A selection of 21st century anime series featuring characters who are adults. From ordinary office workers to traveling peddlers to superheroes, adult protagonists can have a variety of life experiences and many different ways of living. Young emerging adults may still be trying to find their path in life, while established older folks are more likely to have mastered the art of adulting - or at least learned enough to muddle by. Some adults become jaded over time from repeated exposure to the reality that life is often painful, depressing, and unfair. Others retain a more positive outlook by focusing on their dreams for the future or take a more pragmatic approach by putting all their efforts into improving their lives here and now.

Slice of life anime with a main focus on character development. All types of settings and moods. Sorted by rank.

To qualify for the list, the manga had to be at least 15 years old when the anime came out. Organized in ascending order by length of time between manga and anime. Each manga can only be accounted for once, so no remakes - those go on a separate list.

Best music-genre anime to hit the feels

These are all shows under the seinen demographic! There are various different genres like action, fantasy, mystery, thriller, romance so don’t be surprised when you find a show you thought could be a Shoujo, shounen, or Josei in here. These are all shows I found interesting and so I hope for find something you like in here! (Working on explanations!)

An anime about the everyday life of adults, from the first steps of young students to the serious work of mature men and women. There are no special rules, you can also find here some historical and moderately science fiction works, as long as they are devoted to the daily life of adults.

Do you create art, literature, music, food, or physical goods? You will probably relate to the people in these shows!

Everything in this stack has a plot or themes about creators and their relationships to the things they create. The creators don't always have to be the main character, but in most cases, they will be.

Not all entries from each franchise will be included, to give me more space to add different shows. The theme doesn't necessarily need to be about art, but that was where this interest stack was originally meant to go. (Some of these shows will be "sports" anime with the sports in question being particularly artsy.)

A small part of the romance animes that I have watched, some of them are movies and most of them are completely focused on romance.

Only the names (mostly the English ones) are great/unique anime can either be good or average

Anime that just leave you with that feeling of 'je ne sais quoi' ... that last touch of feeling as it floats away after the final closing episode could be bittersweet, poignant, heartwrenching, thrilling, close-to-home, among many other inexplicable emotions. We all have those that we can't explain why, but really hits the spot. A list for 'emotive genre' ... [I just coined that phrase??]

They are all very well written anime. The story is consistent and very realistic and have a conclusion. Interesting and not creepy characters. Very uncomfortable at times as they should be because the romance involves unconventional love.
