cuteness in her shenanigans, and to perhaps expand the target-demographic to a more niche audience, but this can only be described as tasteless.

The animation is fine and then declines to poor by the finale. The writing is fine and sometimes boring; the show is largely episodic, periodically introducing another cast member as it goes on. Many of the characters introduced are low in their dimensionality, making for a predictable and listless experience when they usually appear.

I do not recommend this anime. You are almost certainly not getting entertainment value comparable to the 20-episode investment of time you would be making.
