Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu

When Subaru Natsuki leaves the convenience store, the last thing he expects is to be wrenched from his everyday life and dropped into a fantasy world. Things are not looking good for the bewildered teenager; however, not long after his arrival, he is attacked by some thugs. Armed with only a bag of groceries and a now useless cell phone, he is quickly beaten to a pulp. Fortunately, a mysterious beauty named Satella, in hot pursuit after the one who stole her insignia, happens upon Subaru and saves him. In order to thank the honest and kindhearted girl, Subaru offers to help in her search, and later that night, he even finds the whereabouts of that which she seeks. But unbeknownst to them, a much darker force stalks the pair from the shadows, and just minutes after locating the insignia, Subaru and Satella are brutally murdered.

However, Subaru immediately reawakens to a familiar scene—confronted by the same group of thugs, meeting Satella all over again—the enigma deepens as history inexplicably repeats itself.

Having the protagonist traumatized by the raw stress of what would realistically happen in an isekai scenario ist brilliant. Its not the most innovative idea but it is pulled of very carefully. The care that is put into that though clashes with the rarely funny jokes about isekai clishés. But I didn't notice many of these points in the first episodes because a smooth pacing and good mystery/character writing kept me from noticing. But when the writing slips at roughly the halve way point of the season you start to see these things. At this point Subaru and later other characters start a habit of ... being understandably shaken, traumatized or even broken by the events that this world throws at them but then being ashamed of feeling that way. In my opinion this males everything more realistic but there comes a point where it really starts getting on my nerves and I find myself skipping huge dialogue chunks because I can't bear listening to them glaring each other the same way for the 3rd time.

All told tho, I still highly value the genuine streak of faithful writing that permeates the whole thing.

Mixed Feelings

MC is a pathetic loser. At first, he had his optimistic attitude and that determination to help Emilia and others as a redeeming feature, but by the time you reach ep 13, he completely becomes wimpy and selfish and depressingly embarrassing. A torture to watch. People say he is realistic, but it isn't a realistic reaction to act shamelessly and barge in on a kingdom-level event held at the castle, much less disrupt it by suddenly announcing yourself a knight and insulting all those decision makers who could kill them, imprison them, or ruin their lives. Initially rated it 2 for ep 13-15, but the ... later episodes did return him to a slightly more likeable guy again, so i deleted my review and rated it at 5 instead.

My issue with Re Zero is that it's way too unrealistic.

The guy gets thrown into a dangerous world of constant death, and discovers that every time he dies, he leaps back in time. And the way he reacts... it's just surreal. Almost immediately, he starts adapting and trying to help his friends. He just catches onto things way too fast. How is he even supposed to be relatable?

I mean, sure, he screws up a lot at first, but the speed with which he starts catching on is nothing short of unbelievable. How did this guy even end up becoming a NEET in his ... previous life? Was he a NEET by choice? I can't imagine it being otherwise.

I have autism. World is complex to me, the constant deluge of information is just way too chaotic for me to keep up with. Life just doesn't come naturally to autists. I have strategies for dealing with this. I make lists. I wrap a blanket around me and put on lo-fi music. Sure, everybody has their chaotic moments where they take a break from things and dabble in their hobbies away from everyone else, but I'm trying to say that life just doesn't come as naturally to autists. It just does not.

This is why Re Zero is inaccessible to me. Had what happened to Subaru happened to me, I’d probably spend years in useless bouts of denial, and every time I returned by death, I would ask "Did I just die?"— and I wouldn't be able to believe that I just did, and I'd gaslight myself into thinking that I was just daydreaming. Because it wouldn't make sense to me. I'd be sure I was imagining things up. How does he get it after just a few times?

The characters? Okay, yeah. Emilia is...fine? Maybe? Like, she’s potato-adjacent, but at least she’s a nice potato. And Rem? Designed to appeal to otaku, for sure. Reinhard? He's cool.

Maybe this show's story doesn’t have the conceptual weight of Higurashi or the cleverness of Steins;Gate or the raw ambition of Full Metal Daemon Muramasa in deconstructing character ego or the fluidity of Summertime Render or the memorability of Mushoku Tensei. But there’s something kind of fascinating about it anyway. It's like what if universe was designed by a rationalist and we could keep retrying life or if life was a video game made by Fromsoft. It's something that makes me feel like maybe I’m the problem. Like, the reason I don’t love it isn’t that it’s bad, it's very good, but that I wouldn’t survive in its world.
