Hataraku Saibou Black is the much darker version of Hataraku Saibou as it's about cells in an unhealthy body dealing with alcohol and stds etc.

Kaiji And Hataraku Saibou Black are strangely similar in a way that the both of them perfectly grasp the seinen spirit. The two shows can be described in one word and that is; raw. While in one hand Kaiji tells about debt and addiction meanwhile having an extremely dense and stressing atmosphere for all of the show. On the other hand, code black is a visualization of an unhealthy body in which the cells who are portrayed as characters and try desperately to work their best in the decaying body they're stuck in. Both shows are about SCIENCE and anthropomorphize cells - cells of the human body in Cells at Work Black and rice fermentation cells in Moyashimon. Moyashimon is more light hearted than the Cells at Work spinoff, but still puts the main characters into adult situations, which is why I think Moyashimon is more similar to the spinoff than the original Cells at Work.

-Both shows explore the dreaded "Black Company" - Japanese workplaces exemplified by excessive overtime and power harrassment. -Both shows use monsters and fantasy as metaphors for the current workplace culture in Japan. The main difference, other than aesthetics, is that the main character for "Cells at Work: Code Black" is largely seen as a sympathetic, naive victim throughout the story. He starts out a naive, optimistic worker who attempts to work hard to improve the workplace conditions, only to slowly get burnt out and depressed from overworking. The main character of "Dungeon Black Company" starts out as successful NEET, becomes a victim to workplace exploitation, and  read more

Same director, same feel of "dark" dramatization of otherwise mundane dialogs, events, and facial expressions.

Aggretsuko and Cells at Work! CODE BLACK! shows us what can happen when you work in a toxic environment. They might be in completely different work environments, but Retsuko and Red Blood Cell AA2153 are hard workers who can't seem to catch a break (and might even be punished for their efforts). You might think that Retsuko can solve her problems with a better job, but no such luck for Red Blood Cell AA2153. Who has it better? Who has it worst? You decide.
