Synopsis

The Mutou family leads a peaceful life: Kouichirou works at a construction site and his wife Mari is returning from an overseas trip. Their daughter Ayumu has just finished her track practice while their son Gou is playing video games at home. However, life as they know it is flipped upside down when a calamitous earthquake strikes the entire Japanese archipelago—obliterating the face of the country in an instant.

With society crumbling around them and their nation gradually sinking into the ocean, the Mutou family must band together to survive the catastrophe. Treading the near-apocalyptic setting, they struggle not only to stay alive, but also to learn the difficulty of coping with loss.

Reviews

Good anime, quite well adapted to the today's time. My guess for the low reviews is due to the audience being to young and not fare well with "loss" and very adult themes in general. Which is something you will be experience a lot in this anime, sometimes it will be very brutal... and gory hence why I think the artistic direction for this anime fits... here's why:

Artistic direction, although is not your tipical bright Anime show, it actually fits the Anime mood very well. Has the show isn't exactly your happy go lucky show and things don't go the way you expect most ...

Mixed Feelings
Weird anime. The way that characters just die left and right and everyone just moves on, seemed strange to say the least. All the while Ayanami just loses her marbles on occasion. KITE being a walking and talking deus-ex-machina of sorts also wasn't particularly appealing. The rest of the characters are closely defined, with a few interloping sub-plots that felt unnecessary. Many characters felt outright superfluous. Overall, its compelling plot, but executed in a somewhat unconventional (and not very believable) way. The visuals are interesting, and somewhat compensate the cons of this work.

Im usually a big fan of disaster movies and also anime. ...

Note - I mark this as Not Recommended because I do actually believe "Most review readers will not like this", but the review is still aimed at drawing in those who might still like this particular Anime. There's also some mention of differences from Japan Sinks, the 1970s novel this Anime is adapted towards, but they're not spoilers for the work -- more of things I felt were important to know going into this.

I love B-level disaster movies/series like Japan Sinks 2020, yet I suspect this does not hold true for most individuals. In contrast, A-level disaster movies/series are far more likely to be well-received, ...
