Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi

In a world of magic and monsters, Krylancelo Finrandi and his foster sister Azalie Cait-Sith were once promising students of sorcery, prodigies at the famous Tower of Fangs. But an experiment gone horribly wrong warps Azalie's appearance, trapping her in the form of a dragon.

Elders at the Tower—more interested in preserving their reputation rather than their students' lives—drive off the transformed Azalie and cover up the incident. Outraged, Krylancelo strikes out on his own, taking the new name of "Orphen" and vowing to return Azalie to her normal state.

Five years later, Orphen's quest has stalled. A chance encounter brings him face to face with Azalie again, but he still has no way to restore her body. And with a hostile group of sorcerers hunting her down, he may be running out of time. The past and present collide as Orphen tries to find how to save Azalie from their former teachers and friends.

You might like this show if you're a similar anime fan as I am;
Watching Bleach, Naruto, DBZ, Gundam Seed etc. whatever was on the weekend channels wherever you grew up (as for me, YTV in Canada).

This is a good show. Good action sequences (not just brief flashes of MC in different positions to signify movement, but well-choreographed fight scenes). Good character development, and good side characters.

Orphen is the story of one of the strongest wizard apprentices in history abandoning his wizarding school when they basically label his best-friend-turned-monster as a target to be killed. So, he follows his values and leaves the organization. Basically, this ... season is about him trying to save the person in question, while exploring the world and meeting new people. It was super refreshing to find a new anime that was action-based where the MC wasn't a complete limp-**** simp, which so many people seem to love. He is strong right from the beginning but not too OP, and has good character.

They don't hold your hand with deaths or violence in this anime, not that it's over the top but it's still none of that "five inch laceration on your stomach that doesn't bleed and I'm fine in the next scene" nonsense.
I up-rated this a bit because it blew my mind to see a 5.80 rating when legit rape and pedophile animes have higher ratings on this site, god help the depraved virgins that watch and defend that garbage.

Good fights, decent story that tracks, and decent characters make for a solid 7/10 anime that brings any 25+ person back to their childhood with the anime vibes that this gives off, in a good way.

If I've learned anything from this site, it's not to ignore the low-rating animes. Remember the type of illegal shit that goes on in so many high-rated anime (ishizoku reviewers or whatever, come on that little angel child has vivid sex scenes with some pedophile excuse that 'hey it's anime I'm older than I look!) and never forget that those people have equal rating rights as you. If you see a premise you like and art style that looks decent, put 10 minutes into watching it and feeling out the waters instead of 20 minutes reading reviews written by people with different preferences.

Mixed Feelings

Sorcerous Stabber Orphen. If there was a title that is more forced, I haven't yet seen it. This is an interesting case for sure.
The series starts with three episodes that make you ask "should I continue watching?," then transforms into a great story, then the great story turns into a 1970s 1980s Hong Kong kung-fu film, then ends in the most ambigious manner.
The animation is godawful. I understand it is based on a 1998-1999 anime series and, I didn't check but probably an even earlier manga. The drawings cannot be found anywhere else in the 21st Century apart from Detective Conan, they are that ... bad. The music is completely out of tune, out of character, and meaningless. The characters are not well defined at all. So, a lad named Krylancero grows up in an orphanage with two girls and all three of them are transferred to a school for sorcery, and even though the boy is about up to 10 years younger than the girls, he is in the same class with them. Dramatic things happen, he leaves the school to find Azalie, one of the two girls he grew up with. In the five years that follow, he chooses the name Orphen as he is an "orphan", somehow becomes a loan shark who can not pay the rent for his boarding house room. He meets with two kids and two dwarves and a myriad other people and all the characters are made off of cardboard as they don't develop at all, or far worse, they do develop the moment development is required on the script. The affair with the girl Azalie is very complicated, even incomprehensible because the writer made a mess of the story's continuity. There is a church, an upper echelon of sorcerers whomever they are, a cult, rangers, royal family, and none of these lift a finger when people massacre others in the middle of the big city. Also, there is no background story that illuminates who and what these people and institutions are.
Still, have I managed to watch it from one end to the other; yes I did and I have a tendency to drop anime shows 10 minutes into them. Did I enjoy it; I surely liked more than half of the episodes. Would I recommend it? Only if you are bored, don't have anything else to read, watch, or listen to.
So, not the best show ever, but it is watchable.

Recommendation: Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi isn't the worst anime ever made, but it certainly feels that way while you're watching it. It is irredeemably awful, don't waste your time on this series. Contains some spoilers

Story: Orphen is, you guessed it, an orphan, originally named Krylancelo (the names in this series are absolutely ridiculous). He was taken in by a sorcerer's tower along with his two "sisters" (Azalie and Tish), and they all became powerful mages before Azalie accidentally turned herself into a dragon during a failed magical experiment and the tower attempted to cover it up and declare her dead. This ... leads to Krylancelo falling out with the tower, taking the name "Orphen" and going off on his own to find a way to turn Azalie back into a human. In fact, Orphen accomplishes this almost immediately, solving the central problem of the story in about 3 episodes. The rest of the story is both aimless and pointlessly convoluted, featuring Azalie's murderous body-swapping adventures, a pointless digression into unnecessary and idiotic lore about "Deep Dragons" that are not actually dragons and are more like really big wolves (the reason for them being called Dragons is never explained), and a coup plot involving characters we don't know or care about. The writing is consistently awful, the pacing is even worse, and I didn't even bother attempting to parse what was happening at a certain point because it was all so tiresome and bad that I just wanted it to be over. This is certainly not a good anime adaptation, but it's very apparent from watching it that the source material it's working from is at least as bad if not worse.

Audio/Visual: Very bad in both respects. The VA work is shoddy and the voices are often hilariously unfitting for their characters, especially Morikubo Shoutarou's work as Krylancelo/Orphen. The music in general is poor and the OP is ear-bleedingly awful. The animation is even worse than that though. It looks bad and low-budget most of the time, and they constantly fill time with unnecessary recaps and flashbacks just so they can reuse previously animated material to reduce the number of scenes they have to animate fresh, to the point that every single episode feels like a partial recap episode of the previous ones. The action and fighting scenes in particular are poorly animated and look like slideshows with bare minimum in-between animation. But all of that pales in comparison to the most unintentionally hilarious part of this series, Orphen's character design and outfit. The posters and still images don't really do justice how jarring it is to see this motherfucker dressed like every mall goth loser I went to high school with in 2004 while walking around in a fantasy world. This man is a sorcerer and he looks like he wants to tell me about how deep the lyrics to Avenged Sevenfold songs are at all times. Apparently someone, presumably the original writer or illustrator of the light novel, thought that this guy looked cool and he deeply, embarrassingly does not.

Characters: Not a single likable one in the bunch. Orphen's rotating cast of sidekicks features a pair of dwarves that are among the most annoying characters I've ever seen in fiction, a stereotypical dumb blonde bimbo with a Deep Dragon kitten that brazenly exists solely to fix predicaments that the writer got himself into, a "student" that is so unmemorable that I forgot he existed every time he wasn't on the screen, and the impenetrably bitchy Azalie, who is a bit like Rachel from Tower of God in that she is endlessly and predictably betraying the main character while he continues to simp for her after she's fucked him over or killed people he cares about a hundred million times. I almost liked Tish for a while, and then because this series is committed to snuffing out even the tiniest bit of good will you could be holding towards it, she goes running into a trap while narrating out loud the whole time that she knows it's a trap and a bad idea to go in alone, and ends up permanently disabled and spends the rest of the season in a hospital bed. It's almost impressive how they managed to write a full cast of the most thoroughly unlikable dipshits you'll ever see, without even accidentally creating a fun or interesting character in the process. There is nothing positive to say about anyone or anything in this series.
