School Days

High school student Makoto Itou first notices Kotonoha Katsura at the start of his second semester, freshman year. Immediately, he becomes entranced by her beauty, but his bashfulness doesn't allow him to approach her, even though they ride the same train every day. Instead, he snaps a photo of her in secret and sets it as his cell phone's wallpaper: a charm that, if kept under wraps, would supposedly help you realize your love. However, classmate Sekai Saionji spots the picture, but instead of ratting him out, she offers to help set him up with Kotonoha—going so far as befriending her just for him. Thus, the trio begins a rather impromptu friendship.

School Days follows the lives of these three teenagers as they traverse the joys and hardships that come with being a high schooler. In a story alive and brimming with romance and melancholy, the tale of these three students will linger in memory long after the momentous conclusion.

Not as advertised. That is the only line sentence that should be paired with this show. It's very fair to assume based off the title and it's genre that it would play out like a harem/slice of life kind of show. I mean, it's literally called "School Days". You couldn't dare guess that the story would end up like how it was. For me, that's how it got bumped up from my original rating of 5. It's not what you expect. I liked that. It seemed nice and normal at the start with nothing really standing out, aside from the fact that the protagonist was ... actually considered good looking. That however was one of the only really interesting aspect of any character in the show. Which brings me to it's problems.

The characters are shallow, aside from Sekai who had something going but not enough to the point where she becomes complex and where you want to like her. That's one of the show's problems. A lot of the characters are uninteresting and you can't make a connection with them. For example, Setsuna was just like any other loli and Kotonoha was straight up simple. The main, Makoto was just a scumbag who just thinks with his dick, and as a guy, I'd love to sock him in his mouth. And since the characters are so simple, with nothing to like, you start hating them and the story also makes you hate them since they all become scum in the end. But as for Makoto, while he's perfect for what the plot was trying to do, he was also just as simple as the rest of the characters and easy to read. Again it doesn't help that he's a scumbag.

Another problem the show had was it's plot and ending. The plot wants to explore dark ideas like the potential toxicity that comes when engaging in romantic relationships. And it did that, albeit in an extreme way (that probably wouldn't slide in today's media) but the show went too far. And for some reason adults don't exist. Everyone lives alone and they even got a room in the school festival that allowed students to fuck. That wasn't a good representation of the themes.

And lastly, the ending. It was extreme. Not that I liked that, but I did give it a few more points because of the ending. It was satisfying for me because Makoto got what was coming for him. But, it was too extreme. It didn't need to go that far because not even the characters went that far (in terms of character depth). The show was trying too hard to give a shocking ending, and it flopped bad.

Overall, It's a 7 for me because it's unique, not good, not even decent, but unique and not as advertised.

Mixed Feelings

Upon going through my extensive backlog of shows I eventually want to watch, School Days finally arrived on my monitor, and oh boy did it live up to its reputation.

As much as I hate to say it, the first half of this show was actually kind of fun. Now, I’m not about to say that the characters are amazing, or that the writing is out of this world (I find that most of it is kinda shit actually), but goddamn this show somehow managed to really keep me intrigued. There’s just something about these stupid kids, repeatedly ruining their stupid relationships, while also doing ... other increasingly stupid things that’s more entertaining than I care to admit.

I really couldn’t tell you how the show so effectively invested me, in any other situation I would’ve absolutely hated its guts. Maybe it’s just my monkey brain feeling sad for the shy and cute love interest whenever her war criminal of a boyfriend does anything inappropriate.

Now, of course, this innocent fun doesn’t last for long, as somewhere along the line, the show completely jumps the gun and turns into a harem-fest devoid of anything that I might’ve enjoyed before. I have nothing against a fictional title portraying teenagers exploring their sexuality for the first time, but like, this is officially too much. By the time the notorious ending (which I miraculously hadn’t spoiled for myself until now) came around, nothing really mattered anymore, the show went insane long before the climax.

But it really has many of the individual pieces that you would find in an acceptable show, hadn’t it been too caught up in being the kind of story that it is. Staying on the path it laid for itself in the first half could’ve made for a potentially fine story, but it’s so adamant on having a shocking ending and delivering more than it initially promises that it entirely fumbles and turns into the meme that it is today… for better or for worse.

In short, there are much worse shows out there that don't bring anything to the table, and I’d much rather have something like this, that actually makes me feel something.

5.0, definitely delivers, just in all the wrong senses of the word.

For me, this anime is simply the definition of guilty pleasure and I will not recommend it because objectively it is shit.

This anime seemed ultra exaggerated most of the time but at the same time quite realistic in its whole toxicity festival, but in the end it turned out to be just edgy shit, for the sake of being edgy shit xD

Despite everything it was quite interesting from a certain point, mainly because it was simply pleasant to be irritated by the stupidity of the characters who, as I said, are quite realistic, in the sense that it is easy to imagine that teenagers can ... behave in such an irrational way, but despite everything (not even counting the finale) I couldn't take these exaggerated idiocies seriously, it's just that every character in this anime was written to be the worst or most disturbed person in the world and none of them (apart from Katsura up to a certain point) could be rooted for, was it really impossible to make one normal character who would think logically and be a counterbalance to all this irrational shit?

The funniest thing about this anime is the fact that the MC, who is just an "ordinary guy" and is distinguished only by extreme idiocy and thinking with a penis, is some kind of magnet for girls who are obsessively in love with him for no reason at all, it's so stupid and unbelievable, he doesn't even try, he doesn't manipulate or anything, he just is and all the girls fall for him and literally kill for him, which makes it all seem like some loser's fantasy, although looking at the ending, I'm not sure if anyone could fantasize about something like that.

Katsura seemed like the best character and you could even root for her, understand why she wants to be with this idiot but from a certain point she just became a typical boring yandere, did some guy piss me off? oh well, I have to see the MC xD Katsura's whole storyline was ultimately ultra shallow and forced edgy, which made it simply boring and imo it had the potential to be something better.
In general, all the female characters in this anime really only serve as MC's sex doll and they don't really exist outside of the MC so well... people who claim that the characters in this anime are somehow particularly complex (I've seen people like that) are funny xD

Besides, I find it funny that adults don't exist in this anime and such stupid things as a school festival where students have a special room to "fuck" can exist xD

Imo 5/10 because at least it stands out from all the school romances I've watched so far.
