Gilgamesh

In an attempt to gather information on immortality, scientists from around the world have assembled to study "Heaven's Gate"—the tomb turned laboratory of the mythical king Gilgamesh. But soon enough, the research is deemed unethical and all planned work comes to a halt. However, a group of terrorists pay this no thought and storm into Heaven's Gate, ultimately causing an explosion that leads to the collapse of the advanced information civilization.

Many years after the incident, the siblings Tatsuya and Kiyoko Madoka are on the run from thugs. Yet this seems to be the least of their worries as they find themselves in the midst of a war between two powerful cryptic factions. With both groups claiming to fight for the betterment of society, Tatsuya and Kiyoko will have to find a way to decide who to trust.

I enjoy stuff like this. Most people do not and I get that. It's a low budget Evangelion / Ergo Proxy / Texhnolyze, maybe 50%/25%/25% split without Mecha's. It's dark, and gloomy. I honestly did not see a couple key parts about the end coming. You think it's obvious what kind of ending it will have from the beginning but still gives hope that it can be changed. Character development was so/so. I think it would have been better if home girl wasn't a trap and made an Adam with homie, could of had that Adam and Eve ending. "'2 Eves, 1 Tuning Fork" is ... the name of the sequel I think. It's not the best way I could have explained it but other people have already done a great job explaining it.

7/10 considering the budget

Mixed Feelings

I can't tell you whether I love this show or hate it. I can't tell you whether it's a brilliant burst of creativity that overcomes a miniscule budget with maniacal glee towards a story nobody else would touch without cleaning up the rough edges, or a cruel and nihilistic attempt at scoring points with the pretentious crowd, name-dropping titles like "The Sheltering Sky" along the way to let them know they're buds. Did I watch an anime that is a wild ride that shows what really happens when people play God, or pointless drivel that punches down on scientists who already have enough problems being ... demonized as it is ("Peer review" is definitely everyone gathering in a Dark City-esque room where they all discuss how they should best evolve into super beings. Nailed it)?

Has it been 20 years? Wow. When this came out, there was a segment of the communitiy that proposed this was some kind of deep, mystical masterpiece. Previously unmatched in anime history, and unlikely to ever be matched again.

No. Uh-uhn. The only thing more pretentious than the cultists, was the series itself.

The art work was at least different from anything before it. Although on a purely aestethic level, I didn't care for it. The animation has a moment in it, or two, that is above average. But not enough good segments to make a solid impression. The characters hardly seem likeable, and the ... writing whipsaws them back and forth, like they are victims rather than participants. The narrative is not impressive either. It tries to be this deep, esoteric experience, But it ends up just being a confusing, muddled mess. Think end of Evangelion confusing, muddled mess, only worse. In fact this ending might be an order of magnitude worse.

The VAs struck me as kind of sketchy. Sometimes they did OK, but in a lot of scenes I didn't get what they were trying to convey. Like they were stuck in the mud and purposely trying to be meh. The direction was very poor in that regard.

The producers are lucky the Annunaki did not decend from the skies, and bitchslap them for this mess. But I will give them props for at least trying. Back in the day, I'd have graded this about 72/100 for a C-. But I can't imagine time having been good to this. No better than 60/100 for a D- today. There's good reason this series is all but forgotten.
