Both satisfy the fans and are made by Gainax. End of Evangelion continues where the TV series left off whereas The Lights in the Sky are Stars is a recap but with added scenes. They both end the production of the series in a high note of their recent era after their air.

Both take place after some point in the series with advanced civilization and military against the invasion from sentient beings that are impossible to defeat. The protagonists must face struggles mentally and physically throughout the plot and serves as the key to defeating the enemy. They both end the series with their respective conclusions.

Epic conclusions to iconic mecha series that have made history, with great themes, beautiful animation and mind-blowing final fight with unexpected scale.

Gurren Lagann takes direct inspiration from the Getter Robo saga, the similarities are uncanny, down right to the color scheme of the mechs. The stories are similar about humanity struggling to survive a post-apocalyptic world and the characters like Ryoma Nagare and Hayato Jin were a big inspiration for Rossiu and Simon/Kamina. Shin Getter Robo is a must see for any Gurren Lagann fan

Both well put together retellings of action packed series. Nanoha is more manly though.

Both are summary movies from your respective TV series (Gurren Lagann and Macross). Both Add new scenes or new animation, improving the show. Finally, both are highly recommended to watch, mainly if you like mechas and huge battles.
