Violet Evergarden Gaiden: Eien to Jidou Shuki Ningyou

Isabella, the daughter of the noble York family, is enrolled in an all-girls academy to be groomed into a dame worthy of nobility. However, she has given up on her future, seeing the prestigious school as nothing more than a prison from the outside world. Her family notices her struggling in her lessons and decides to hire Violet Evergarden to personally tutor her under the guise of a handmaiden.

At first, Isabella treats Violet coldly. Violet seems to be able to do everything perfectly, leading Isabella to assume that she was born with a silver spoon. After some time together, Isabella begins to realize that Violet has had her own struggles and starts to open up to her. Isabella soon reveals that she has lost contact with her beloved younger sister, Taylor Bartlett, whom she yearns to see again.

Having experienced the power of words through her past clientele, Violet asks if Isabella wishes to write a letter to Taylor. Will Violet be able to help Isabella convey her feelings to her long-lost sister?

This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen

Plot Summary: This story illustrates another chapter of Violet's journey during her time as an Auto Memory Doll. Isabella is a noblewoman who has been enrolled in an all-girls academy to be groomed into a dame worthy of nobility. However, despite her privileged position, Isabella feels trapped by the expectations and constraints placed on her by her family, and the emotional turmoil has left her feeling isolated. Her family notices her struggling in her lessons and decides to hire Violet Evergarden to personally tutor her under the guise of a handmaiden. During their first ... few days or weeks together, Isabelle treats Violet coldly, judging her perfect mannerisms as an outcome of being born with a silver spoon. However, as they spend more time together, Isabelle realizes Violet has had her own struggles, which leads to Isabelle opening up to her. As Violet helps Isabella express her emotions through letters, the story delves into themes of freedom, duty, and self-discovery. Isabella is caught between her personal desires and the expectations of her family, and Violet's involvement in her emotional journey leads both characters to greater understanding and growth.

Characters:
Isabella York: She is the central character in the film. Isabella's story is one of inner conflict, as she faces the pressures of an arranged marriage and the desire for freedom. She's initially shown as cold and a little annoying towards Violet; however, it made her emotional growth look huge in the end, and I love how her self-discovery was explored through the communication of letters.
Violet Evergarden: The relationship between Violet and Isabelle was interesting in the movie as it had a very slight Yuri taste to it. They look similar in age, so I'm glad they had the chance to talk and learn about similar topics from their perspective. I know Violet was still searching for the meaning of the word "love," and it was a great opportunity here.
Supporting Characters: Although we didn't see them as often, I was really happy when they showed up on screen. Benedict always makes me happy.

Animation & Art:
As expected from Kyoto Animation, the animation is absolutely stunning. The environments and the backgrounds are rich with detail; the palace looked absolutely beautiful, and the landscape has always amazed me. And since it's a movie, the beauty of the characters has been amplified, which enhanced their emotional moments in the movie.

Music & Soundtrack:
The music is calm and atmospheric, enhancing the emotional resonance of the scenes. It greatly supports the somber tone of the movie, creating an immersive experience that tugs at the heartstrings.

Conclusion:
The movie is a heartwarming continuation of Violet's journey, offering a poignant exploration of personal growth, emotional expression, and the healing power of writing. The movie explores themes like the struggles of understanding one's feelings and the importance of communication in building meaningful connections. The beautiful animation, emotional depth, and rich storytelling make it a must-watch for everyone.

Mixed Feelings

I was hoping for some world class Yuri after feeling quite disappointed after the santa claus special, but it was just fine I guess.

Animation beautiful as always, though that's something to be expected when you're dealing with Violet. Sometimes it looks so beautiful I Feel like it's all just passing me by, so overwhelming.

The story was ok. I wasn't expecting the time with her little sister to be the bulk of it, I thought we'd be spending way more time at the school. The sister dynamic is interesting, and it went somehwere I wasn't really expecting; but it didn't blow me out of the ... water or anything. Lil sis's relationship with Benedict is cute though, and I liked it.

Movie was nothing special overall, but not insulting.

Doesn't Meet Violet Evergarden's Standards

As someone who watched and thoroughly enjoyed Season 1 of Violet Evergarden, this movie fell short of expectations. While Kyoani still delivers beautiful, top-tier animation, the film struggles with pacing and narrative engagement.

At 1.5 hours, the runtime feels unnecessarily long for the story it tries to tell. The slow pacing drags the experience, and unfortunately, Violet herself has very limited screen time—especially in the second half, which contributes to the lack of emotional depth and connection the series is known for.

SPOILERS BELOW

The characters, particularly Isabella, are written inconsistently. Her flashback self—mature and composed during wartime—doesn't align with how emotionally fragile and ... dependent she becomes after being separated from Taylor. This drastic shift breaks immersion and undermines her character development.

The ending is also unsatisfying. Taylor's decision not to reunite with Isabella feels contrived and out of character. She claims she wants to become a postman and deliver a letter herself, but given her earlier portrayal as naive and emotionally driven, it's hard to believe she'd willingly delay reuniting with someone she considers a sister. It feels like forced drama for the sake of plot.

In summary, this film lacks the emotional impact, character consistency, and narrative strength that made Violet Evergarden special. It’s beautifully animated, but ultimately disappointing from a storytelling perspective.
