Life in the bustling city of Orario is never dull, especially for Bell Cranel, a naïve young man who hopes to become the greatest adventurer in the land. After a chance encounter with the lonely goddess, Hestia, his dreams become a little closer to reality. With her support, Bell embarks on a fantastic quest as he ventures deep within the city's monster-filled catacombs, known only as the "Dungeon." Death lurks around every corner in the cavernous depths of this terrifying labyrinth, and a mysterious power moves amidst the shadows.

Even on the surface, survival is a hard-earned privilege. Indeed, nothing is ever certain in a world where gods and humans live and work together, especially when they often struggle to get along. One thing is for sure, though: a myriad of blunders, triumphs and friendships awaits the dauntlessly optimistic protagonist of this herculean tale.

This is my review, I hope it helps those who are wondering whether to watch Danmachi or not.

Pros:

Mixed Feelings

When the 5 score in the review say it is average, that is exactly how this anime is. I try to write this without spoilers, or at least minimal ones.

Story and world: Gods living with mortals, where they cant use their godly powers, but they still have powers that could seriously destroy the world by some means (how? I dont know either). We have no clue as to what and how happened, other than the town the anime takes place in there is zero worldbuilding or anything resembling it, so dont expect something like that.
As another review said it, an 8 year old could write ... a story like this, I would like to add to that, with that an 8 year old probably wrote this story, because other than that explanation, I have no clue why would someone write this garbage.

Characters: Shitty stories and settings like this usually are saved by the characters, but not here.
All characters are painfully 1 dimensional, they have one personality trait and thats it, including our mc, he is just there, to be there. He is the generic good guy mc, whoch wouldnt be bad, if he had an at least okay motivation, but his only motivation is that he fell in love with a strong women, someone said to him that women like strong men who protect them, and now he wants to be strong to confess to his crush so he can protect her. Noice.
The side characters are just as bleak, they either rely on the story to have some personality (like most of the gods in this god forsaken world they wrote) or they have one trait (which is usually liking the mc) and they operate with that. Noice again. Zero character progressiom, minimal and stupidly or at least lazily written backstories with no explanation and usually no ties to the actual story (to be fair there is no story to begin with, so you cant tie nothing to nothing).

Animation/art: I enjoyed the art, even tough it was nothing spectacular (it was average), at the beginning it fit the show well, but somewhere trough they started using cheap cgi for the monsters and it really took away anything they had going on in this field.

Music: Painfully average, nothing bad, but nothing good or unique either

All in all this anime is just flat out average in every department, or even just bad, it still had some moments, and the very few moments of chemistry between the fmc and mc were at least cute and had a semblance of good romance, but nothing extraordinary.
Someone said this anime is a hidden gem (thats why I started watching it) and I have to say, they were 50% right.
This anime is hidden, but nowhere near a gem. Luckily it was hidden.
Also, while there are other seasons and side stories out there (because why not make an 8 year old's literary homework as complicated of a cash grab as you can) the first season's ending is a harder cliffhanger than the Stallone movie from the 90's. This is blatant cash grab and advertisement for the source material (with a story, setting and characters this bad I could not imagine the source material being better, but this is just my opinion, I never read it, so dont take me up on that and see for yourself).

So in my opiniom, if you like BDSM, you are a diagnosed psychopatch, you have some mental illnesses on the more serious side or you just have the ability to not think (like literally not think) then you will probably enjoy this anime. If you dont have at least 2 of the above requirements then you will just waste your time on this pile of nothing.

Dungeon anime is about a swordsman boy who needs to go to the video game tower dungeon to level up so he can protect his nakama, save the girl, and build his harem.

The boy is a nice guy dumdum who’s totally innocent and heroic but it’s not base audience gratification if he’s weak some of the time. His effete regular voice and grating screams and yelling are brought to you by the overcast Matsuoka Yoshitsugu, doing the exact same performance done as the leads in the previous Sword Art Online, and later on Eromanga Sensei, not to mention countless other roles in shounen action ... and narou-kei de jour. I mention this because this anime is inferior to SAO by order of magnitude, Kirito was interested in virtual reality and AI, not just slaying the dungeon beast and making the girls swoon. So why is this popular then? A few reasons. 1) This anime is from 2015, before fantasy light novel junk food went completely out of control in terms of adaptation quantity. That makes Dungeon Blablablah early to the party, and thereby more notable. 2) The character designs are not generic or forgettable unlike later light novel potato chips. They were originally done by the Durarara guy who has actual style and in official art they look attractive in a sense, in the anime the art quality is too low for them to look good. 3) And here it is, the big one(s), it has large breasts dressed up in boob string fetish outfit. I perhaps find this one of the most tacky and pathetic things in popular anime. But, if all you care about is fanservice, I would at least suggest an anime with cuter girls.

As of writing, this anime is ten years old and has an umpteenth sequel season currently airing. Perhaps ‘Is it Wrong to Dungeon Ad Infinitum?’ serves as good reference point for cultural and creative anime stagnation between 2015 and 2025.
